Looking for a summer frag, here's the bottles I own so you can gauge my taste: Fahrenheit, Terre Dhermes, New York Intense Parfums de Nicolai, Tom Ford Tuscan Leather. I like Guerlain but own none.

Looking for a summer scent and I really enjoy CD Eau Sauvage (1966) but the performance is quite weak from my sample, and I'd like more than an hour or two of projection. Any recommendations for a summer frag: classic, gentleman, vintage citrus fragrance that has decent performance? Looking to buy new, performance ideally doesn't need to reapply once every 2-3 hours.

I'll be wearing with button down shirts, linen, loafers, boat shoes, madras, "Ivy League" if you will.

TLDR: classic, gentleman, citrus summer frags with decent performance, to wear while "dressed up"?

I sort of skimmed this video, but it's obvious this dude's knowledge is surface level. It's true that price =/= quality, but what he doesn't understand is that you are paying for the skill of the perfumer. The actual ingredients themselves are dirt-cheap. Also every modern perfume is regulated by IFRA, so his entire section about harmful ingredients is factually wrong.

Many older fragrances are kind of weird with their note listings (yes, Guerlain Vetiver isn’t that old, but in general). Dozens of notes listed, and while you can scope out some of them, it’s like you said, you can’t get any idea how the fragrance actually is from them.

Doesn’t make them bad fragrances, but for note listings, I generally like the more modern style with focus on the most important main notes, not everything someone could theoretically smell.

Yeah, I think the overall philosophy behind note breakdowns has changed. Used to be perfumers listed all but a few secret notes, but now consumers seem to associate simplicity with quality. It's kind of the fragrance equivalent of marketing foods as "all natural". Some modern releases literally only have two or three listed notes. There are obviously more notes than that, but it seems to be an effective marketing strategy.

Furyo, I had ridiculous luck with. Got my first bottle when it was in the $50 range, and loved it so much I got two backups (Which are probably $500 combined now). Horizon is dirt cheap I thought. It was only like six months ago I found it new without box on ebay. Given it was about $12-15ish, I guess it wouldn't be too too much even factoring in cost differences.

Aramis is weird insomuch it seems to hover from cheap to expensive every few months. I found mine a few years ago at a TJ MAXX for about $30.

Hi all - a few threads back I asked for recs for a very manly, unapologetic fragrance. Smoke, earth, spice, heavy, aggressive, natural, savoury. I got the following recommended:

Bowmakers, Antaeus, Yatagan, T-Rex, Capt. Fawcett's Baccy Booze, Fahrenheit, Quorum, GG Absolute, Iron Duke, Rien Intense Incense, Cuoium, Musc Ravageur, Azzaro Pour Homme, PR Pour Homme, Pour Monsieur, Sauvage Elixir.

Thanks for everyone's help - I should have also said I don't want it to be sophisticated or 'refined' at all. Does anyone want to vote which of the above they think fits the bill the best?

I've smelled samples so far of:

Yatagan - Good, like Kouros but more natural and less gay, still not strong enough for me
GG Absolute - Like it but the papery dryness makes it feel weak
Sauvage Elixir - The synthetic sweetness makes it hard to smell anything else and it feels childish

For example, Ombre Leather was only ”whoa, leather” to me initially, and I couldn’t have detected anything else from the note chart out of it no matter how hard I tried to do so, now I can actually dissect the floral and patchouli notes out of the whole. Also, recurring notes between different fragrances are much easier to note mentally, and it’s funny to spot some less obvious note similarities on yourself without reading about them beforehand.

To be clear, I’m not even gonna pretend that I’d be some kind of Luca Turin here, but I mean that the personal improvement has been massive. Before most fragrances were just a wall of scent, now I can appreciate the building blocks. It makes all more enjoyable, except for the fact that I get less and less enjoyment out of too linear fragrances, because they don’t have a development arc to appreciate.

The issue with Aventus is that it takes a few weeks from first spray to mature in the bottle. All fragrances get a little bit stronger with the introduction of air (before the air eventually degrades the scent) but for whatever reason, Aventus is especially sensitive to this.

That's annoying when you're spending an ungodly amount of money on a fragrance, but it is what it is. It's really only Aventus, too. I've never had this occur or heard of it occurring with other Creeds. There are so many alternatives to Aventus at this point that I don't see why people bother buying it, but if for some reason you must, this is what's happening. When you first buy it, wear it for a few days until the liquid level is about even with the neck of the bottle, then stash it away for a week and come back to it. You'll notice that it's much stronger.

i had a sample of it. i much prefer elixir because it doesn’t have iris. le parfum smells like a women’s makeup pencil, with the pencil shavings quality wood and lipsticky iris. it’s a nice fragrance in its own right but i think it smells dated like the early 2000s. it’s much more versatile though. you could easily wear it year round whereas elixir is for cooler weather and maybe summer evenings. i just can’t stand iris.

You mostly hear people talking about it with clone houses like Armaf, but I've also heard people say it about Le Labo and other made to order brands like Montagne . It very famously happened with the first batch of Sedley by Parfums de Marly, and the problem was so bad that the company actually came out and admitted it. I actually bought a 75ML of that batch of Sedley on Fragrancenet because it was selling for $50, and it behaved exactly like people described. First spray smelled like water with a dash of hand soap and I threw it in the dresser and forgot about it for a year, but now it lasts for, frankly, a ridiculous amount of time for a light fresh scent. I'm talking like 10+ hours.

All fragrances experience this to varying degrees, you just don't really notice it as much. As you add air to the bottle, the fragrance is going to get stronger. This is why people always complain about their new bottles smelling weaker than the bottle they just finished, even when reformulation is unlikely. It smells weaker because it is.

But Aventus is just a really strange composition all around. It seems to effect the olfactory receptors in a way most fragrances don't. It has the notorious olfactory fatigue issue, and people were talking about that even when it was considered a beast mode performer. People obviously hold it to a higher standard than most fragrances given it's status as le ebin best cologne ever and so you hear about the subtle variations more than you would with a less popular scent, but I do think that there is something that is unique to Aventus that just fucks with your nose more than most fragrances. Maybe things were fast and loose during the Creed era, but Blackrock acquired the house for Aventus alone. The first thing they'd do would be to lock down that formula and to ensure it's consistency.

By that do you mean people go noseblind blind to Creed Fragrances faster than others? I've honestly never smelled a Creed Fragrance, (meaning never knowingly sampled it or tested it.) Regarding all fragrances need some time to develop to full strength after first spray, how long is that usually? Like a few weeks, a few months or a whole year or more?

Someone gifted me the EDT a couple years later or so and it smelled (and still smells) completely different from how I remember it. It wasn't as peppery when I first tried it. Kinda sucks. Btw I tested both on my forearm, so it's not a paper strip/arm issue.

I don't hate it. The EDP used to be my signature scent. It was toward the beginning of my fragrance autism and now I have so many different things I can't see myself going back to it, but I vividly remember when I smelled it for the first time at Macy's. I was completely own away and remember thinking how itu was the first time I'd ever encountered a fragrance that smelled exactly like the ad campaign looked. It was around Christmas the year it was first released and that was the fragrance they were pushing hardest, so they had a bunch of stands with pictures of Johnny Depp in the desert at night with the sun setting. Something about the smell communicated that atmosphere really well.

My only complaint is that I got used to it pretty fast and it never smelled as vivid as it did that first time in the store. But it was still solid.

I have about 50 fragrances and I’d say 60% are designers ranging from the 70’s to being released last year. Niche can be great but they are so hit or miss that you have to sample shitloads of them. I’ve smelled some niche that are widely acclaimed and literary smell like pee. I’ll concede that I’m just not going to do the mental gymnastics to justify spending $300 on a bottle of pee like some of the autists you will meet.

anon fragrances are already a niche hobby/fashion pursuit. In the US only about 20% of men wear a fragrance. And most of these individual designer fragrances, not the whole house, make up a few percentage points of the scents worn. So if you wear something like Chanel Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme you will probably only smell like .5% of other guys. If you wear Bleu de Chanel you probably only smell like 1.5% of other guys. I could see your point if you smell like every third or fourth guy, but smelling like a 1 in a 100 or even less kind of guy is different enough for most people.

yes I own it. very divisive. Completely conceptual (vs. natural); notes online is 'alhehydes,' frankincense and amber. It's meant to smell like freshly steam-pressed clothes. This is bullshit

This smells like the vacuum of space where the Sun's rays burn all of emptiness forever. Black pepper and burned gunpowder followed by the astringent frankincense then after a while opening up to the thinnest note of vanilla. I can tell why the 60 year old women who shop at Dior gave it such a shit rating. This one requires a bit of courage to get into, and doesn't have a hint of sweetness.
