Possibly infinite options with that criteria. Eco Drive probably the right choice, Seiko has some nice looking simple radiowave+titanium+solar+sapphire but they look more modern.

Just avoid mineral glass if you actually want a daily watch

Looking at The Citizen's now. What's kinda off putting is the fact that they're designed such that adjusting the accuracy, which appears to be necessary despite Citizen's accuracy claims, at least with the cal. A060 is not possible in the traditional sense that HAQ has used since the 70's with the trimmer. Instead it needs to be plugged into some proprietary computer like a modern, aka shitty, car.
GS stick by the traditional way and seem to be more truthful with their accuracy claims.
I don't like the looks of any chrrent GS quartz though.

I've got a buddy with a Garmin watch and he loves it.

I've been turned off to smart watches since my Motorola 360. It was fine, I just don't want something else I need to remember to put on the charger every night.

Went the opposite way and got into automatic watches after that.

But if I was looking to get back into a smart watch I'd be looking at one of these.

Junghans quality is good. Construction is solid and the quartz movement it uses will be better than the average quartz mall watch you might get for a couple of hundred dollars.

A lot of snobs would tell you that paying $700 for a Junghans Quartz is not good value, but you need to understand that 99% of the people in this thread have never seen a vagina and the only one who has owns a Grand Seiko Spring Drive watch which is quartz.

Sorry, was at the gym. I mostly like this one because I do a lot of solo hiking and am fairly athletic. I only have to recharge it about once a month and it has a SOS option that texts my emergency contacts with my GPS location if I'm dying somewhere and it tracks my heart rate, VO2 max, etc.

I feel like it's the perfect middleground between a sports watch and a smart watch. If I turn off all of the stupid sensors and am out in the sun enough every day it will run indefinitely off of solar, or around 55 days with no sunlight. Still lasts about 1-3 weeks between charges if you're regularly using all of the shit.

I'm in the military and I beat the fuck out of my watches and have also worn it freediving in shallow-ish water. Maybe I'm just coping to justify spending $500 on a watch that doesn't look as cool as Casios, but meh.

My only complaint otherwise is that the auto backlight is way too sensitive. My old Casio Protrek was perfect and ONLY activated when I turned my wrist.

this guy is fantastic, he's like some sort of god: https://www.youtube.com/@watchrepairtutorials
this guy is less educational and more entertaining, but still wonderful: https://www.youtube.com/@VintageWatchServices

start with handwind mechanicals and master them first, save automatics for later

purchase something like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/234566613385 and number each compartment 1 to 24, then put in the watch parts as you disassemble the movement in order, makes tracking the order of things ultra easy, taking photographs

you only really need 1 good tweezer, look for a cheap used delmont no.2

get a set of bergeon screwdrivers, at least three, each in the 0.6mm, 1.2mm and 2.0mm tip size, dont cheap out here

get a chinese adjustable movement holder that looks like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bergeon-movement-holder-No-4040/dp/B077JY4LMD

my cleaning method is low price but takes me a long time, i have a bottle of hexane and a bottle of 99% ipa and these work for all cleaning, i simply pour in a bit of hexane into a shallow but wide jar and let a part sit for 5 mins, then i take a fine sable brush and while holding the part under the hexane with a tweezer 'paint' the part with the brush and this cleans it very well (MUST BE SABLE)

hexane is highly toxic and will leave you feeling heavy chested within seconds so you MUST wear a 3m mask for this (its a good thing to own anyway as you'd also use it for removing radium dust from dials and hands)

I will then move the part to a 3 jar IPA wash (you can skip this if you want to keep things simple and cheap) where I put the part into a small mesh basket then spin it around for 2 mins inside each jar (idea being the last jar has the cleanest amount of ipa and will chemically purge the part perfectly) the mesh basket then gets blasted with hot air from a hairdryer for a moment until nice and dry (simply air drying may not dry out all ipa hidden in nooks and crannies)

part 2
IMPORTANT! IPA will melt shellac (a glue used to hold most pallet jewels and balance wheel jewels) so, you do not want to use IPA to clean where shellac is located, instead these parts (the balance wheel and the pallet fork) should simply be dipped in hexane, you will want to remove and clean the capstones independently and I would watch @watchrepairtutorial video on this subject

cap stones can be a bit of a bitch to remove and you will need a good loupe and, i personally use a sewing needle to open up the incabloc shock resist spring (it is extremely fragile

get pegwood and peg out jewels before the cleaning, i forgot to mention lol, (This involves pointing a pegwood, dipping it in hexane, and then putting it into the hole of every jewel, and twist. This removes any debris from the inside of the jewel hole.(You shouldn't be applying enough pressure to pop the jewel out of the bridge. It's a very light amount of pressure needed, it's more of a twisting action than a pressing action)

the barrel is a different beast and requires its own pre-cleaning process, but i find that you can get away with opening, cleaning and closing it all without the use of special tools. if you are re-using the mainspring, after it is clean, it needs 8200 that is dropped into a tissue paper, that is folded around mainspring and pulled along it (automatics need an extra lubricant called braking grease)
barrel arbour - needs 4 points of oiling HP1300 (interior top shoulder, interior bottom shoulder, exterior top shoulder, exterior bottom shoulder)

>>18054446
yeah that and the fucked up battery thing and the way they talk to their customers were deal killers for me, I am glad I went with grand seiko. the citizen is a badass watch that I'd buy if I was swimming in scrooge mcduck money but I work for my neetbux and I want something I can be confident in

>> No.18054793

part 3

you can purchase 3 types of oil, the 8200, hp1300 and 9010

1st wheel mainspring barrel = high torque low speed (hp1300)
2nd wheel = high torque low speed (hp1300)
3rd wheel = high torque low speed (hp1300)
4th wheel escape wheel = low torque high speed (9010)
5th wheel balance wheel = low torque high speed (9010)

you will wanna clean oil pots and oiler nibs in ipa after a session
keyless works should be greased with something like molykote dx

important stuff you need:
caseback opener
finger cots
polywatch (only works on acrylic crystals)
hand presses
hand remover (theyre like a pair of tiny crowbars) (use clear plastic to protect dial when removing hands)

other stuff you might wanna buy:
cheap deamgnetiser
air puffer
rodico (i barely use this honestly)

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN OLD EBAY WATCHES
try and find some with photos of movement, this will help a lot
you can usually figure out a movement by seeing if there is any written information on the movement, if not, by googling the brand on the dial of the watch, and then going through pictures of movements this brand used until you spot a match, from there you can find things like service manuals or more modern service walkthroughs
avoid anything that looks like it has a misshapen hairspring (this is fixable, but it's bloody difficult) to start with just stick to sub 40$ auctions

also, a cigar box with a craft cutting board put in the bottom

the box keeps things that might fly off from your tweezers like click springs or tiny screws, these parts hit the walls of the box 80% of the time and you're saved a few hours crawling on your knees trying to find them

the cutting board is just a clean surface, gets an ipa wash between each project to sterilise

From my personal experience, a 6000$ Tudor is the superior watch to a 6000$ Rolex. Because you don't pay much for the brand, unlike with rolex. Both are verg overpriced for what they offer, though the master chronometer movements are stunningly accurate, I must admit.
I am autistic enough to spend many hours looking at the dial and case finishing using a macro lense. That's what I mean by "experience".

Disagree. Swatch has no clue what to do with its brands.

Case in point: the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. How difficult would it be to make a non-limited edition in the original's size?

Longines? Let's abandon everything that made the company great and try to sell watches whose brand name starts with an 'L' to Asians, who are functionally incapable of saying "Longines".

Omega? God, where to start?
>I know, let's make another fifty Speedmaster limited editions
>Remember those old pie-pan Connies? No one liked those, right?
>Hmm...that's a good design, but could you make it a little thicker? Also, ditch that microadjust on the bracelet. No one wants that.
>Guys, guys, guys! I just had a brilliant idea: Speedmaster...but plastic!!

Richemont, on the other hand, does not exercise enough control over their brands, so half the time they're making stupid decisions and end up directly competing with one another across price segments.

>What were they supposed to write on the dial
Anything but "Piaget".
Piaget became popular for their small and superthin dress watches in precious metal, stone dials and unusual funky shapes. Pic related.
Why they decided to make a stainless steel sports watch is a mystery to me. It could have been an IWC, JLC, Baume & Mercier or whatever... It's utterly ugly and soulless. That watch isn't even popular by the way.

It's pretty much the same for JLC. Designs are so random and all over the place. There's no effort of coming up with a brand identity and a cohesive design language.
Also massive price increase, dinner plate sized shitters, and shit-tier brand ambassador.

tl;dr: Richemont is turning centuries old watch brands into fashion brands.

It's a mystery why they decided to make the most popular type of watch in the market today? You're memeing right?

At slightly over 11mm thick it's still really thin for a chronograph. Seems pretty in line with the brand identity to me. The only thing missing from your qualifications is precious metal, which only wouldn't make sense on a sports watch. Also they do have a rose gold version if you really want it and it'll still be as thin as most other "dress watches."

The price increases were ridiculous, no argument there. It was known that JLCs were undervalued for a while, but they definitely swung too hard in the other direction and are now overpriced

Their sizes are in-line with the market. They're bigger than I'd like, but it's not 1967 anymore, either. 40mm is an OK size for a man with a 7" wrist to wear. To their credit, they do make the Reverso in a number of sizes.

I don't think any reasonable person really cares about brand ambassadors.

>It's pretty much the same for JLC. Designs are so random and all over the place. There's no effort of coming up with a brand identity and a cohesive design language.
This is actually way off the mark. For a company that produces as many references as they do, their collections are remarkably coherent and still tied to historical references.

The Reverso and the Polaris are their own things, of course, but you can easily tell how the Duometre, Master Control, and Master Ultra Thin cases are related. The Ultra Thins have dart indices all around on their dials, the MCs have 12-3-6-9s. They have the same style alpha hands, but the UTs' hands are thinner. They are consistent in their use of blue accents etc.

You can easily spot a JLC from across the room if you know anything about watches.

I've been lucky; it's the same spec as it was when I first got it (i.e. nothing has changed). I set it either on my birthday or on New Years Eve, and only adjust the hour for DST (it has an independent-set hour hand for the first pull-out position of the crown). I really love that watch; the design is perfect.

What are you wearing today, Fren?

>>18055286
NICE! Don't often see these on the threads, or maybe I have just been away too long. Is it running okay? You have a very clean example.

>>18055337
I like the variety that I can get with all of these conglomerates. It's not that every design is a winner, but that at least we have something to choose from that is not limited to the heavy hitters all the time. There was a time when the only way to know what was out was to get a catalogue from the manufacturer, and even then there was no certainty that you could get the watch you want. Now we have so many manufacturers competing hard for your money, so there's a lot of 'playing it safe' with designs as well as 'taking a risk'. We live in a remarkable time for watches, because there really is something for everyone. Anyway, that's how I see it.

The other day I tried on the BlancpainXSwatch in person....it feels as light as the MoonSwatch. Fun stuff, but it cemented the fact that the fifty-fathoms general design looks awful on my wrist.

It runs well. +-2/3s a day, I think (never did a proper check). It's mostly on the + side, although that could be because I've worn it quite frequently, kept it wound constantly. It's a solid watch. Which one? Mine? Stiletto? Tha Citizen? If it's the 0100 originals, there are still a few out there (though the Mother-of-pearl dials are essentially all gone and the gold versions are far too expensive for a quartz watch, even in my book). Agreed; the condition of your dial is really wonderful (every numeral is sharp, the edges are all crisp and there is no damage). My Waltham has a crack on the dial (got it that way), but these things happen. Your pocket watch is far more interesting though; my Waltham was mass-produced, and though it's a slight oddity (24 hour 'Canadian' dial on a side-winder movement configuration), it will never be as rare or unique as that pocket watch you have there.

I hope the restoration goes well and smooth, and that it keeps good time!

What about this? I saw a lot of people bitching about the 54 not hving a "riveted" bracelet (no clue what they mean) but this one apparently does. Is this watch better or worse? Also is it accurate? Why does it have no chronometre but a sub300 buck armani watch does btw?

The riveted bracelet is that ugly shit you see on the side of the bracelet of your image.
Also that's just a cope watch

You can wear it every day for the rest of your life and it will be fine.
If you break it or it malfunctions, take it in for service. Easy as that.

If you hold the two watches side by side, you'll notice that the 54 is not that much smaller than the 58, but is more comfortable and much better put together.

The 58 has a shittier crown tube and shittier clasp.

Omega watches are pretty sometimes. Whenever I'm thinking of buying one, my autism won't let me look past the swatch-thing. I don't know why.
Is it true that they are very secretive about where each part is made in and assembled? Are there any videos/mini docus where they show you around on how they build their watches like the vid with teddy at Glasshütte Original?

I think its insane there are watches over 1000 euros that dont tell the date or the time in 24h format. This is now holding me back from buying tudor bb54. My 300buck armani watch does tell the date and 24 hour format time on a separate dial
