I think it's another reason why one should understand these symbols before emblazoning them on one's body.
Take a gander at the Thai Yantra tradition - the monks who dole out these tats imbue them with all sorts of powers. Whether or not you believe that's bullshit I have to add that when you are an active participant in any culture of belief, symbology and devices can take on mythical proportions; it's very different than being on the outside looking in. Belief comes easy within the confines of an established cultural construct.
