>Conversely, your definition is completely subjective gatekeeping, and the only purpose it serves is to get into pissing matches on fragrance forums. It's just absurdly useless.
It's also completely redundant. If "niche" means a fragrance that is unique and artistic, just say that. We don't need a new term to further muddy the already convoluted water that constitutes the perfume business.

But the best part is that the gatekeepy definition anon keeps using cannot exist without tacitly acknowledging the other definition is objectively meaningful and necessary. If we're going to define a niche brand as a fragrance house which makes unique and artistic fragrances, why couldn't that term apply to designer fragrances? What if (insert the name of whatever perfumer you think makes artsy and unique fragrances) goes and makes a unique and artsy fragrance for Montblanc or Tommy Bahama or Chanel, or Dior, or Versace, or Gucci, or Guerlain, or Nickelodeon, or Prada, or Nautica, or Dunhill, or English Laundry, or Paco Rabanne. Would those then become niche houses?

The criteria a listed perfectly and objectively describes two different kinds of fragrance houses. These distinctions require names. The names a designer and niche. It's not even really a debate, it's a simple fact. Niche does not mean "whatever fragrance me and my very tasteful and sophisticated peers personally like the most"

>Whether a house is niche or designer says nothing about the quality
we’ve already gone over this multiple times, i don’t know why you feel the need to repeat it again
>or artistry of the house
again, this is just wrong. the first niche fragrances were judged by their art direction, and not because it was superior, but because it took a radically different approach to perfume releases from the mainstream. how is this so hard to get? it’s not all about money dude.
>they will know it is something that can likely be found most places fragrances are sold, have a very broad idea about how much it is likely to cost, and that it's likely made using industry standard ingredients.
and yet the latter 2 statements are patently untrue for even simple “designers” like mainline hermes, chanel and guerlain, who have access to far higher quality raw materials than any niche perfumer and also cost more due to deliberately restricted distribution designed to hamstring discounters. what use is a label like that if it doesnt even apply to a company as simple as chanel?
>If a person is told that a fragrance comes from a niche house, they will know they can expect to pay more for it, that it will be found in fewer retail locations and that it may or may not be crafted using more expensive ingredients.
the final statement is just outright wrong, niche brands have access to lesser quality and lower expensive raws than the big brands that have the power to buy in bulk. that’s not what makes the niche. what makes them niche is their power to curate unique raw ingredients in order to pursue a unique artistic direction that the big houses would never dare to. this is what made serge lutens so bloody rich when he ran shiseido’s perfume business and then split off when they tried to hold him back after nombre noir came out. there is nothing novel about the quality or cost of his materials, only how he used them, and he wasn’t even the perfumer, mind you.

>It is a simple and objective metric which has utility
considering your raw material metric was completely incorrect, no, it’s obviously not as simple or objective as you seem to think.
>Conversely, your definition is completely subjective gatekeeping
>If buy "the current fragrance community" you mean people whose opinions align with yours, you're just doing more gatekeeping
lmfao did you come from reddit or something? whining about gatekeeping because you’re being told that creed and pdm actually use shit raw materials and don’t really have the art direction to count as niche. you sound so whiny.
>If you go basenotes, fragrantica, reddit, facebook, youtube, telegram groups, etc. the vast majority of them are going to call Aventus a niche fragrance
well, they’re wrong. aventus is just a commercial mainstream fragrance released by a prestige brand. if it came out of any number of other designer houses who contract IFF (and specifically JCH), no one would seriously call it a niche fragrance. there is absolutely nothing about creed’s art direction that led to aventus being a perfume that was particularly unique or memorable, it was just a stroke of dumb luck. comparing that to l’artisan parfumeur and serge lutens essentially inventing new genres of perfumery in their heyday because all of them are brands with premium price points is fucking absurd.

>It's also completely redundant. If "niche" means a fragrance that is unique and artistic, just say that. We don't need a new term to further muddy the already convoluted water that constitutes the perfume business.
niche has always referred to a small business with an unusual artistic direction in the perfume industry. the confusion with creed stems from the fact that olivier creed got away with being a “master perfumer” for the better part of 3 decades. the revelation that all his perfumes were really just pierre bourdon rejects should prove that there is really absolutely nothing behind creed’s art direction, if they can be considered to have any at all.
>If we're going to define a niche brand as a fragrance house which makes unique and artistic fragrances, why couldn't that term apply to designer fragrances?
you reek of newfag. just admit you don’t know anything about perfume history and move on.
>What if (insert the name of whatever perfumer you think makes artsy and unique fragrances) goes and makes a unique and artsy fragrance for XYZ
not how it works. you don’t know how perfumer briefs work and how fragrance compounding companies are contracted for jobs. stop talking about things you don’t understand.
>Niche does not mean "whatever fragrance me and my very tasteful and sophisticated peers personally like the most"
again, repeating this stupid assumption that artistic = quality, when it’s already been asserted that le labo and dyptique are both unquestionably niche and also total dogshit. both of you belong together just for how fucking dense you both are, and also for how much you suck each other off. embarrassing.

>niche has always referred to a small business with an unusual artistic direction in the perfume industry.
Nope.
>Niche perfume is an alternative to mass perfume production. Niche is limited by the clientele and therefore with a limited sale range, thus the goal of niche houses is not to sell as much as possible.
>These companies are generally smaller than the major fragrance firms like Coty Inc., Puig, and Firmenich, but bigger than "indie perfume" lines that are generally owned and operated by the perfumer themselves. Especially since the 2010s, however, the distinction has blurred as more and more niche perfume brands have been purchased by a larger parent corporation.
"Unusual artistic direction" is completely subjective and is utterly pointless as a designation. If you want to refer to a fragrance as having some kind of "niche" smell because it's unusual, you are more than welcome to do so, but you're using it in a different way I can just as easily say your favorite uber original niche fragrance smells boring as fuck and could never be called niche by a person with olfactory receptors. And therein lies the entirety of the problem.
>you reek of newfag
I got into fragrances about a decade ago, but again, you default back to gatekeeping. It's your entire personality. It's so fucking cringe.
>not how it works
Yes, yes, you read The Ghost Perfumer a month ago. We are all deeply impressed and our pussies are moistened. But explain exactly why not. If Versace puts out a brief that says "hey, we're going hogwild. Just submit the most original and creative scent of your career, don't worry about cost and we'll see if we like it. Go right the fuck ahead" your entire point falls apart. Will they? Probably not. Doesn't matter

where do you think we are? this isn’t mathematics buddy.
>I can just as easily say your favorite uber original niche fragrance smells boring as fuck and could never be called niche by a person with olfactory receptors
you could, but if we were discussing something like, say, l’artisan’s timbuktu, there is already 2 decades of people who have smelled it and it’s well established to be a landmark of niche perfumery. if you don’t think it smells niche, the problem is you, not everyone else. simple as.
>If Versace puts out a brief that says "hey, we're going hogwild. Just submit the most original and creative scent of your career, don't worry about cost and we'll see if we like it. Go right the fuck ahead"
except they haven’t and won’t ever, so your hypothetical is meaningless. may as well talk about pigs flying.
>Fine, "Niche does not mean whatever fragrance me and my very tasteful and sophisticated peers think is unique"
sorry that you’re so painfully out of touch with the greater perfume community, but it’s never too late to join.
>>>18080905
it’s funny because that wikipedia article literally backs me up by confirming that l’artisan parfumeur was the first real niche brand, and i completely agree that le labo, aedes de venustas, frederic malle and arguably even jo malone count as niche brands. penhaligons is more of a heritage/legacy brand trying to market themselves as niche. only MFK doesn’t count as remotedly related. and regardless, it says nothing about the brands price point, ingredients, or their product lines, it only defines niche as perfume brands with limited distribution and a smaller audience. not contradictory with anything i’ve said.

It’s a trainable skill in the sense that most people don’t know how to dissect scents even though their noses could do it, but I dunno if we have proper research on how large human differences on base olfactory senses are. If we extrapolate it from how everything else works, it’s pretty safe to assume that Joe Regular can get pretty good if he just cares to put in the effort, then there’s the small portion of people who have naturally blasted ability to smell and then there are some that are naturally better at it. Can’t make your nose better in the purely biological sense, bu you sure as hell can learn to process its output better in your brain.

Also doesn’t make it any easier that anosmia is pretty hard to diagnose unless it gets super bad, and then there are some aromachemicals that different people smell very differently if at all. It’s a much more ”personal” experience than eyesight, and you could be missing something big without even realizing it.
