actually yeah, that could work, a gmt style hand with indices marked on bezel or the rim
Are there any that do that? I think that could look sweet, because it makes that hand revolve in a week
>>18145999
I feel like I'd rather have the bluro or the pure black, the red second hand looks way cleaner on the black & the two tone bezel looks a bit odd. Why did they start doing that? I could maybe see it for GMT to indicate whether it's offset by 12h or not, but for divers ?

I know solar companies turn over salesmen fast as fuck and are generally out of business in a couple years. I like what I do. I don't do bid work, I do insurance claim work exclusively. There are a billion roofing contractors, but very few that know how to work multi-million dollar insurance claims. Insurance companies, especially now, have a long and elaborate process to attempt to fuck the policyholder. I'm really good at turning it against them. Margins are way higher on claims work, but sometimes they take goddamn forever. The Denver ones won't, hopefully...they are probably all fucked up. One time I asked for one billion dollars in F-35s and they gave me three billion dollars worth. I said, "Wow, three for free!" and the nice friendly American Congressman laughed and said, "I'm going to call you 3-for-free-Is-rae-li".

Now Congress greets me with "hey, it's 3-for-free-Is-rae-li!" and ALWAYS gives me three billion dollars worth of F-35s. It's such a fun and cool atmosphere here at the Israeli Ministry of Defense. I go beg Congress at least 3 times a week for advanced fighter jets, 1-2 times for Patriot missiles on the weekend, and maybe once for high powered laser systems when I'm in a rush, but want a great networked defense system that is affordable, fast, and can match my daily Palestinian destruction needs.

I even sell their weapons technology to the Chinese! it's highly classified! What a great country.

Currently between 600 and 800 dollars, but the price varies based on the services that need to be performed and the parts that need to be replaced.

>Do you service them every 5-10 years?
Watchmakers will tell you there's no need to service a watch unless it's not running well. If it's still got its power reserve, if it's still keeping time, it doesn't need to be serviced.
The only exception to this rule is in regards to water resistance. Gaskets break down over time and need to be replaced to ensure water resistance. If you don't plan on diving or swimming with your DD, then it's a non-issue.

600-800 dollars IS actually quite cheap for that market segment. Servicing a chronograph from a brand in that segment will easily top a grand. Servicing a simple three-hand automatic from a top level brand will cost around 1200 and up.

Plus, it's once every dozen years or so. My father's been wearing the same Datejust for the last 30 years. He's had it serviced twice in that time. It runs perfectly.

If you can afford a 20k+ Day-Date, spending 800 bucks once per decade is peanuts.

Then the last is my "don't give a fuck" shoes. I'll wear these to trod through some mud or whatever. When that pair gets too bad I but a new pair and downgrade the nice casual pair.

Went to a smallish local watch store to check out some watches in person for the first time and it made me realise two things
First it's absurd how tiny most watches look. Let's me know I'll probably want a 44mm or at the very minimum 40mm to not feel like I'm wearing a child's watch. Kinda sad because I was considering picking up a 36mm expecting it to still look fine
Secondly, after all the shitposting about how bad Seiko presage looks in person, I was amazed by how nice they actually looked. All the ones they had on display had amazing looking dials that didn't really scream for attention but were interesting enough to hold it. Definitely the best looking watches they had, with some of the citizens taking second place

Don't knock a 36mm watch. Even if 40mm watch "looks" better, whatever that means to you, smaller lighter watches are much more comfortable for watches you intend to wear all day every day. If you're only going to wear your watch when you go out on the weekends maybe that doesn't matter, but a watch that goes with you everywhere every day is best if it's thin, light weight, conforms easily to your wrist, and isn't going to get in the way so much if you're reaching into drawers and whatnot. I have 40mm watches I wear on vacation or for kayaking or camping or whatever but my daily and work watches are between 36mm and 38mm.

My wrist is over 7.5 inches. Diameter isn't really what takes up your wrist, it's lug-to-lug that does that. That's why people say the 36mm oyster case rolexes wear like 38-40mm watches, because the lugs are relatively large. They're thinner across the dial so they look and feel a little more like a bracelet but the case still fills out your wrist.

My wrist is big enough that I can and do make 46mm diameter watches work. The question is do I really want to? Is that comfortable? No, I start to feel it after a day and a half or so and switch to something else. It doesn't feel natural. Why wear a bigger watch just because you can?

>Doesn't small dial but big lug to lug feels mismatched? I imagine if there's too much case and not enough watch it'll look weird as well.
It depends on the style of the watch. There are tricks to make the watch look smaller or bigger as well, things like lug width, bezel thickness, dial size in comparison to the watch diameter, etc. Another thing to note is that wrists are 3 dimensional objects and unique, so a watch on two wrists of the same circumference can look very different depending on whether the wrist is flat or rounded, wide or not so wide. There are general formulas for which watch best suits which size wrist, but ultimately it's for the wearer to decide whether a watch looks and feels good on his wrist or not.

Buying luxury goods can create a financial burden (unless, of course, you can afford to pay for them).

The luxury goods market is worth billions and is growing, though research indicates that people are cutting back on non-essential spending across the U.S. and Europe.

People buy luxury goods despite not being able to afford them for several reasons, including a sense of irrationality, a belief that a higher price equals higher quality, a desire for higher self-esteem, and a desire for a sense of accomplishment.

It is literally not the smart thing to do. Objectively speaking, from a logical stand point, you should use your money to live as good a life as possible. If you have the disposable income to comfortably spend 15k on a watch just for fun, and that will improve your life for whatever childish reason, that is the best course of action. I agree with your first point, but I disagree with the second. Each way to spend money has a value, a metric at which it improves your enjoyment of life
The enjoyment you'll get from a 500-1000$ watch and spending the other 14-14.5k elsewhere will in almost all scenarios be higher than buying a 15k watch. In the scenarios where it doesn't, you likely have such an absurd amount of money that spending money is irrelevant

You make a fair point, for the vast majority of people this is probably true. I think you are actually right. But, I guess, we are basically saying that people who are not very rich and who think that they should have a 15k watch are actually having the wrong priorites, because, for whatever reason, they would value spending that money on other things more (like travel or a bigger house). But then, isn't it so strange that broke or even middle class people will buy a rolex and never sell it even though they could get most of their money back to spend on something else. Youtube is full of these people. Are they just totally delusional?

>> No.18147024

I think as you keep something, it gains sentimental value. I have been wearing the same extremely cheap necklace for nearly two decades now and have spent like several dozen times the actual cost on getting it repaired just twice when it broke. The item is worth more than the value. I think a lot of people who bought these items, either when they purchased them or at a later point, felt a desire to pass it on to their child.
Something unique that comes with these expensive items as well, is that there might be a sense of "failure" if you sell it again later down the line. Like you give up on it because you didn't manage to make enough money to be happy, or whatever. Admitting this can be hard, so it can be easier to hold on to it so as to not have to admit that. Basically it's saying "I am not good enough to own a Rolex", because you tried it and had to give up at a later point.

Forgive me for sperging out but hold on. I feel like there are two options, either he has made a mistake and should sell the watch, or he has not made a mistake a should not sell the watch. I think you are arguing that there is a third option, that he has made a mistake five years ago but should not sell the watch because he has formed an emotional attachment to it now. I don't think this makes sense.

If he has made a mistake by buying his watch, and he is in a position to sell his watch a fix his mistake, then surely, if he were rational, he would sell, regardless of much time has passed. Even if he would feel bad about selling the watch, he still should sell it because the pain of selling a five year old watch that you have formed an attachment to surely does not outweigh the pain of spending the extra money on better things.

If it does, then I don't think that we can call buying the watch a mistake, because then you are basically saying that, five years down the line, he will get no benefit from switiching his choice. I think that we can agree that choices should be made with the long term in mind. Therefore, if you think that switiching if 5 years does not make sense, you would have to admit that, if the person was anticipating that he would from a connection to the watch (which is reasonable to assume) that he did not actually make a mistake in the first place. Because, in five years time, he would be no better off if he sold the watch. If he would be better off selling the watch even in five years then we are back to the previous paragraph, which means that he is making a significant mistake by buying the watch or keeping it five years down the line.

The first option is interesting because it forces us to say that the kinds of people who keep rolexes due to emotion are irrational if they have limited funds. The second option is a problem for you because it means that buying a rolex was never a mistake.

The mistake has been made, that cannot be changed. Once you purchase it you can never return to the original position. Imagine chopping off your foot or gambling & losing 10k in a casino. What comes after that is an entirely separate decision. You can never return to how things were before the decision because even if you sell it, you are 5 years in the future. The question now isn't "should I have bought this watch 5 years ago, aka could I have done better things with the money", the question is now "should I sell this watch now or keep it, aka would selling it allow me to do better things with the money". The difference between the two options in the first question is bigger than in the second.
Not only is there the possibility of investing it or whatever, the value is also simply lower. 15k at let's say 25 is worth more than 15k (or hell, let's say it went up slightly in value and you get to sell it at 17.5k) at 30, five years later. This is both because you have less freedom in your life, less ability to enjoy it and more money (most likely).

In fact, I would say it is a better choice to not buy the watch five years ago and buy it after the 5 years than it is to buy it early.
