/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - CHONK EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

Im looking for a pair of like Oxford / Derby type shoes in a less formal medium brown color (like left in picrel) that could go well with chinos or maybe some jeans of the right color.
I'm willing to spend up to like 450 bucks for a good pair of shoes that will last a long time.
Also its gotta be something in my area that I can go try on.
I have seen some shoes that I know are good quality for around 450, but for example picrel is 250 bucks, buffalo skin, doesn't tell me much, and they dont say if its top grain, full grain, or genuine leather etc. Looks OK in pics, but I dont know if they could last me 15 years or not, they dont specify if its like goodyear welted which means its probably not. On the 450 dollar shoes i found it does specify goodyear welted but even those shoes didnt say if it was top grain or full grain.
So whats the difference between buffalo skin and for example calf skin? What animal skins are good?

You don't want full grain on a dress shoe unless you want to see scarring and diaper rashes. All leather is genuine leather unless it's not actually leather.

For dress shoes you want either box calf or museum calf. These are types of tannages that have a very tight grain so you get beautiful small cracks at the bend point instead of loose grain. They also feature an aniline (shiny) finish and a corrected grain so it's nice and uniform.

I'd honestly suggest getting a grant stone oxford in your correct brannock. They use tannery annonay box calf and leather heel counters. Annonay is probably frances most famous tannery, it specializes in calf and it's owned by hermes.

When I say genuine leather I meant in the order category of leather quality that goes something like picrel, although sometimes I see different names for everything below top and full.
The shoes I buy wont be used as a dress shoe with a suit as I said, but I guess they're technically still called a dress shoe.
And as I said I gotta go with something in a shop I can visit and try the shoes.
I think Ill go for the calf ones then.
I think Ill be able to pick between decent shoes that are similar looking & priced from either Loake or Lotusse. If you are familiar with those brands is one preferable to the other? Both calf, I guess the soles might be different on the shoes so I should go with what I want there? I wanted some rubber for durability so I was thinking rubber or combination sole.

There is no leather quality ranking. If it's made of leather wouldn't that be genuine leather?

Some tanneries make great suedes, some make shit suedes. Some make good full grain, some make bad full grains. Full grain usually means no sanding the grain which is actually garbage for dress shoes or anything that needs uniformity. If you want waterproof you'd buy a waterproof tannage.

Just know your tannages.
If I'm buying a horween chromexcel shoe I know it's made with a horween chromexcel tannage. If I'm buying a cf stead kudu derby, I know it's cf stead kudu tannage. If I'm buying a grant stone I know it's an annonay box calf. Call loake or whoever you buy from and figure out the tannage they use for the upper.

Also for an oxford I'd always suggest a leather sole. If you want a long wing or derby you can pull off a toppy or maybe dainite soles.

Whatever shoe you end up buying figure out the upper tannage, if it has a real leather heel counter, and if it's good year welted. Also cork or felt filler, no foam. Those are vital to me.

I have e-mailed Loake and asked them for details on the upper tannage, if the shoes have leather heel counter, and if the filler is cork, felt or foam.

What I wanted was a medium less formal brown derby shoe, but somehow all the shoe stores in a reasonable area of me mostly have oxfords (in darker colors as suity dress shoes) and the derbies I did find were also black or very dark brown. So Im looking at mostly medium brown oxfords now as a result. I mean I don't know if the stores carry alot of shoes that don't show up on their websites or not, so before asking the stores I can only imagine that derby shoes aren't very popular around here.
Ive looked up these grant stone shoes, the Plain Toe Dune Chromexcel, Cap Toe Oxford - British Tan, and maybe even "Dirty Buck" all look nice and all-- but Ill say for a third time I have to buy something I can physically try in a store before buying, my feet are kinda wide so Im not blind buying expensive shoes online, I have searched online stores I can visit and there isn't a single result for grant stone, which also dont seem to have rubber soles on the ones I mentioned (?)

tannage = "All shoes are made from chrome tanned calf leather from various tanneries". I assume you won't like the "various tanneries" part.

going down half size, up width always works out for round toe lasts
paradoxically doing that with pointy lasts you may get toe squish, even if you are "going up a width" technically, in reality the width stays the same and the length of the boot shortens, which means the ball of the foot sits farther forward than intended and you get less toe space in front

If I spent that much on boots made purely for their fashion aesthetic and had them arrive looking like that I'd be pissed and I hope anyone else would too. Hey bro Im back again with some news.on my shoehunting
I was losing hope that Id be able to find many of qualities I would like (and that you've told me about) below 500 bucks in a place I could try the shoes first.

I found an actual derbyshoe at a shoemaker shop (they also have a workshop for shoe repairs) not just a shoe slop store in a shopping mall) that isnt the usual super formal darkbrown/black Im seeing alot online,
@400 bucks, and I talked to the store (that I can go visit) about the shoes, so hopefully the terms translate to english without confusion. There are some good and some bad, i thought it's mostly good, like the shoe might actually have some quality.

+Goodyear-welted in Portugal from a factory that only does private labels who they have worked with for 10 years.

+Cork filling under the leather binding sole, so no foam shit.

+ Shoe is calf skin/leather (I get confused when youre supposed to say skin or leather).

- "I dont know what tanneries deliver the skin". So that's kinda like Loake in the sense that its just vaguely "various tanneries".

-?
"Synthetic heel cap".
Is this the basically the same as "celastic"? or is it just fake leather heel cap instead of "real leather".so it would basically function the same?

They invited me to visit and look at more shoes that werent online perhaps, so for that visit I would like to ask, if they cant say which tannery tans the shoes, if they could say how they are tanned.
And when they say how the shoe is tanned I would like to have your opinion for reference. For example so far ive heard vegetable (oil??) tanned, chrome tanned etc.
Which of these methods to tan the leather are good/bad/preferable, does it matter?

>how the shoe is tanned
Leather is either tanned using vegetable tanning, chrome tanning or a combination of the two. Vegetable tanning uses natural materials to tan the leather. The end result is usually stiffer and more durable than chrome tan. Some people like veg tan leather for boots because it has great depth of color and patinas really nicely but it can require more care and it's possible to get stains if you're not careful. Chrome tanning uses chromium salts to tan the leather and leads to a softer, more flexible leather. Chrome tanned leather is much more static than veg tanned and will keep a consistent color. Combination tanning uses a mix of the two to try and get the best of both, but the output will vary based on the qualities that the tannery is aiming to achieve with the combination process being used.

they actually have good QC because they are produced in a chinese factory on contract, but stored, inspected and shipped out of a US warehouse
chyna vs US aside it's better just by virtue of having someone not involved in producing the boot put their eyes on them and doing the QC

what's not great about it is that the faggots in the US insist on conditioning the boots with VSC before shipping, which is questionable to do to a new boot by itself, but they do an absolutely half-assed job
the shoes i got from them had hazy brush streaks of white wax all over and the right shoe was a whole shade darker than the left
this wasn't a clicking issue, because it wasn't one or two panels of leather that were darker it was the whole shoe and with time and a lot of brushing it evened out, still noticable if you know to look for it
basicly they put the VSC on a brush smear it in one boot and what's left of it on the brush gets smeared into the other boot, which will always be uneven

the manufacturer, viberg, stopped resoling their own boots 2 years ago, because it's almost impossible to get a clean result with a machine stitcher, where they restitch through every original hole and don't have one row of stitching jump into the other row
pic is a resole from viberg and the reason why they don't bother anymore
they now have only 2 authorized repair shops worldwide: devitos and bakers, both machine stitch
there are non-authorized cobblers that will do it, but giving them to someone who has never worked on them is a sure way to get burned

the only real way to resole them is to handsitich the sole and most cobblers won't do it

They aren't gussetted. Their stuff is nice and I had 2 pairs from them. A natural roughout donkey puncher and brown horsebutt ludlow. the most impressive part of them was how the leather clicking on my pairs were just about perfect. There was basically no visible creasing on the donkey punchers and the ludlows just had a single, fine crease, across the forefoot. They weren't perfect overall though, I had 2 major issues with them. On the donkey punchers it felt like the left boot was just missing the cork and was extremely hard underfoot. The ludlows had a bigger issue, the rolled top on my right boot was rolled inward instead of outward at one section in the back. If I didn't wear a bandage it would rub the top of my ankle raw even through thick, wool, socks. Sold both of them on because they just weren't comfortable to wear. I could have just gotten 2 lemons, but that was my experience with them. Plenty of other people have good things to say and outside those issues they were very nice.

Yeah, I always had issues with their sizing and their lasts, tried so many and nothing was really comfortable for me. I don't think they are the most anatomical thing out there and my toes always felt constricted. I also tried stretching them but they just did not give. And I also feel like I'm done with heavy brogues.

I ended selling all of them for a few bucks just to get rid of them and bought 4: iron boots, Crockett and Jones, Alden, Vibergs and couldn't be happier. I realized a bit too late that is better to have the best I can afford instead of having a lot just because they were cheaper or on sale. I end up using what I have and enjoy them instead of having a lot of boxes to stare at.

On my wish list I have:
Navy blue chukka boots, like CJ Chiltern but they don't make them in my size
Black teacore service boots, like Vibergs on the 2040
Dark brown grain leather longwings, I tried carmina and I liked them better than CJ but they are super super narrow
Medium brown Penny loafers in shell, maybe CJ Harvards
