"Appreciate" has nothing to do with spending money, Anon; the two are separate. I say, 'to hell with the rest', because of the unfortunate influences that push watch Frens to buy watches for the reasons other than they actually love the watch above all others.

Further, I disagree with 'appreciate what others like'. While I'll always try to understand why someone likes something that I find measurably awful, sometimes it's impossible for me to appreciate something just because someone else does. Nothing will ever make me find modern Rolex max cases more aesthetically successful than their older smaller cases, for example, no matter how many people like them. I don't appreciate those watches; I dislike them.

Finally, watches are fun, and part of that fun is arguing about what makes a watch 'great' and comparing/contrasting different attempts. I won't however do the WUS thing where everyone loves everything...a little too saccharine for me.

What are you wearing today, Fren?

I have friends who own them, and I've had a week with one (Mars). I think they're fun. The issue is the price; they really should be around 100$ most, not higher. The premium is to induce a perception of status, so while I understand the motive, I wouldn't buy one myself at that price. As a watch, I'd give it a quick breakdown:
1) Fit - close to normal fit of a Speedy, so it looks great on most wrists. Very comfortable once you get it on a decent strap, as the watch is extremely lightweight.
2) Aesthetic - I love the different colours, and if I were to buy one, I'd go with the yellow sun one (because it's fun and the sunburst dial looks great in person). Further, each model seems to have 1 or two unique design elements that existed on previous speedmasters (including the reduced model), so that's cool.
3) Performance - I didn't have problems (like broken pushers or shit like that), and the chrono functioned reliably and enjoyable. As for time keeping, I didn't really check, but it's a quartz...what can one expect? On the model I had, the chrono-seconds hand lined up nicely with the indices at near 12, but I think it was a little off around 4. Again, not a deal-breaker, just a sign of what it is.

It's the kind of watch I'd have while going to a carnival or a picnic.

Have you handled them yet, Fren?

>>18101363
The next question I would ask if anyone said that to me would be, "why would I invest in you?" To put it another way, you must show that you can contribute to society in a meaningful and positive way in order for me to consider investing in you.

If you are suggesting a form of charity, then that might be a different story, and a potentially tragic one at that.

I don't know what you mean that they're susceptible to climate? Temperature, air pressure? Temperature is usually constant indoors so the effect is negligible and it is easy to compensate for that.
Maybe you are talking about non fusee spring clocks which drift based on their wind. I've gotten one of those to run well beyond standard quartz accuracy by micro adjustments.

The other is a Waltham Vanguard sidewinder with a 'Canadian' dial. Love it.

Clocks: both temperature and humidity seem to affect the older clocks (i.e. 19th century grandfather and long-case) a lot, and since I like to have the windows open as much as possible when I'm home, the clocks simply aren't 'happy' enough to keep good time. Climate control is perfect for these things, but I like fresh air when I'm not forced into climate control. So, I moved them up to the cottage, where they flux even harder with whatever they get, and when I'm up there I can wind them up and enjoy them for a break. But I don't really care if they keep time up there (which is the point of getting away from it all, isn't it?).

>>18101428
It has a power reserve because the movement is the 5011k; in my version, it also has the optional moonphase. Most accurate timepiece I own. As for price; I got it for astonishingly low; I think it had been on the selling block for years and the brick-and-mortar was desperate to get rid of it. While I think they knew what it was, they couldn't find a buyer for so long that they were grateful for it to be off their hands. Right now they're around 6-8k on chrono24; I got mine for less than half.

>>18101437
First thing to do is try on as many instore as you can. Omega, Rolex, Breitling, Tudor, etc. Just see what works on you wrist, what sizes and shapes, what colours work with your skin tone, what things your eyes like, etc. Then consider complications (do you want a chronograph? date function? etc.). Then have a look at the grey market (ebay, chrono24, etc.) to see what the real prices are for these watches. Then start to narrow it down. If you love looking at the watch, you'll love having it no matter what. If you need its functions, you'll love it even more.

As for the price; go into it knowing that you will lose the money.

Okay, then it looks like you have narrowed down some concerns over what you know you'd like and what you don't.

A tough question you have to consider is if you're buying 'for life' or if you are leaving the door open to resell later. This directly affects if you should buy something, and what condition you will want it in. As an example, if you plan to resell, then always buy full set (i.e. box, papers, everything); it'll make your advertisement far more enticing than having just the watch. On the other hand, if you never plan to sell, then getting one without is fine as long as you are convinced of the authenticity (and can verify that authenticity before you complete the transaction). Stuff like that.

Yeah, the S-D is the more elegant piece. The sports watch Santos is better if you need a bracelet or the 100m of water resistance.
It's also a better one-watch collection since you can easily swap between the bracelet and a leather strap.

With a nice suit and a tailored shirt, the Santos-Dumont is far more of a killer's watch.

Thank you, Fren. It's a nice gateway pocket watch to get into the hobby if one is looking to do so. Every once in a while I think about getting one of those Hamilton Model 22 deck watches, because I think the Hamilton pocket watches in general are truly excellent from that period of time...but I never really get to it. As I've mentioned on /wt/ before, I'm done buying watches now.

>>18101456
That's what I did. Only one of my serious wristwatches was bought 'new' (the Citizen); everything else was pre-owned. Of the pre-owned, only one has box and papers, and those are truly a waste of space. I took a route that was unusual for collecting: I curated a list, added/removed from that list for about a decade, and then finally just started to acquire the pieces that survived on the list. This way I could be sure I would be happy with the choices, and that they were serve me well. Simple watches like an Omega Speedmaster (3570.50, 1861 movement) are plentiful, so you just buy the lowest priced one and send it to Omega for servicing (where they replace nearly everything, polish it up, and send it back to you 'like new', which is their service policy). If you got one for, say, 3500 USD, and send it into Omega for servicing (another 750-900 depending on region and parts), then for 4500 or so, you have a 'brand new' 1861 Speedmaster hesalite. That's a better price than one that is on the grey market being advertised as 'recently serviced' (but you have no guarantee the quality of that service).

For all of my vintage watches, I have a watchmaker I trust who takes care of them. He's seen the inside of everything from my 321 to my Holy Grail, and he pulls all of my mechanicals into the performance tolerances I require. I don't trust Omega to service my vintage watches, but anything past the change to SuperLuminova I'll happily send to Omega because if they replace parts, it doesn't alter the value of the watch. With older ones, it can.

Maybe I should clarify that a bit. There's nothing wrong with getting a watch at an AD/Boutique except the price. Rolex is one of the few brands where they gain on the secondary market, but for the vast majority of watches, they'll lose value immediately as you walk out the store. If you go the route of buying grey market, you have to do a tonne of research (mainly comparing prices, desirability of models, learning to distinguish the genuine from frankenwatches or fakes, etc.), but in the end it could save you if you're careful and persistent.

If, however, you just want to buy a 'nice watch', one for life, and then continue on, then for simplicity I'd probably just go into a boutique, get the watch I want, and move on. You'll have to wait if the watch is desirable right now (waiting for Rolex is normal for certain models, waiting for Omega for a few models, etc.) but if you just want, say, a two-tone Rolex Datejust, I'm sure you could get one from an AD in a month. Getting a normal Omega Speedmaster from an AD? Probably could walk in and out with one in the same day. Like so many things, the more precise you are about which model you want, the more help we can give here on /wt/.

Makes sense, and prices have gone up of course. As for 'knowing everything that has happened to my stuff'...quite honestly, with mechanical watches they are something akin to the Ship of Theseus. If you send your watch into servicing with a reputable brand (i.e Rolex, Omega, etc.), they'll strip it down, clean everything, replace any component that shows wear (including outer parts like the bezel and crystal), replace all pushers and crowns, polish everything back to factory condition (while losing some metal as a result), and handing the watch back to you. If it's been serviced, the lived 'history' of the watch is to a great degree erased. cont.

cont.
That's why for me it doesn't matter if the history is erased IF the watch is post-SuperLuminova change for Omega. The dials are not going to patina after this, and the watches are essentially modern. Pre-SuperLuminova is my personal cutoff, where Omega would replace those parts with modern ones that are not the same in design or execution as the originals. Not even caring if the history of the watch is maintained, if I sent in my Holy Grail, Omega would replace the dial with a service dial that has superluminova but is different to the original. The hands would also be service hands (different design), etc. God only knows what would happen if I sent in the 66 cal. 321 (actually, I know what would happen: the pushers would have to be replaced and re-drilled, the crown would be replaced and the wrong size, the bezel would be replaced and wrong design, the dial would be replaced and look odd due to the long indices being too thin, etc.). The watch would change, in other words.

So, for old vintage, you really are deciding about how much history you maintain from one owner to the next, but with modern, the only thing it will pick up is scratches (which the boutiques will buff out in service anyway). What do you think?

Honestly, the Speedmaster is a temporary watch. You buy it because "OMG MOON! basedface!" then you get tired of it and sell it.
That's how it is for most people. Buy it used and as cheaply as possible so when you sell it you don't lose any more.
>I bought one, it was fine. Nice watch, not for me.

There's always the chance you're one of the sticky virgins who get really, REALLY into the Speedmaster, in which case you'll end up owning like five of the exact same watch.

I agree with this Anon about the Speedy on the marketplace; it is by far the most traded Omega on the secondary market, due to this very thing; people buy it, decide they don't actually like it, and then sell it. There's always one to buy, and always someone trying to sell. You don't see that with other, more niche choices.

>>18101486
It's definitely more legible than the dear old Rolex Cosmograph, that's for sure. The Speedy has classic proportions, an iconic design, and due to the marketing represents a kind of 'club' that some people aspire to be a part of. But again, this is why my phrase, 'buy what you love and to hell with the rest' comes into play.

I own Omegas because I love their designs and their performance. I wear them for me, and for no one else. Having a 'watch journey' is irrelevant to me, and hearing if a watch reviewer likes or dislikes it is, again, irrelevant. All that should matter when you buy your watch is if you love looking at it on your wrist. Further, price matters less as time goes by, but quality will always endure.

That's exactly the point, though. It looks neat. Once you have to live with it, you quickly learn why there's so many of them for so cheap on the used market.

Winding them, in particular, is a pain in the ass.

Speaking from experience, I own a number of hand-winding watches from Panerai to Cartier and no watch was more of a pain in the ass to wind than the Speedmaster. The crown is deeply set into the guards and the bezel overhangs the crown so you can't get a good grip on it. You end up winding it with a million little quarter turns.

Should be around 8k after discounts. Just ask and they'll play ball.

As for the Reverso pricing itself...you have to swim across an ocean of angry tears.

For a long time, the Reverso was wildly undervalued and you could get them for cheap. Then someone at Richemont realized that the watch was undercosted based on the competition and raised prices accordingly....and then raised prices a little further for no reason, especially since the wacth itself has barely changed in 30 years
>undervalued to fair to overpriced

Now, there's all sorts of bitching about the watch as if it's now a piece of shit and not a great watch being sold by a shitty corporate conglomerate.
It's no different than people hating Rolex (the watch) because Rolex (the company) couldn't meet demand for its most popular models during the recent spike in popularity.

Exactly.

On the left side are pushers that increment or decrement the second timezone.
There are indicators on the dial to let you know when it's AM or PM in either timezone.

On the right side, at 2 o'clock is a pusher that turns the alarm on or off. The bell-shaped aperture lets you know if the alarm is active.
The crown at 4 o'clock is how you wind the movement, set the time, and set the alarm time. The apertures under the bell let you know the alarm time and whether it's set for AM or PM.
The date corrector is hidden between the lugs at 6 o'clock.

It's a very handy travel watch purely in terms of functionality. Considering it's fragile, gold, and only has 30m of WR, though, I would not want to risk taking it on vacation.

I think it is.
In-house movement, 200m WR, still very thin, decent bracelet. Very cool looking dial. (I prefer the petrol green, myself.)

Sure, you can get Aqua Terras for around the same price and Omega will always offer more brand recognition. You can get a Seiko or a microbrand for much cheaper, but it's not going to be as well engineered as the Nomos.
If you buy it new and plan to sell it later on, just be aware that Nomos does not hold it's value well.

It's not a rip-off, certainly, but whether it's a "good" value is up to you.

I am 90% confident I will pull the trigger on a nomos watch. The fact that it is lesser known is maybe even a feature for somebody extremely self aware like me. I prefer to fly under the radar. Thats why I just sold my bmw 7 series last week. I loved the car but I felt self conscious about it

This is the smallest watch I have that could be worn today (i.e. it's still working); I always need to wear it through a sleep session in order for it to look right to my eyes.

If you do wake up and it still looks awfully small, wear it overnight and see what the next day brings. If it's still small, then your eyes will always tell you that it's too small.

I think a wristwatch on a plain white shirt would make me look like a waiter in a fancy pizzeria. I'll be taking your advice to heart though, I will be discreet.

the funniest thing about DW to me is the fake brand name history they made up, about randomly meeting some guy named Daniel Wellington and being "inspired by his style" or whatever, then just stealing his name

Wearing a watch does not make you look fancy typically

I was clearing out my dead uncle's house and I found this quartz Seamaster 120. As you can see at some point I guess the battery leaked and completely fucked the dial, and a bit the hands. Additionally the winder needs some attention
BUT I really like it as a watch. I like the medium weight of it, I like that it's not as chunky as the 350, it's not too flashy or too plain. I even like the wear on the bezel, it gives it character.

Do you think it's worth fixing up? Or with the cost of getting the winder looked at, plus a new dial, should I just part it out and look around for a relatively cheap one to buy

if it has sentimental value then sure. if you want it ticking again and dont care what it looks like then sure. if you want it running, looking as good as a nice used version and dont care it was your dead uncles then no.
