i've seen a pair go for over 2k with a white sole (but a shit ton of wear down on the heel) on ebay. I got 500 for my really beat ugly pair. So high 1000s is average when dealing with them in decent condition. Also the milk/black ones tend to be the most expensive ones.

I wouldn't say Rick's retarded because A) his designs are (in my view, at least) actually aesthetically pleasing and B) after all, he's making a fuccton off all these fuccbois here. But it seems really foolish to pay that much for a pair of shoes. But I've already heard the argument:

Designer shoes = designer prices = mark ups out the ass = exclusivity.

Are you fucking stupid or just fucking stupid? Obcourse it's retarded to pay this much, but we don't get to set the prices for these toys we want to play dress up with you nincompoop.

I don't see people bitching about 200 to 300 dollar cell phones that are deemed absolute in function within the next year. I don't see car owners bitching about their gas guslers that take their hard earned dollars like a vending machine and I sure as fuck don't hear people bitching about more well thought out, designed and executed clothing when it comes to the higher end of retail, so please quit bitching about being poor even if you're not. I'm sure that there's some truth to what you say but let's think about what a successful product is.

I imagine that you mean that it is a product that a lot of people buy; it is *commercially* successful. A lot of people buy it at a certain price. And if people buy it, of course they were *willing* to buy it. They were willing to buy it at a certain price. So if a lot of people are willing to buy some design at a certain price, then you can sell the design at that price.

But the *price* of some design is not the same as its "worth". Money is an imperfect system for capturing true value. Money cannot truly capture the amounts of thought, skill, work, simplicity, complexity, utility, or beauty that go into a design. It is an intermediary currency.

So of course it's true that if I can convince a large number of people that the price for my item is fair, i.e. marketing, they will pay for it. But it doesn't seem that the reverse is true, that their paying for it is what my product is actually worth.

yeah but worth is not defined just by materials, labor, etc. Its not something that can be quantified because what something is "worth" varies from person to person. >Worth is more than material, labor, etc. It can be in exclusivity/rarity/age.
Maybe. Exclusivity and rarity are weaker points, IMO, because they are extrinsic features. We need to look outside of the object to determine them. For example: your movie poster. If there are no others left, then it's exclusive/rare. But to determine worth, we typically look at the features that *inhere* within the object: intrinsic features.

Looking at *extrinsic* features would be like saying that one apple is better than the other *because* it is bigger. Sure, often it's true that a bigger apple is better. But it's not true *because* one apple is bigger than the other, it's true *because* it's more filling: you will be less hungry once you've eaten the bigger one as compared to having eaten the smaller. It has more utility.

Let's grant your example. Sheet of paper A is $1000 and sheet of paper B is $00.01. Aside from being two different pieces of paper, they share all the same qualities: you can do the same exact things with them. They have all the same characteristics without being the same exact sheet of paper; they are unique yet extremely similar.

Yes, relevant differences. But in both the sheets of paper example and this geobasket thread, there seem to be negligible differences. Yeah but the only reason the fake ones exist is because the real design was successful. For all intents and purposes, its a unique design. Just because another factory in china makes copies of it doesnt change the fact that the original was a unique product with a specific value.

Sorry, just read your other comments. Is there any real moral justification for spending tonnes of money on anything, when it could have been spent in attempting to better individuals less well off than I?

While helping people at an individual level is extremely respectable and selfless, it's often futile and doesn't address the larger overarching problem (e.g. poverty). It's not to be expected that humans will suddenly have the moment of blinding realization that leads them to suddenly channel their collective wealth towards the betterment of the entire species, either.

What most people don't realize, however, is that, contrary to popular instilled belief, not only are the ones that completely change the systems surrounding the problem generally more well known, they are more helpful in the 'big picture'. We can see this most evidently in the sciences. In contrast, if we look at the world of economics and business, we merely see a select few individuals of higher status and wealth putting their money towards sectors that aren't as fortunate, through charity. Of course, there are many volunteers and such that do a similar thing on a more personal and individual level. But I know only quite few that have attempted to provide changes to the societal system that allows people to make decisions that are entirely selfish and at the same time counter productive to the welfare of humans as a species.

Affecting individuals is a very difficult and personally rewarding task, but it's a mere drop in the ever flowing river. Altering the river's flow is, of course, much more demanding. Ultimately, though, it is the most effective way of commanding a large group towards the 'greater good'.

I agree with this post

I would never really want to live a normal life and go to "charity galas" or something to fill my charity quota or some shit

But then if you think about it that way any resource you have should be dedicated to w/e ur doing so the 1k would be better spent on something else unless you had enough wealth that the effect of whatever luxury you buy would increase ur efficiency of goal-achievement. Ex nicer paper, a secretary, a housemaid, personal gym, etc.

just my 2c

I think that at the same time, you have to realize that most do not have the means to even attempt to dent the problems humanity faces. The vast majority of humanity is at the whim of the hyperwealthy class of individuals. So how do you change the group mentality of these people if you aren't on their level? But perhaps, if the ordinary majority previously mentioned put even a small percentage of what they earn each year towards the problems afflicting us, even then change could be brought about.

So maybe it's not just about change at the higher level, but change at the lower ones as well.
