I wouldn't take it as a complement. Gays look for certain features in your dress and body language. It doesn't mean you're attractive generally, it means that you seem to be gay. If you looked and acted like a proper straight person gay men wouldn't hit on you (they'd just mire from a distance and not make a pass at you).

I think you'd be surprised how many gay dudes are attracted to regular good looking men and are really ambivalent about hitting on them because they can't know for sure that the other person is gay. Sometimes they take the chance because finding gay guys that aren't broadcasting their sexuality everywhere (which they're usually not into anyway) actually takes some work.

It can just mean they think you're attractive is my point, and if you think there's a "proper straight person" way to act and dress that doesn't involve sex with women that marks you as straight beyond any reasonable doubt you're deluding yourself.

Yes, all the time. When they're my father's age I politely accept the free drinks that they feel obligated to buy me, when they're fat I say thank you and walk away, if they're swishy, sprankling and hey-gurl-hey-ing I turn and leave, if they're "straight acting" and wearing a t-shirt that's obviously too small for them I'll laugh and thank them, if they could pass off as a straight guy but are consequently as deep as a kiddy pool I'll kiss them for a while and leave them hanging eventually, if they're some fashion forward try hard I'll assume they think they're better than the world and kiss them, too; but I'd never do anything else, there's plenty of other gay stereotypes that hit on me, but I kind of just hate everyone who goes to a gaybar. On a side-note, whenever a friend convinces me to dress up as a girl I get hit on by straight men a lot, too. I'm not sure if I should take that as a compliment or not.
