"The effects of facial hair manipulation on female perceptions of attractiveness, masculinity, and dominance in male faces" Nick Neave, Kerry Shields.

"Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of systematic alterations in male facial hair on female perceptions. A within-subjects design employed one condition (facial hair) incorporating five levels (clean-shaven, light stubble, heavy stubble, light beard and full beard). All levels were applied to three different facial designs, constructed using FACES software. The resulting 15 male faces were rated by 60 females on various attributes. Male faces displaying a full beard were considered the most masculine, aggressive, socially mature, and older. Males with a light beard were considered the most dominant. Males with light stubble were considered to be the most attractive, light stubble was also preferred for both short- and long-term relationships. These findings are discussed in terms of age preferences and good-genes models."

It's actually because models have excellent skin. Excellent skin is a lot more common in men who cannot grow any facial hair, this correlates with much smaller pores, and much less dark pores due to weak sebum production because there is no hair to nurture.
This isn't even broscience.

Attractiveness is quantifiable. It's a statistical value based on biological criteria that have existed for thousands of years. It's not easily quantifiable, but you can get a good approximation of the truth if not 100% of the truth. It's just an animal behavior.

If you have a sample of 1,000 women out of which 900 say facial hair is attractive, there may be a correlation which should be investigated further.

>>6122407
So induction is unscientific, Mr. Popper? I can see where you're coming from, but I disagree that a matter of probability and statistics doesn't count as knowledge, when common reality points to the existence of trends that define "attractiveness" and are supported by empirical data that very strongly suggest correlations.

I feel bad for your fiance. Congrats anyway.

because I think you're ernest in your response I'll try reply sincerely.

Attractiveness is not quantifable on the basis that traits which may have existed for thousands of years in one region have not had the same impression in another.

On that basis it is difficult to quantify universally attractive traits simply due to this inherent variability.

Even if you were to collect 100s of years of data from many selected populations I'm sure the only similarity would be that they have healthy functional organs.

Read timber's posts, she makes a good point.

Although humans are animals our social mannerisms are so intricate no simple algorithm or bar graph can analyse and simulate the activity and response as something as complex as the human mind.

Induction is not unscientific rather in a biological sense it's a cool way to go forward but it doesn't really mean shit. (ref example of junk DNA, maybe even consider astrocytes and glia and those developments).

I think it's hard to argue what is considered knowledge and what isn't but I can definitely argue credibility. I don't thin something is credible in biology if it is a poorly researched induction.

I think you also have to consider the sources of this 'data' and what makes it strong.

>Refer to timbers and her anglocentric argument.

It's an interesting issue but I don't think this will lead anywhere.

>Attractiveness is not quantifable on the basis that traits which may have existed for thousands of years in one region have not had the same impression in another. On that basis it is difficult to quantify universally attractive traits simply due to this inherent variability

The majority of our evolution took place in Africa and the highest variation exists within Africa. Outside, it's really not that great. Individuals have their super special preferences and fetishes, but whole populations tend to agree on what's attractive across a gradient (which used to follow a migration pattern). It doesn't matter what specific features you may prefer in a partner. The overall picture of attractiveness is consistent as fuck.

>young
>clear eyes
>defined jaw (how can you define your jaw even more? beard)
>muscular
>clear skin
>healthy head of hair
>symmetry
>breasts
>ass

All of them are markers of potential reproductive value. That doesn't ever change. No significant portion of any population prefers asymmetrical, wrinkly, old fucks or even anyone that deviates from the norm.

>Although humans are animals our social mannerisms are so intricate no simple algorithm or bar graph can analyse and simulate the activity and response as something as complex as the human mind.

No, our behavior is not that hard to interpret. Everything comes down to sex and social standing. I may have more complex thoughts than my cat, but our reasons for doing the things we do is the same.

Behavior research has been going on for a long ass time. Sexual psychology, evolution and statistical analyses have been coming together to get a pretty good picture of what "attractiveness" actually is. If we define credibility as a conclusion that withstands numerous trials and attempts to disprove it, many of the hypotheses do.

But whatever. This shit's getting too philosophical.

maybe the greatest physical variation but artistically and intellectually?

Different regions of the world are credited to different leaps of thinking.

I don't think we should be talking about physical evolution in nomadic african tribes millions of years ago if we're talking about attractivity and its perception today.

Yes it has contributed. But is it a significant contribution to discuss in the realms of modern day lust? No.

Young is a sign of health, people are inclined to be attracted to it but there also many socities where elders are lusted after too...Many nomadic tribes in africa are a example of this.

clear eyes. No, you only perceive it as attractive because of your experiences.
Show it to a secluded community and they'll spit and laugh at you.

Defined jaw. No.

Okay this is stupid. These are not universal attractiveness you dense fuck. Go read Timber's argument in this thread and realise what it means to only perceive things from a anglocentric perspective. Unless someone told you it's cool to have a defined jaw you wouldn't care otherwise. You're simply a product of your environment. Does that mean your truth is the absolute truth? No. Does it matter? No.

Yes behaviour is hard to interpret that's why fucking 99% of the activity of the brain remains a mystery.

No your reasons are not the same as your cat. Your hat has not been exposed to centuries of convoluted ass western mannerisms. If your cat wants to take a shit it will take a shit and licks its ass after.
If youw ant tot ake a shit you'll squeeze your anal sphincters as you pull your legs together and waddle towards the bathroom making sure no fecal matter drips down your leg and onto your dirt infested carpet, unbuckle undo the mechanisms holding your pants up, take your fedoa off, remove your jacket and then place your ass on a bowel which costs more than what you eat out of

You're very ideological.

>Young is a sign of health, people are inclined to be attracted to it but there also many socities where elders are lusted after too

Elders have power. Power is masculine. Masculinity is achieved through enough androgen output. Androgens cause facial hair, greater muscle mass, lower voices and greater height. Never in any society in all of our evolutionary history have any of those traits been statistically unfavored. It makes no sense to prefer anything else as those are the only reliable indicators of reproductive health.

>clear eyes. No, you only perceive it as attractive because of your experiences. Show it to a secluded community and they'll spit and laugh at you.

Yes, I can totally see cataracts as being attractive.

>check out dat du wit dem cloudy eyes
>omgah did u see him stumble into dat pole?
>have my babies u sickly dude

>Defined jaw. No.

Please explain why. It's a sign that androgenic hormones are functioning in a male and that equals reproductive health.

>anglocentric perspective

Not relevant. I'm talking humans as a species. I don't care about outliers. I don't care about complex interactions on a small scale in this argument. The overall picture is all that matters.

>>6129061
They're not statistically significant. You're talking about this from too personal a perspective which has its merits, but ON AVERAGE across the ENTIRETY of Homo sapiens, there are common traits that are signposts of sexual health and fitness.

Your argument has little basis beyond anecdotal evidence and personal discourse between a very limited number of people. Consider browsing actual studies from time to time or maybe take a few classes on evolution, psychology and statistics.

I'm aware of the wide range of preferences and how diverse humans can be, but I disagree strongly that there isn't a basic groundwork of preferences within a species. We aren't special snowflakes that are separated from basic biological principles.

Your argument was that "attractiveness" can't be quantified because some dude likes wrinkly tits and no asses in [non-anglo country]. My argument maintains that it can, because most men prefer functional tits and large hips. I can't believe you're disagreeing with this. It's basic fucking biology.

I'm not an objective person. I'm subjective and filled with all the sugary sweet loveliness of the world. I keep pets that are biological automatons and anthropomorphize the shit out of them. I'm in an interracial relationship and have my own weird set of preferences.

Fuck your assumptions about me and how I'll raise my children. Even if I'm aware of the proposed reasons behind why we do things, I don't act that way.

So there is no reliable empirical data for your shit?

Cool, thanks.

Christ, do you see the little numbers superscripted at the end of sentences? Click them. They often lead to "scientific studies."

Here, empirical data galore (protip: a higher number of citations means that a paper is usually pretty good):

You're worse than a creationist. Aren't you studying science? What are you going to do when you need to reduce variables but have an urge to introduce a shitload to keep it from dealing in absolutes?

Your claims to average don't mean anything.

Thank you.

No study ever done in any field has had an all-encompassing sample group. Past a certain point, increasing the sample size becomes insignificant.

You have no idea what research actually is and what inferences mean in its context. Good luck. You seemed alright in another thread, but now... goddamn, man. Dissonant as fuck.

your mindset makes me sad.

you just read through all my points and didn't heed anything and continued pushing your regime.

somehow you had the audacity to think that your opinion was absolute and that there is no space for variables.

you are the kind of scientist that produce errors and deem intricate processes as 'insignificant outliers'.

Right. It would be stupid to say that most humans have two arms, because we haven't tested most humans, right? Besides, I know a guy with one arm! You can say that the average human has two arms all you like, but it don't mean nothing unless you test errybody!

That's not enough for an average, you silly goose. That particular embryo has limb buds, sure, but how can you tell that it's "normal"? Show me a study that has checked at least half of all embryos born in the past 20 years!

(This is satire, by the way. I am exaggerating your ridiculous misunderstanding of how facts are arrived at. I'm expecting a comedy award any moment.)

the thing is studies identifying limb bud growth of embryos is well understood and pretty well studied and has concrete biological theory and not skewed w/ experience and perspective

while your attractiveness shit however is based in pseudoscience, cat litter and my tangled pubes.

There are most certainly physical traits that transcend culture adjustments when it comes to attractiveness. I am in no way claiming that the people arguing against quantifiable attractiveness are ugly themselves but, it's very easy to gain the perspective that beauty can be calculated when you've walked through life with the features that others desire.

Your eyes are too far apart. Nose is definitely crooked. The shape of your face is not aesthetically pleasing at all. You look like a 3/10 with make up in this photo. I don't even want to imagine what you look like without make up. I actually just threw up in my mouth, just thinking about it. Your head is too big (although that may be, because of your giraffe neck posture) . As for your hair, lol. Seriously, do something. You look like a horse. Stare at your face for more than 5 seconds, and you will see how ugly you are. The eyes which are too far apart is what ruins /damages an already ugly face even further. Unfortunately for you, that can't be surgically fixed, lol. You arms are way too long. lol at how they hang by your sides. Kind of reminds me of lurch. Don't even let me start on your pale complexion. It only works if you look hot. Unfortunately, you do not look hot. Its hard to sum up a creature like you in one word. 'UGLY ' would be unfair , since it doesn't reflect how repulsive you look. GROTESQUE is stretching it. But somewhere in between, is where you would be, on the scale of an average man. I'm sorry if my words seem a little harsh. Just so you know, I sugar coated this post as much as possible.

don't listen too much to the people saying negative things about you with facial hair. if you really want to give it a shot, you need to give your growth about 2-3 months to fill in all the patchy areas. if you like the way you look with facial hair then that is what mostly matters.

>shave daily
Doing it wrong.

That's what my dad taught me. Dad says alot of things. I've since learned I make everyone happy by shaving every 4-5 days, trimming around 5th day and onwards for as long as I want, then shaving whenever I do some routine to clean my face/skin and use the bathroom for awhile.
