Hi, /fa/.

I will act on a play where my character is from 1830 and 19 years old, I need ideas for the costume.
I thought of wearing a waistcoat and bowtie, but since my character is young, I don't wanna look too formal, neither end up looking like a restaurant waiter.

Can you help me, please? Pic related.

1830s fashion is a lot different then late 1800s. Just getting a suit won't cut it.

It's a play from my acting school, the place can't provide the outfits, don't ask me why.

Seems like a waistcoat and a cravat or something might be the thing to unlocking informal 1830s without going waitercore.

Wikipedia:
"In the 1830s, men wore dark coats, light trousers, and dark cravats for daywear. "
"1830s fashion in European and European-influenced clothing is characterized by an emphasis on breadth, initially at the shoulder and later in the hips, in contrast to the narrower silhouettes that had predominated between 1800-1820."

Which is great by the way, because darker trousers are usually more waitercore.

OP here, thanks for the ideais, anons, keep 'em coming.
Perhaps dropping the coat and wearing just the waistcoat and cravat would look more youthful, what do you think? And wearing a gray waistcoat seems less waiter like, even if not exactly faithful to the 1830's fashion.

The thing is, fashion then didn't distinguish that much between ages. Kids were just seen as small-adults and the phenomenon of the teenager/adolescent wasn't even invented if I recall correctly.

If the climate and context of the play allow it you might want to drop the coat. Dark gray or some brownish (maybe even blue or green) hue for the waistcoat might indeed be better but I'm sure the cravat would offset the waiter-thing a bit.
Folding the shirtsleeve a bit messily might help to get it a bit more informal, but I'm afraid it might be too informal or not that correct for the period.

Pic unrelated, its Napoleon in his wintergear, which I find hilarious.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it was considered rather improper to be seen in public without a jacket until into the 20th century.
If the character's the type to follow social rules, he should wear a jacket.
Rather than age, what someone in the 1830's wore would depend more on their profession and socioeconomic class.

Dude, lrn2real life. A lot of plays in established theaters have no costume budgets either.
