Got L’Instant de Guerlain EDT today, it’s really growing on me despite the initial experience differing from expectations. The beginning of it is kind of a mess with citrus and anise bitterness, but I like how it develops into tea / patchouli / subtle cocoa later on while having a classical-style French edge yet still feeling modern enough. EDP is apparently the one everyone praises, but got EDT because it shouls be more season-versatile and I already have my share of winter scents.

Also, everyone obviously knows how testing strips don’t tell the whole truth, but holy fuck does thst apply to LIDG. On paper, it never properly develops but instead remains a strange pissy scent that I certaintly wouldn’t use, but thank god it is so very different on skin.

>EDP is apparently the one everyone praises, but got EDT because it shouls be more season-versatile and I already have my share of winter scents.

I think people reflextively praise the EdP because they haven't tried both and just assume "EdP = performance". The EdP doesn't actually last much longer than the EdT.
The EdT is also the much more balanced of the two. The EdP turns kind of syrupy after the opening. And the lemon in the opening makes the EdT much brighter.

Okay, so here's all the steps you should take if you're new to Fragcom and are considering Aventus
>Buy CDNI
>Buy Cedrat Boise
>Buy Montblanc Explorer
>Buy Pineapple Vintage
>Buy another bottle of CDNI because you didn't like it the first time but realized there are different kinds
>Buy a lipstick atomizer filled with Aventus from Fragrancenet
>Spray Aventus and its clones on different spots on your arm and smell them all to see if they're close enough
>Realize you don't really like Aventus that much
>Buy other niche fragrances that are more interesting
>Have a nagging feeling in the back of your mind every six months that you're missing out because you still don't have Aventus
>Go to fragrencenet and put a tester bottle in your cart
>Proceed to check out
>Realize that even at the discounted price it's still a lot of money to be spending on a fragrance that you have 72 clones of
>Spray all the clones on again and obsessively compare them all to your lipstick atomizer to see if they're close enough
>You don't really know. They kind of all smell different
>Say fuck it and buy another Creed instead
>Repeat this process once every six months until you own all the Creeds except Aventus
>Start stressing out because you can't feel complete until you own Aventus
>Say fuck it and buy Aventus
>Be disappointed because, unlike your lipstick atomizer which evidently came from some special snowflake batch, the full bottle you bought smells just like the clones
>Wonder if you got a fake
>Start researching Aventus batches
>Nagging feeling that even though you finally bought Aventus, you still don't own the REAL Aventus because you got a shitty batch

>worse batch consistency.
That's surprising to be honest. I thought for sure the buyout would at least solve the batch consistency issue. Everyone was convinced the new owners would come in and start streamlining everything and using cheaper ingredients. I expected the overall quality to go down but the consistency to go up.

And I still would love to know why the fuck Aventus is so inconsistent to begin with. It makes no sense. None of the clones have that problem, and neither do the other Creeds for the most part. CDNI has the silver cap and black cap thing, but those are made in two different countries and are likely slightly different formulations based on the needs of the individual markets. They're different when compared to each other, but they're consistent in and of themselves. And I've seen people complain about a little bit about performance decreasing over time with other Creeds, but people say that about everything. You never really hear people talking about different batches of Silver Mountain Water smelling like an altogether different fragrance. And you'd think that Aventus is the brand's most popular fragrance by leaps and bounds, they would have figured out a way to keep it consistent. It's all very weird.

>> No.18055195

>>18055191
I feel like Olivier Creed is probably some kind of schizo. The jig is up, everybody knows the brand history is a lie and that he used other perfumers to come up with pretty much everything. If you're already lying, why not just drop the pretense of the whole "muh secret maceration method is why Aventus smells different every time" and just start using the same ingredients as the clones while still telling everyone it's magical whale jizz and 50 tons of the finest pineapples in Hawaii?

If you're gonna lie then go all out. But he doesn't do that. Instead he does something much more stupid and pointless and I bet it's because he's a crazy person.

>> No.18055207

>>18055195
It irks me how shitty Creed is as a company, because I genuinely love Green Irish Tweed and Aventus (yeah, yeah, it has been overused and cloned to hell and back, it’s still great), but all those straight up lies, bad consistency especially considering the schizo pricing etc. make it so that it feels bad to give any money to them.

And yeah, I know that big luxury brands aren’t exactly ethical companies either, but at least they just peddle images of luxury in their ads instead of straight up lying.

The anon who wrote about Sauvage Elixir radiating comically far from a testing strip here, can confirm that it’s just as silly on skin. One feeble spray from a tester atomizer and it smells like I’m doused in perfume. It’s an interesting modernization of older darker fougeres, much more interesting than other Sauvages in the lineup, but realistically, I can’t see myself using this but in extremely rare cases and probably even the sample will last for a year.

I got these samples and have been demoing them. So far the Ambre Sultan and Carnal Flower are the standouts.
Props to Black Afgano though, it's extremely interesting. I had two people comment on the scent. The only issue was the comments weren't necessarily positive. Both people said they couldn't identify the scent.

The rest are honestly good but don't really hold up or stand out. Jasmine Et Cigarette is excellent but fades FAST. I could be overloading myself,
but I'm mostly nose blind to Reflection man Tam Dao and Blanche.

Is buying Carnal Flower from eBay a mistake? Are knock offs of niche scents common?

Has anybody had experience with different batches of this smelling different? I know Maai had a pretty drastic change in its formula, but I just bought a second bottle from Luckyscent that smells much different than one I bought off Ebay.
I don't doubt the one I got off Ebay is real, the musk is very good quality. But it's a musky lavender that gets really minty and green. The one from Luckyscent is an indole/musk bomb all the way through with fat doses of ylang ylang and champaca I don't get from the Ebay bottle.

>And I still would love to know why the fuck Aventus is so inconsistent to begin with.
So apparently Creed owns a captive molecule that only they can use. It's unlisted in the note breakdown, it's a specific type of musk and people seem to think it's only found in Aventus. I don't know nearly enough about chemistry to say what's actually going on, but it seems like whatever it is, it is linked to the captive molecule.

The ghost perfumer behind Aventus is, allegedly, Jean-Christophe Herault, who was a protege of Creed's longtime ghost perfumer (who they completely and predictably fucked over) Pierre Bourdon. Herault created 1934 for Canali, which has a very similar note breakdown to Aventus and the major difference is it lacks the musk compound mentioned earlier. Bourdon also seemed to have an obsession with pineapple as a note, which he amped up in a reformulation of Drakkar Noir and includes as a secret note in a lot of different compositions he's created.

The real story behind Creed is that Olivier would go around to different houses and sample rejected fragrances commissioned by these houses composed by different perfumers. The way it works in designer houses is the creative director will put out a concept for a new fragrance and individual perfumers will come up with something that fits the bill, and the house will choose which one they like best. Olivier Creed contacted perfumers who made formulas that were rejected, and he ended up working almost exclusively with Pierre Bourdon from the 80s-00s. He also paid Pierre Bourdon exactly three tailored suits for his work and promised a payout when he retired and, unsurprisingly fucked him over and never gave the man a dime.

Olivier Creed is basically the Bob Kane of perfumery. I don't particularly care about the fraudulent backstory, that's just marketing bullshit which ultimately makes no difference, but fucking over Bourdon was fucked.

>The real story behind Creed is that Olivier would go around to different houses and sample rejected fragrances commissioned by these houses composed by different perfumers
This is also the reason Creed has so many random fragrances that smell weirdly like other fragrances. A lot of these formulas were tweaked slightly and sold elsewhere. It's why GIT smells so much like Cool Water, Original Santal smells like Joop/Mont Blanc Individuel, etc. You can also see the concept in some of the other popular Creed entries. For instance, Silver Mountain Water was originally composed as an entry for Issey Miyake, which makes sense. It doesn't smell particularly similar to any specific Miyake fragrance, but it is a weirdly Japanese fragrance that happens to be made by a French perfumer.

It sure wasn't. It was a formulation Bourdon pitched to just about every fashion house in the world until finally landing on Davidoff, who decided to make it their first fragrance. Creed was so incredibly niche at the time of its creation that no one would have known or cared about making a cheaper alternative to Green Irish Tweed, because 99.99% of the market had no idea Creed existed. Every element of their house story is a lie.

Cool Water is an interesting story. It's one of the all time classic designer fragrances and remains pretty relevant 35 years later, but literally nobody wanted it. The fact that Davidoff, a relatively obscure Swiss cigar company happened to want to expand into fragrance at the right time is the only reason it even made it to market.

It's like the story of how Satoshi Taijiri went around to every toy shop in Japan and the US pitching Pokemon and getting rejected from all but a fledgling startup now known as Nintendo that I just made up and didn't happen. I'm just trying to follow in Creed's footsteps.

yeah I could understand if people were selling $15, bottles, because then it is a bigger percent of the total sale, but $100 plus for a bottle, you need to sell thousands of bottles to make up for one lost sale of a person who didn't want to buy because they felt the atomizer was too cheap.

There's something in this I find revolting and I have no idea what it is. And I don't mean it's just not my taste, there are plenty of fragrance I don't care for, but I wouldn't say they were actually off putting. This is the only time in my life where I smelled a fragrance and could not imagine how anyone could possibly like it. It's not like Joop or Sauvage or other fragrances I wouldn't buy but can understand the appeal of, it's offensive to me in the way that BO or piss is offensive.

And I'm sure it's just me. It's a very popular fragrance and if everyone was smelling what I was smelling that would be impossible. I think it's like how for a small percentage of people, cilantro tastes like soap. I feel like there's got to be something in here that I'm having some kind of reaction to.

Does this smell horrifically, unbearably bad to anyone else and if so has this ever happened to you with another fragrance? Also, if you like this frag I'm not trying to shit on your tastes. I think my brain is just broken

You just think your thousand dollar meme water smells better than the junk at TJ Maxx because you paid a lot of money for it but it's all the same.

Just buy the 75ml directly from the PdM website and pay with Klarna or afterpay. It's only $260, which honestly isn't a far cry from what you will find it for at reputable discounters. If you do the bi-weekly payment plan it comes out to about 36 dollars a week. over the course of two months. It's pretty doable.

And as someone who owns Layton, you really don't need the full sized bottle. It's not going to be something you wear every day. It smells great but it's way too loud to wear to work and you'll probably be reaching for something else in the summer time because it is very sweet. It's a bit like Eros or 1 Million. It doesn't smell anything like either of them, but it's definitely a high end entry into that genre of fragrances. It's great for going out and grabbing attention, it's one of my most complimented fragrances, but it's not versatile enough to be an all day every day scent.

Arcade Fire's Will Butler on what David Bowie smelled like
>You walk into a room, and you're like, “Something's different. I'm in a different dimension. It smells so good in here!” [And then you realize] “Oh, David Bowie's here.”
It smelled like if an ancient pine forest had a massive forest fire -- but like, a month ago. So you get the new growth of the grass and the moisture, but still there's an undercurrent of pain. But also of smoke, so kind of like marshmallows...? It's powerful.
I have been trying to figure out what this dipshit was talking about since 2016. I think about it all the time. The burned wood smoke and marshmallows makes me think it's By the Fireplace.

I have no idea what year the interview happened and I've only seen it mentioned on frag boards, but people started talking about it in 2015, which was the year BtF was released. It doesn't really feel like a Bowie kind of a fragrance, but neither does Silver Mountain Water and some other Arcade Fire douche bag said he wore that once when they went to dinner. And famous people get sent free shit all the time. I can't really picture David fucking Bowie going to Sephora to pick up a Sephora-exclusive fragrance, but maybe they sent it to him and he decided to wear it that day.

I figure the chestnuts and guiac wood is where the forest part comes from, the Juniper and orange blossom are the green notes and the vanilla is the marshmallows. But I also don't really buy that this dude would be able to give such a weirdly accurate note breakdown based on being in a room with Bowie once, so it's probably coincidence

Layton owner seconding here, it’s strong as fuck, even one spray carries you far. 125ml is a overkill, you’d get mileage for years of daily use with that and you’re probably not gonna daily it realistically.

That being said, it’s an excellent fragrance in its own genre and if you like apple and vanilla, it’s an easy recommendation.

Also, adding to this, TRY BEFORE YOU BUY. That always applies, but especially with Layton there’s a menthol-ish note that depending on person is either a dealbreaker or nothingburger. For me, it goes away in a minute, so no problem, but some people experience it longer due to their nose/skin chemistry and dislike it. Potential Layton buyers should also probably know that it doesn’t shine if you directly sniff your skin after spraying it, it’s pretty harsh up close initially and takes some time to settle down. However, sillage is great almost instantly.

YOSLY sounds odd with how they write it up, and not quite my jam. Remarkable People sounds similar, interesting but eh. Divin'enfant sounds interesting and I've seen it recommended before.

Oh, fuck, this just sent me down a rabbithole. Bowie's my greatest hero and most if my style is inspired by him, and I never deeply considered what frags he may have used. Now I'm definitely curious with such a specific example.

Looking into it, he'd have fit in here a bit, seems to have talked about experimenting with layering and switched between some fairly high-end stuff that was known of, but that specific one is still up in the air. I think the marshmallow is what's really throwing people off. Found an interesting page about it with a lot of suggestions -

http://www.katiepuckriksmells.com/2015/04/fumes-in-news-what-does-david-bowie.html?m=1

Basically, the major things I picked up from this is:
>He was a huge fan of Vetiver and stuck with/layered Guerlain Vetiver for a while (Been meaning to try it for years but had trouble getting a decant)
>Minotaure was frequent but has been reformulated
>He liked some Floris, particularly Elite which allegedly Floris has a picture of him buying

It may have been a layer. Also, I found another article about Iman releasing a fragrance, where she mentioned specifically Guerlain again (It was apparently on his main site a while ago, too, which he specifically curated), and she said his favorite by the end and daily use was Tom Ford Noir Extreme. Which was odd to me, having not loved the basic noir, but hey. It's something. Also, hers sounds interesting with notes he'd have liked, kek.

Also someone mentioned Divin'Enf. So hey, maybe?

If you just want interesting buy their full sample set, and if there’s anything you didn’t get that you still want, pick it up in a 4 pack.

The bulk of their products are very mid anyway, so you’re not really missing out as far as great frags, but most of it is in fact very interesting and worth the sample.

This is a well crafted documentary and a good watch so far. I'm about halfway through. At about 24 minutes in they cut to a Tommy Hilfiger exec in NY, and they mention that now they have created a bottle for their fragrance it is now time to find a fragrance. What an ass-backward way of doing things. This was juxtaposed with just earlier a bit on House Guerlain and their storied history, talking about how It had been passed down from Master Perfumer to Master Perfumer all in family until just recently the next baton-holder would be an outsider. But even this outsider still felt like the individual he was inheriting it from, Jean Paul Guerlain was a fatherly figure to him. It shows the two ends of the spectrum; one focused on marketing and the other on tradition and the fragrance experience itself. It is ironic too, because earlier in the documentary the same Tommy Hilfiger executive talks about how their company wants to attract Generation Y, which she says describe themselves as creative., and seeking something that is created. But rather than go for the approach similar to House Guerlain, they start with essentially marketing by getting the bottle and the packaging first and then try to find a scent to fill it.

The documentary is great and highly recommended. My fav part is how blind sided I was when Jean-Paul Guerlain drops an unfathomably based Nbomb on television. There are probably only 10 people in the world that can say they did that.

Oh shit, when Tommy Hilfiger sees the bottle they are thinking of and he remarks it looks similar to a CD case, they all nod positively as if this is a great thing. How fucking ephemeral.

>Do people not wear perfume just because it smells good?
people have no opinions of their own so they expect others to make it for them. instead of developing their own taste and personality, they follow some sort preprogrammed cheat sheet where if they get A, they'll get B in return

When perfumes are described as Oriental what do they mean? I'm not just talking about the scent profile but also which Oriental. in American parlance, Oriental means Far East, so China, Japan, Korea, perhaps bits of SE Asia as well. Does Oriental mean that or is it south Asia or just the Middle East? The Orient Express ran from Paris to Istanbul after all.
