6110626 No.6110626 [Reply] [Original]

I finally got a gf, but now I need a suit.
I don't want to get some crappy generic men's warehouse suit or tux, where should I look?
I live in Asheville, NC, and it has a lot of places to buy suits, but nowhere to rent them.
I've mastered raw denim, but I know very little about formal wear.
I know I want something slim, but I don't know how a suit should fit. For example how much of my pants should lay over my dress shoes?
Things like that.

Right.
Everyone here is going to Men's Warehouse, Mitchell's, or something like that to get a tux or suit.
I want something that will look a bit unique, but not neon white suit.
I'm thinking all black would probably be best, since my date is also going in all black. She's going to have magenta in there somehow, if it's a corsage or some sort of additional styling I don't know, but I'd like to incorporate dark magenta as well.
I'm thinking my bowtie and suspenders would be magenta. I'd like to avoid the "shiny plastic box" look a lot of guys get at prom.
>>6110671
The sticky is shit, we all know it, there's nothing that no one shouldn't know about a suit that isn't in there. I already know to check shoulders, a proper amount of cuff to show, proper tie length, etc so I'm wondering if there's anything you guys have to offer.
>>6110679
Don't have a camera but I got a pair of two year old WGs that I think have faded pretty good. I'm giving my E2s a break because it's hot. I meant I had knowledge about raw denim, not that I have a ton. I'm saving for some of NF's new ones though.
>>6110698
Yeah I didn't, this is for prom, and yeah I posted it cause he looks like case.

still dont wear a suit

the second time i went to prom me and a friend wore black skinny jeans toms a white vneck(he went with a green one though) and a black blazer

straight up i was stylin on all those nerds in ill fitting suits

>I'm thinking my bowtie and suspenders would be magenta

Absolutely not.

You can go with a magenta cummerbund or pochette (though I wouldn't recommend the latter at all)), but the bow tie remains black and your braces white or black

>The sticky is shit

So first you ask how a suit should fit and then tell us you already know?

>> No.6110781

>>6110758
Yeah I was rethinking that and I want to keep it as conservative/classic as posisble, I don't want to get shiny.
I mean shit in regard to what I'm looking for, it just talks about shoulder tightness and color schemes, but I've already decided on black and white and some dark maroon.
I don't know what KIND of suit I'm looking for. In some part I'd like to have suspenders on because I'm going to take off my jacket eventually, and I'd like to avoid a vest (maybe because I've been overexposed to shiny plastic vests?).
I guess I'm saying the sticky, for my purposes, is not satisfactory.
>>6110755
I'd like to try and be one of the people attending to try and keep it formal before people start showing up in cargo shorts and Old Navy flip flops.

>I don't know what KIND of suit I'm looking for
you do realize that you can go to any decent suit store and tell someone there that you want to keep it as conservative as possible and they'll rec you a suit, right?

I saw that, and though the principles are right, I personally don't like the look of that.

On a more serious note I don't think I can afford that. If I'm going to purchase a suit/tux it would need to be under $700, optimally under $500, so I can't get anything too up there.
I also doubt a rental would have what I'm looking for.
Are there any places that I should look out for?
>>6110815
I have no real idea either. I definitely don't want to show up in jeans and a blazer, so I want something formal.
And with a tux I doubt I'm going to find a great one that fits in my price range, but I really don't know.
Most people will be going in a coat/vest/dress shirt/dress shoes if that's anything.
All I know is that I want the majority of my outfit to be black and white primarily, and slim fit.

No I'm saying that I expect that to be the case in around 5 or 6 years because what started out as being strictly formal got more lax and lax to the point people are gonna show up in blazers and jeans, which to me is business casual, not formal.
>>6110842
I was joking, I don't think I can afford browne.

Oh. Allow me to enlighten you then:

Prom calls for a dress code called black tie which is essentially the fancy name for what most people call tuxedo in America.

A tuxedo is a black jacket with satin-faced lapels and buttons. If the jacket is single-breasted it should have a single button and a shawl (round, no notch) collar.
(double-breasted jackets are also acceptable, again the detailing is very specific but I don't recommend looking into that right now. Go with single-breasted). The American tuxedo can be midnight blue. This is not acceptable in Europe.

The trousers are typical dress pants apart from the fact that they have satin-lines going down the sides. Belts are absolutely not allowed. If they aren't tailored to fit you should use braces/suspenders

Shirt is white. The buttons can be fly-fronted (I personally like that. It's not very traditional but is very much in-spirit with the minimalism of the dress). Normal or winged collar are acceptable. French cuffs.

You wear a silk cummerbund to smoothen the transition from your pants to your shirt. This is the best place to add some colour to your fit as long as you keep it subtle.

Black bow tie around your neck. Self-made.

Shoes should be oxfords. Black leather or patent leather. I prefer ordinary leather as the extreme shine can get a bit in your face

haha nah my fit was actually pretty good but looking back i was prolly a little underdressed ;)

>>6110844
>what started out as being strictly formal got more lax
relax man it's prom, you're supposed to have fun not worry about how everyone's dressed

also
>under $700, optimally under $500
just get one from topman or something then and if it fits bad take it to a tailor

I just realised how autistically this came across. Just telling you how to wear a tux "properly" if that's what you want.

Thanks.
Man I really don't know what I should go for.
I hate how thin a lot of dress pants feel, and how hard it is to get something slim.
Can we get a black and white suit dump rolling if possible?
I feel like I want a suit, but still am at a loss at what exactly I should be getting.

I think what you're looking for is a slim-fitting midnight blue suit, as I wouldn't recommend an all-black suit for anything but a funeral.
