>but the marketing and the fact that every single facet of culture surrounding le male is gay guys and gay clubs.
I honestly don't really look at the marketing that much. I have been to the JPG website and looked at stuff there and I agree a lot of the pictures they choose come of as gay to me. But I kinda just assumed that is mainly because fragrance is a subset of fashion and the fashion industry as a whole is fairly gay.
>it’s just a gay guy perfume full stop, the way antaeus and kouros used to be 40 years ago.
I suspect the overwhelming majority of people who wear those scents are straight men. The fragrances might be big among gay guys, but that doesn't transform it into a SOLELY gay guy fragrance. I like that people can have a lot of options available to them for different scents. I see it as a positive that men wearing sweeter fragrances is more common now. But Le Beau and Le Male Le Parfum is about as sweet as I would go. But I also like things like Grey Flannel too.

Don’t even try to please this general. It’s mostly worthless shitflinging by autists who hate everything but their one chosen trad chypre, with some insightful posts in between. And that makes it a horrible place for beginner advice because you don’t know what to take seriously and what to disregard.

Seriously just trust your own nose, never blind buy (and preferably test many options before forking out cash), and consider what kind of social events you are going to use the fragrance for. That way you find something that suits you, perhaps so well that you don’t even want anything else, and if you feel the need to go deeper later on, then worry about it later.

There are fantastic perfumes to be had for very little in the forgotten corners of department stores and discounters. You would do well to heed his advice.

Most niche perfumes are not that complicated really, there's a lot of marketing nonsense and bad perfumes tarted up in fancy bottles. Just smell lots of stuff and learn what different things smell like. That's the only way. And make sure to smell (if not even wear) womens perfume, it's usually miles better than mens and most of the old chypres are fairly unisex at this point.

Generally speaking it’s pretty hard to fuck up as long as you don’t pick a too sweet fragrance to formal situations AND don’t overspray. Most of the embarrassing fragrance faux pas moments I’ve seen come from overspraying, it’s a much easier mistake to make than choosing an offensively wrong fragrance.

You can get away with pretty strong scents even in office environments if you spray lightly, but always be mindful how easy it is to go nose blind, and ignorance of nose blindness leads to people over/re-applying fragrance when they already reek of it. Seriously, if there’s something to worry about as a novice, it’s not really what you spray, it’s how much you spray.

In fact, perfume novice, two of the bottles in that maligned backrow would probably be right up your alley. They are both by Jeanne en Provence and can be had for very little: Neroli Intense and Acqua. NI is a cologne much in the vein of 4711 one of the all time classic citrus colognes. Acqua is a oceanic soapy rose, very close to one of the kenzos I forget which but very agreeable on a hot day.

The other JePs are mostly garbage and not worth bothering with.

To elaborate, CK One is not particularly sweet, it just opens with citrusy scent that has some vague floweriness and grassiness. Green notes generally refer to grass / leaf / foliage vibes. Then it is carried forward by scent that reminds you of soap and laundry musks, so if I try to make a picturesque description of it, imagine hanging fresh laundry outside on a summer day. Perfectly unisex.

Meanwhile, Acqua di Gio also opens with citrus, but there’s more herbal and sea-remniscent elements in it. It’s decidedly more masculine. But both of those are very safe beginner scents, hard to imagine that anyone could actively hate either of them.

Think about it practically: if you own only one or two fragrances, you want for them to be as flexible as possible. I don’t think that the opposite of a beginner fragrance is necessarily ”advanced” fragrance, more like specialized fragrance. Someone who has never owned perfume before *could* love a strong tobacco / leather / agarwood scent for example, but you probably don’t want to smell like that every day. Meanwhile, when you already have a collection, it’s not a problem if some scents are so specialized that you use them only for some specific situations.

It’s common for people on here to hate on them because it’s niche in general and the animal branding on top of that (personally I think it’s well done, the branding).

Without having actually smelled anything by them yet, I’m guessing they’ll be -exactly- like ELDO where there are a handful (3-4) very good to good fragrances, a bunch of super mid stuff, and several shitters. It’s the way of almost every niche house.

>ultra dogshit fake AdG from shartmart for $7.99 got more compliments in 2 weeks than all my other frags combined for years
the absolute state of normies. I will admit I probably sprayed this cheapie way more because it was so cheap and didn't last long, so maybe just spraying a shit ton is the key.

I'm not actually chasing compliments, of course. I usually just wear shit for myself to suit my mood but I figured maybe I should get something that normal people will find pleasant that I can just put on without thinking instead of my autistic old man scents.

I dropped the cheap bottle on accident and it shattered, but considering the price and the fact that people actually thought it was AdG, I think I'll get the same one or another cheap ripoff scent for my gym bag and stuff.

Nose blind to ISO e super, keep up darling. It's a common thing and in any case the inky vetiver is the interesting thing about encre noire. Speaking of, OP encore noire is a very cheap and good (don't know why this enraged freak speaking to me is so against things being cheap and good but whatever...) way to dip your toe into more challenging perfume.

Powdery typically means smells like women's cosmetics, as in "in going to powder my nose". Once you've smelled a powdery perfume it's really distinctive.

Luca turin himself in the guide says one should have some cheap trivial perfumes to spray about and play with. It's important to remember that perfume is meant to be fun, a lesson that many in this thread have forgotten. The JeP neroli intense smells almost identical to 4711 and lasts just a little bit longer. This salty moron (who if we are being honest is probably the brownoid aventus coomer based on how hes reacting like a rat exposed to dazzling light at the mere mention of the high IQ poster) couldn't possibly understand someone playfully covering themselves with Irisch moos or Kolonya as I doubt they have much of a culture of bathing where he comes from.

I was having a hard time finding something I enjoyed that didn’t get too sweet in the dry down. BDC Parfum started out promising, but after working on a bottle for about a year and a half, the iso/amber/tonka/sandalwood base is somehow even sweeter. Dior Homme sport 2021 opens with the relatively dry citrus aldehydes, but quickly goes full incense on my skin and then turns into a molasses/nougat amber. DH2020 is the only thing I’ve found that hits a perfect balance, a heavy iso-E and musk backbone with none of this artificial sweetness, without being completely grandpa bone-dry.
