thoughts on Polo frags?

>> No.18066960

So I brought some fragrances over for my 14 year old nephew to smell for an "aromatherapy experiment", to see which he liked the most. My brother also contributed a couple of his fragrances. What he smelled were the following:
Polo Blue
Bleu de Chanel edp
Burberry London
Le Male Le Beau
Le Male Le Parfum
Burberry for Men
Crabtree and Evalyn Nomad
His 4 favorite were Bleu de Chanel, Le Beau, Le Male Le Parfum, and Burberry for Men. Of those 4 his 2 favorite that he felt he would like to wear were Bleu de Chanel and Le Beau. We gave him a sprays of each fragrance, one fragrance on each arm, so he could see how he likes them over the next several hours. At the initial spraying he preferred Bleu de Chanel.

Yeah, Elixir would be the best in the line theoretically (and the only Sauvage I personally find impressive), but it’s pretty hard to find the moment to wear it. EDT’s drydown is boring as fuck, Parfum disappears completely on my skin and leaves only a weak vanilla scent with some small Sauvage-y elements, so EDP is the best ”works pretty much” anywhere frag in the series. Wouldn’t call it my personal favorites of all time, but IMO it’s better than the fragrance hobbyist side tends to rate it.

Not that I don’t hate Sauvage overspraying teenagers etc., but realistically you aren’t gonna smell like them if you use EDP sensibly.

So I've heard back. My nephew likes Le Beau the best, so I will wind up ordering that for him. I'm planning on ordering straight from Jean Paul Gaultier's store so I will get 2 complimentary samples. I'm thinking of choosing 2 female ones to give to my 13 year niece. Which ones do you think she would prefer? She is kind of active and plays a lot of LaCrosse, but I know she for the past year or so has been really into things like bath bombs which tend to be very sweet smelling. I was thinking La Belle Le Parfum and maybe Scandal. Any other suggestions? They need to be available from the Jean Paul Gaultier Store.

Because people who watch youtube fragrance content are usually broke high school and college students, and for some reason instead of buying decent fragrances that are inexpensive, people getting into fragrance for the first time immediately want to buy clones of high end fragrances. That much is obvious. He has a very distinct personality. It's that of a person who is starting to get into fragrance, reads the same takes as everyone else who is just starting to get into fragrance, and then cranks up the contrarianism because he's a 4chan user.

You can always tell the new guys by their overzealousness. They've never smelled Aventus, but they've read a lot about it and will echo the sentiment of others at an amplified level to make it sound like their extremely strong opinion is based on experience, but they almost always overdo it. So instead of saying something like
>Aventus smells good, I understand why people like it, but it's not worth the inflated price and if you like that scent profile there are better performing options at cheaper price points
They say something like
>ONLY A FUCKING RETARDED IDIOT FAGGOT NOSELET WOULD EVER FUCKING BUY CREED! AVENTUS SMELLS LIKE PISS AND SHIT AND ALSO CAT PISS! I SPRAYED IT ON AND IT ONLY LASTED FOR 35 SECONDS, BUT IN THOSE 35 SECONDS MY DATE DUMPED A GALLON OF GASOLINE INTO HER NOSTRILS AND LIT IT ON FIRE TO GET RID OF THE HORRIBLE SMELL

>Designer: Fragrances that are typically produced by clothing brands (Dior, Chanel, Versace, Tom Ford, Giorgio Armani, etc) but can also be produced by anything from pen makers (Mont Blanc), Cigarette/Cigar makers (Dunhill, Davidoff) Jewelry makers (Van Cleef and Arpels), automotive manufactures (Ferrari, Mercedes Benz) and more. Typically have widespread availability and can be purchased at most major retailers like Macy's, Nordstrom, Sephora, etc. Generally retails anywhere from 60-199 USD, and older brands are often found at discount outlets like Perfumania and TJ Maxx
>Niche: Originally this meant fragrances produced by a standalone company who only exclusively produced fragrances (Serge Lutens, Montale, Mancera, Acqua di Parma, Creed, Parfums de Marly, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Nasamatto, etc) but, more often than not, people will use it to refer to anything that's more expensive and less widely available than typical designer fragrances. Designers often have a more exclusive line (Tom Ford Private Blend, Dior la Collection Privee, Armani/Prive) that is more expensive and slightly harder to find, and people will call these "niche" for some reason. Then you have houses like Guerlain which is a standalone fragrance company, but nobody ever seems to refer to them as a niche house.
>Indie: This is kind of what niche used to be. Standalone companies that only sell fragrance. There's also not really a specific price designation. Some indie houses sell modestly priced fragrances, other sell ridiculously priced fragrances. It's kind of all over the place.

tried my sample of bleu de chanel edp today.
wow i really love the top notes when it starts, very complex citrus and freshness and a tiny bit of fruity sweetness with just a hit of wood and amber under it all. sadly all this complexity fades away pretty quickly, in 30mins-1hour for me and you are left with just a nice base of the woody/patchouli/amber notes. still inoffensive and masculine but nothing that many other frags don't have already. the base longevity is still going strong after 6+ hours. i can see why it's popular, but the majority of the time you are wearing it, it will be a pretty basic woody scent. if it could keep the amazing complexity of the first hour for longer, i could see this being one of my favorite frags of all time, i loved it at the beginning.

>> No.18067463

>>18067456
Yeah I had a similar experience with my bottle. Though I like that the scent mellows out a bit. The opening smell is very powerful and invigorating, but after a half hour I kind of appreciate that it tones down a bit. The softer base notes feel more comfortable later in the scent's development.

ya the base notes are much more mellow as time goes on, which i'm ok with, it's just that the complexity drops as well. i wish at least a couple of the top or middle notes made it to the later phases, even if they are a bit more subdued.

Yeah despite that I think a lot of people like fragrance. Interestingly enough my nephew liked both Bleu de Chanel and Le Male Le Beau and initially preferred BDC. I told him to spray both on and then smell them a few hours later and see which he preferred and he switched to Le Beau. I wonder if it is because the the BDC lost some complexity. Le Beau isn't an overly layered fragrance but it does smell fairly similar to it's initial spray several hours later still.

i'm on a journey now to find something that has BdC DNA but lasts a little longer. nothing against BdC, it's fine if i want that simple basic manly wood smell for 8+ hours and not project like a pajeet, but looking for a longer lasting complex freshness for hot days. BdC i think would be better for cooler/colder days for me.

Hey all. Been a minute. Looking for a summer frag, here's the bottles I own so you can gauge my taste: Fahrenheit, Terre Dhermes, New York Intense Parfums de Nicolai, Tom Ford Tuscan Leather. I like Guerlain but own none.

Looking for a summer scent and I really enjoy CD Eau Sauvage (1966) but the performance is quite weak from my sample, and I'd like more than an hour or two of projection. Any recommendations for a summer frag: classic, gentleman, vintage citrus fragrance that has decent performance?

I'll be wearing with button down shirts, linen, loafers, boat shoes, madras, "Ivy League" if you will.

TLDR: classic, gentleman, citrus summer frags with decent performance, to wear while "dressed up"?

BDC EDP is a strange one for me. Whenever I wear it I feel like I'm not wearing fragrance. I can smell it on myself, it's performing just fine, but no one has ever commented on it either positively or negatively. Even when I've asked people directly they'll say something to the effect of "it's okay, but I like that other one you wear better". I'd simply chalk it up to being played out, but other painfully overplayed fragrances I've worn like Sauvage don't seem to have this effect.

Oh, gotcha. Well, I personally don't care for it (granted I bought it for myself and gave it away with one of the reasons being that it was too feminine to wear myself), but Mancera Instant Crush is pretty much the exact fragrance you're asking for. It's close enough to BR540 that people faously use it as an alternative, and it has a very pronounced vanilla in the base.

That being said, it's also polarizing. To me it comes across as synthetic and almost a bit medicinal, particularly in the dry down, but BR540 gets that complaint as well. If she like that specific scent profile, she'll probably like it a lot more than I did
