made a couple small retard scratches on the underside of the lugs while removing the springbars from my explorer. they're not that deep and aren't really noticeable, but they'll bug the shit out of me compared to scratches from regular wear. any easy way to get rid of these at home?

>> No.18137360

>>18137356
You can file out the scratches then cover them up with increasingly fine grades of sandpaper, but you're better off just getting used to them.
It's way too easy to make the problem a million times worse until you get some experience with metal refinishing.

>> No.18137362

I think the white with roman numerals would go good with more strap than the green dial. The champagne looks more classic and works best with the bracelet but it feels less versatile.

The 18238 is probably the best value Rolex you can get from a GM.

Weight = 140 grams
Gold price today = $100 per gram
18k / 24k = 75% or 25% difference
$14000-25% = $10500

The gold alone is worth $10500, and these can be had on from a trusted GM for $14k-16k.

The DJ41 comes from the worst era of Rolex: the 2000s. During that decade they've also released :
>the Sky Dweller
>the Air King 40mm
>the Explorer 39mm
>the Yacht Master 2
>the Milgauss 40mm
>two tone Daytona
It's also the decade of the maxi cases, polished center links, ceramic bezel and tacky shit like pearl dials or whatever. Everything that still sucks with Rolex nowadays literally comes from that cursed decade. I particularly despise the DJ41 because it's a textbook example of Rolex denying their own design principles. Fuck whoever buys that shit and fuck Rolex for keeping it in their catalogue.

>> No.18137401

Fortunately, someone at Rolex has an ounce of sense because the Milgauss and YM2 have been discontinued, while the Explorer 36mm was resurrected.

The problem is they just increased the case size. The lug width should have been increased to allowed the tips of the lugs flow into the bracelet instead of just abruptly stopping.

Everything else is because the movement is too small. The minute numbers on the minute track let Rolex move the indices further in so they would line up with the date aperture. But the dial couldn't be made too much bigger otherwise the cyclops would be way too far inboard so they made the bezel incredibly wide instead.

If they wanted to keep the proportions of the Datejust, they should have created a whole new movement.

I know this watch is one of those 'you need to buy this first to unlock the Overseas,' but I think it's a good dress watch. My only issue is if I buy it used at $10k will it stay like that or will it start dropping more. I've seen some on Chrono24 go for less than a grand but those are SS and quartz. VC just doesn't sound like the holy trinity when their watches drop so much in value.

No offense but this might be an actual mental block that you just have to get over. It affects a lot of people, they just psychically cannot handle the idea of a lot of money leaving their bank account all at once even if it's a good purchase, even if it's a good investment that they know will increase the value of their property or other assets they just can't part with the money.

Theres a guy I work with who is one of those old boomers that is in his 70s still working, shows no signs of retiring, and does every hour of overtime they'll allow him to do, and he just socks all the money away in his bank account like he's trying to reach a high score. He never bought a house because his apartment rent was cheap as hell and he couldn't part with the money on a down payment. He just bought a used truck and FINANCED IT even though he coupd have paid cash 50 times over for it. Has no wife, no kids, literally has nore money than he knows what to do with to a point where when he finally died he's just going to leave it to his church. He doesn't have jack shit because he just couldn't say goodbye to money.

I know people get mad when you act like watches are an investment, but in the case of Rolexes your money is relatively safe. If you buy that used daydate for $20k, even if you later decide to sell of and you only get $15k for it, odds are that $20k probably did better than the other $20k you left in your bank account after inflation. It probably did better than the money you put in half of the low to middling stocks and funds you put noney in during that time. That's why diversity in stuff you're buying is good, because ultimately you have no idea what anything will be worth 10 years from now.

I know what you mean. Where I live currently is pretty close to the transmitter. The watch syncs in about 15-30 seconds, probably even less if I put it next to a window. It's during holidays, when I'm further away (countries further) when the problems arise with the signal. Sometimes it doesn't sync at all.
Apparently, though, there seems to be a workaround to this. There are some apps that can use your phone speaker to recreate the signal and trick your watch into thinking (so to say) that it is actually receiving signals from the original transmitters.

Whenever I read stuff like that, it makes me feel many things. On one hand, I feel sad for him because he obviously has never lived his life, not only to his full potential but not even 10% of it. On the other hand, he made his own choices and he has to live with the consequences. Maybe he will start living his life at 83? It's up to the individual. He probably grew up in a post-war family household where his parents were all like "Save up save up war can come at any moment" and he still lives like it's the cold war. Needless to say, to many of us, he has wasted his life away, I hope that he doesn't see it that way too.
Another thing that I feel [when reading stuff like that], is that I am very happy about my life choices because at 31 I have experienced enough for three lifetimes already. Many mistakes where made, many hearts broken, a lot of money lost- but I will never again be 26 driving my dreamcar on the racetrack, I will never be 30 again traveling the world and living in the country that I always wanted to live in. Money comes and goes, your age doesn't.
Clichè but, the older I get the more I understand how pretty much everybody is wrong about everything because there isn't a single person in my life that I would like to swap lives with, not even close. Most are trapped inside their comfort zones and are too scared to even make half a step outside said zone, but to society, this is the right way of thinking. Society is scared of people living outside the bubble, they want everyone to confirm their lackluster and boring choices in life, they want everyone to do the same.
We saw that during the plandemic anyway, who has a free will and who doesn't.

Submariner average 7 years ago was 10k (according to some fucking gay ass site), it is now 18k. If you had instead put that 10k into the S&P500 for 7 years, you'd have 21.8k (based on some other gay ass site)
Datejust average 4 years ago was 28k, now it's 42k. Said 28k into the S&P500 would have turned into 48k.
Also keep in mind, the price of rolexes has been steadily going down the last two years, likely due to cryptobros dumping theirs (which likely also caused the rise when they bought them). As such money in the bank over the last two years was a better idea than buying a rolex

I think buying rolexes as an investment is a bad idea because they just pump them out so the second hand market keeps growing

I feel like unlike other investments, rolexes are far more of a gamble than an investment. Don't get me wrong, adding some gambles to your "portfolio" (god I hate that word) is perfectly fine. Why not put a thousand or so into crypto. I put in a measly 100 and over time I have tripled that money without ever putting in any more. However, if you see it as a truly good investment, I think you're a little delusional. I will say it's not as bad as I expected, if you want to buy one to wear, you won't really lose much on average and will likely even come out ahead when you decide to sell it if it's in a similar state. However as an investment I feel like too much work goes into it (both to buy and to sell) for a gamble with mediocre returns (on average).

Basically, if you're not going to wear it, I think buying it is a bad idea. If you are going to wear it, it's a pretty good idea.

As for savings account, I see it more as an emergency fund than anything else. If something serious happens and you need money, that's what savings is for. It's not just where you should put everything and wait

The most major commodity people buy is probably gold. It's basically as good as money, lots of people will readily pay market value for it. Cars are another example, they're useful and pretty easy to find someone to take them off your hands, but the obvious issue is they quickly depreciate in value and you will never get what you paid for it. That's true across the board for cars unless we're talking about the highest of high end Italian sports cars(that you have to be on a fucking list to have one built for you) or historical relics like one of Paul Newman's cars, or a car some company only made 100 of so it could be legal in some production car race they wanted to enter.

Other than that we're in the realm of collectables and shit. Sitting on some old video games and trading cards and rare whiskeys and shit expecting their value will go up. This is more hobbyist type stuff, and it's where we are in watches, but if you know what you're doing you can make a little money. But that shouldn't be your goal, this is stuff you should buy because you like it. I couldn't imagine tracking market movements on magic the gathering cards and trying to make market moves on it if I wasn't interested in magic the gathering.

I don't take the concept of the "collector's journey" as consoooming as such, it's more about learning about yourself and your tastes over time through having experience with trying on and day to day wear of different watches.

For instance, I used to think watches with a lot of complications were automatically better. They can do more stuff and everyone can see how cool my do it all watch is by its volume, why wouldn't they be better? But over time and trying different watches and wearing them in different circumstances I learned that I like a little thin watch that's not going to be in the way and is comfortable with a lot of different clothes. I like a thin watch, the thinner the better. I never thought I'd like metal bracelets but through wearing them and playing around with sizes I found it's the best way to wear a watch as long as you're not doing athletic shit. But then even after that, I thought I'd never like Panerai because they're big bricks but after trying one on I could understand how good and fun it feels to wear them even though they're big and heavy. You just have to try a lot of stuff and see if you're in or not.

Where's the lie though? Smaller watches are more comfortable, just like smaller bracelet links make for a more comfortable bracelet. It's a geometric fact.

Not only that but I'm a mechanic and I wear beater automatic watches for work, and it's just simply way easier and more comfortable to reach into tight spaces and roll around in the frame of a machine with a small watch. Same for thibks like hiking and camping, when you're not doing it it's easy to say "just life more weights fag" when people talk about choosing gear that's a couple ounces lighter, but ounces can add up to pounds pretty quickly and you really start to feel it 9 or so hours into a 3 day hike.

Bottom line, if you could use a tool that is smaller and lighter without the function being impared in any way, why wouldn't you?

I'm going on the wild assumption that you understand what gilding means, which does seems to be my only mistake. You wrote it as the guilding was bronze.

At any rate, it's one of the more puerile arguments you've come up with, that the guilded components aren't solid.

The most comfortable size depends on the size of your wrist, because it's meant to match it well.
>simply way easier and more comfortable to reach into tight spaces and roll around in the frame of a machine with a small watch
The thickness will matter far more here, and in that scenario, I do admit that thinner is better within reason. Thick watches can also be a pain with them catching more on cuffs

>Bottom line, if you could use a tool that is smaller and lighter without the function being impared in any way, why wouldn't you?
Because it is less comfortable
As an example, just a week ago I used a small & light chain breaker on my bike. Did it work? Yes, but a bigger tool would have been better to use.

That's just what they call it, it's not actually gold.

The 2 tone watches give you real gold hands and gold on the bezel and bracelet, but even then they're transparent about how little gold you're actually getting. you get a 0.2-0.4 millimeter thick "cap" of gold on the gold surfaces.

Actually, I'm not even totally sure the hands are gold on the 2 tone models. The descriptions don't explicitly say. But we just went over their stated process of making hands where they are unambiguously made with brass.

A smaller chain tool has less leverage which impacts the function. A smaller watch does the same job with no impact to function. That's the point. If you discovered a way it was physically possible to make a hammer that hit like a 10 pound hammer but was half the size of a typical 10 pound hammer everyone that wanted a 10 pound hammer would buy your hammer. There would be no reason not to.

I defy you to find a 40mm watch more comfortable to wear on literally anybody than a 36mm watch. Keep in mind comfortable does not mean looking good. Smaller links in a chain physically conform closer to surfaces than larger ones. It's not debatable.

Aren't dials usually made from brass and not bronze?

are manual watches a pain in the ass? How often do you have to wind them?

The movements look prettier than automatic movements.

Depending on the context they can be easier actually. If we're talking about a dress watch you'll only wear a couple times a year, a nice super thin watch with no complications you can just set and go works really well, and even if you are going to be out wearing it for 2 or 3 days a full wind will probably be enough power reserve to get you through that time.

Generally you should wind your watch at the same time every day to keep the spring tension consistent each day. So wind it up when you pick it up off of your dresser or when you're waiting for your coffee. It's advisable to take the watch off when you're winding it, so you need 2 hands free to do it, but other than that it's not a big deal.
