That or the Montreal/Albatross.
Same earlier when they used Accutron movements for a bit because they were the most accurate on the market. No matter how butthurt it made them to have to say they used Bulova movements. They really were comitted to "muh accuracy"
Especially when everyone had stopped caringhonestly though, the saddest part is that now they will not release anything unless it can fit into one of their three collections. Anything else (that isn't Olympics-related) can fuck off. It's a small miracle that they still keep the Railmaster on life support.
And it's not going to change unless the Swatch Group decides to completely change its strategy. Which it won't because every new super duper limited edition of the Speedmaster sells well. Or at least it sells well enough.

"Suggest a watch for me."
I don't know shit about watches. My current watch is a Timex Expedition I purchased for $40 about 10 years ago. My wardrobe has moved up since then, mostly /tip/ influenced, and I think I need to step up my watch game as well. My date square is also broken, permanently stuck at 27.

>Your budget
$300 maybe, unless they're is some super must have or value beyond that point.
>Watch type, e.g. dress, diver, pilot
I like the basic style of the expedition. Diver watches are too bulky, pilot watches are too cluttered, and dress watches are too gaudy.
>Movement, e.g. automatic, hand-wound, quartz
I'm not sure about this. While I know Quartz is worry free for the most part, an automatic with the pendulum thing sounds nice. Hand-wound sounds too involved for my tastes.
>Desired features, e.g. water resistance, day/date, 2nd-time zone
Maybe a stopwatch feature would be nice, but besides that I'm not sure.
>Preferred strap option, e.g. leather, nylon, bracelet
Definitely not bracelet.
>Wrist size or desired watch size
6.6", I think 40mm looks good.

So far I have looked at the timex expedition north, there is a version with a titanium housing and some sapphire glass. Are those features useful? I don't know. My watch now has some gouges on the glass face, and dings on the case, I am uncertain how much value you get from the higher quality materials. Have also looked at the Hamilton khaki and Seiko 5.

Not even close.Lemania was folded into Breguet something like 20 years ago and has been making the Moonwatch movements ever since then. ETA is making the co axial movements for the other Omega watches. Not sure what you would even consider in house in this context. Omega making Omega movements in their workshops? They don't do that. No one buys a GS at retail, though. Walk into a boutique and they offer you at least 25% off without you even asking.
They depreciate horribly in part because they’re so overpriced.

The best value is buying a GS used that someone bought and decided a week later he hated. Close to 50% off retail there.

>longpost is looooong
It's all going to depend on what exactly is meant by "hand-made". You cannot have a fully hand-made watch since jewels cannot be hand-made. They used to and they were shit when they were polished by hand.
So exactly what machines will be allowed? Is a motorized lathe allowed? A column drill? A milling implement on the lathe? All these will increase the cost of operations at first but they save so much time that you'll pay for them faster than you'd think.
The next question is how many parts do you allow yourself to outsource? Jewels are already mandatory, but hairspring and mainspring could help too since they require some very specialized gear you won't use for much else and the failiure rate during production is very high. Not to mention, factory-made springs will have much better materials than anything you could work on by hand. Especially for mainsprings, you are far better off using something factory-made and building your own barrel to house it. Your own mainspring with shitty geometry, uneven texture and tension will not be as good, it just won't. And that's if you can even make it yourself. I don't know how to.

cont.
As for decoration, it's not actually as complex or time-consuming and therefore expensive as many brands would like you to think. It just comes with the risk of ruining parts at the last stage of construction. But if you know what you're doing, you can easily get your movement fully decorated to Geneva Stamp standards by just doing some perlage and cotes. The real trouble begins when you do anglage/beveling by hand (very easy to overshoot and mess up, or to do unevenly) or do hand-engraving.
Another huge factor is exactly what movement you will make. Are you copying from schematics in the public domain? Are you reverse-engineering an old movement? Are you starting from scratch? Needless to say, any amount of engineering you need to do has to factor into the total cost.
I guess I'll gradually be able to give you a better answer : I'm working on a complication module with a jeweler buddy so we can try and build a few watches with a 6498 (or a chinese clone because Swatch are dicks and won't sell to anyone anymore so suppliers are sitting on stock they can't renew) and see how it goes.

It does have amazing hands and markers finishing at that price point and it hits way above its price class. The focus on GS is on the dial. If Dial is important to you, then it is the best brand you can buy for that money. The rest of the watch is just mediocre with the exception of the black polishing, which is also very rare to see at sub 5 digits.
You decide for yourself.

It's mostly here so when repair time comes and something is wrong with the hairspring, third-party watchmakers can't do anything and have to send the watch back to the maker's repair center or beg (and pay) for a repair accreditation. Solidity and anti-magnetic properties have nothing to do with it.
>I want solid caseback anti magnetic watches back
You already have them, it's pretty much any watch with a solid caseback. Most watching have some sort of soft-iron casing circle to deal with magnetism and protect the movement.
It's cool to have solid casebacks though. I like engravement space in casebacks.

that's because stainless steel has higher thermal conductivity. I do like the coolness but at the same time i like that my titanium watch always feels around the same temperature. If the price is cheap enough and/or the vendor has a return policy, then there's no risk.
If you know the diameter, lug-to-lug, and lug width, you can usually mock up something with a piece of paper and see how it fits on your wrist.
For myself, though, I would never buy anything I've not tried on. You can never quite tell how something will fit just based on the meansurements.

Lug-to-lug is a funny measurement because it does not take into consideration whether the lugs curve down.

Breguet, for example, tend to have long L2L measurements for their case size, but the lugs angle down to hug the wrist. Nomos, on the other hand, also have long L2L measurements for their case size, but the lugs jut straight out from the case.

Still need a steel sports watch from a "Holy Trinity" maker? Say no more.

It's the same reason that the Girard Perregaux Laureato is as expensive as it is these days, or why the steel Piaget Polo exists at all.

The funniest part is that the Overseas isn't some 1970s design that just happened to be timeless. It's a 1990s design that's gone through a number of revisions. VC tried a couple times to make a luxury sports watch. The Overseas' current hype is entirely because of the Royal Oak's and Nautilus' unavailability.

I fucking love the concept of an accessible mechanical watch, that's not only robust, but cheap and reliable. Special kudos for the Prospex line (Alpinist rules).
>Moser
I feel like it's the perfect brand for richfags anons. The craftsmanship is superb, the designs are beautiful, and it's not overly hyped, making it somewhat of an underdog.
>Pre-Ritchmont JLC and ALS, Minerva, Eterna and Universal Geneve
I don't have a lot to say about those ones, but they all made wonderful movements and watches. Each one of them with their own design language and porpuse. I feel like they are all criminaly underrated.
>Rolex
Rich history, iconic designs, fair retail prices. What's more to like?
>Tudor
Poor man's Rolex, but I find that awesome. I don’t even own one, but if I had to choose between a Sub and a Pelagos/BB, I would probably go for the latter. The role idea behind a tool watch is being used in the field/to get work done, so as it’s much more likely to do that with a Tudor than a Rolex, what’s the point of choosing a Rolex? Of course I can appreciate its beauty (and I do appreciate it), but for a tool watch, I’m with Tudor all the way.

TBQH Tudor is pretty poorly finished for the price. Rolex on the other hand MSRP wise is pretty reasonable. The AD bullshit is pretty retarded though.

>> No.18072321

>>18072318
Is it? I've only seen one in real life once at an AD. It looked alright to me. Like, for the same price of course I would buy a SuperOcean, but I think Tudor's design is more iconic. I already have a Sub, so it doesn't make sense to buy another "sub-like" diver at the same price as a SuperOcean.

>> No.18072322

>>18072321
To be clear: I hadn't bought the Sub, it was from my father.

I just realized Tudor and Grand Seiko are literally polar opposites. Tudor has great designs but poor finishing, and Grand Seiko has great finishing but poor designs.

Honestly I prefer vintage Rolexes, like give me a vintage Pepsi where the bezel isn’t fucked with and I’d be happy for life. For a modern watch I don’t want any of the big 3 or holy trinity, I would be happy with GS Spring Drive if you don’t lose 60% of it’s value walking out of the AD. Or have to worry about parts availability on used watches seeing that Seiko seems to not stock parts(Arturo/Kinetic owners are fucked even though the Kinetic eventually evolved into the SD) when watches get discontinued.

>> No.18072328

>>18072325
Yeah, but a SuperOcean is a great alternative. It looks fucking awesome, the price is ok and it's really well-finished.

If something like a Pelagos 39 was 2.5k I think it would be a good value. You open that shit up and the movement looks worst than a fucking ETA or Stella you’d find in an Invicta. The display caseback on the 925 is almost laughable. 5k OTD is utterly ridiculous for a Titanium Grade 2 watch especially when a $300 Citizen solar perpetual calendar moon phase uses Grade 5.

Only issue for me is I don’t like how it looks, it’s just not for me. If I hit the loot the VC I want would probably be the Jumbo(38mm) 222. And I complain about Rolex a lot but I still put my name down at every AD(Daytona 126500/Batgirl impossible or Batman-might be possible)I've come across and come running if they call my name.

I actually wanted GS because Whoretadello was shilling it so much but now that I’ve become a sex tourist myself and saw one in Thailand in real life I kinda no longer want one. The finishing is great and it’s pretty shiny, but the proportion is all wrong. And unlike Rolex there seems to be two level of finishing, the watch is finished pretty well but the band seems to be a lesser grade of finishing.

What are Tudor's "great designs?" Every notable watch they have is a cope of a rolex with worse dimensions and hands.

I have it, it's pretty amazing for 35, but it's not all perfect
>the bracelet is shit, though for 35 for the whole package you get a fully solid bracelet with just the top of the clasp stamped
>one of the bracelet screws didn't have enough of a cut for screwdriver to work, the links also grate and stick one to another, tolerances are all over the place
>screw down crown that doesn't feel nice to screw/unscrew
>the movement is nice to look in action, but comparing how the time setting works on this and on a mechanical really shows the difference how shitty quartz movements are actually made (turning the crown feels out of sync on how the hands move)
it's a shitter, but put it on a slightly modified nato and you have yourself a good summer beater

oh yeah, the case finishing is great, has bevels and shit, not slabsided like some fucking tudor for 5k
lume is non existant, could have just used lumeless hands like on the original cocktail times

Eterna might be the biggest shame of them all and it's all because Swatch offered them a big enough amount for ETA, they only saw the short-term benefits.
It would also help if their designer hiring process wasn't like
>alright tell us : how would you design a new watch
>I'm not sure I would, that sounds like a lot of effort
>welcome aboard, now try to think of a new shade of white for our dials and no matter what happens do NOT open the "spherodrive" drawer
only they could have the ressources to make one of the most unique movement architectures of the 2000s and exclusively use it on two models with the least flattering and most dated design imaginable.
