/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - WHOLECUTS EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

Yes
>Is there an easy way to tell by looking at a boot that it's stitchdown?
Sure, just research what stitch down looks like and you'll be able to tell the difference between that and good year welted or blake stitch.
It's pretty obvious.

Yeah as soon as I posted that I realized I'm retarded. Is it still easy to resole a crepe sole on a stitchdown boot? I read that's one of the advantages of a Goodyear welt is easy resole.

Also are those boots I posted in the first pic completely fucked or can I get them repaired or fix them somehow. Thanks.

Well it's happened to two pairs of boots now so I'm a bit irritated and would like to get around this issue altogether. Idk why this happens when I know tons of people wear the same boot every day no rotating but it happens to me. I even rotated this pair out daily for the most part and it still happened.

So do these boots not have a "rib" on the insole that the welt stitch goes through like pic related? All of these diagrams show this rib so there is a stitch going through the insole along with the glue. So whites (cheaper models) and redwings just use a completely flat insole without ribs to stitch to?

>> No.18054680

>>18054651
was it on red wings by any chance?
because it's almost expected for them and it's incredibly common, even if most people don't report it, because they have no idea it's even happening on their boots
red wing substitutes "arch support" by tucking in uppers very far underneath the arch and making the waist of the boot really narrow, the footbed has a very distinct "8" shape
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExML2UUC2po&t=310
problem is you put your weight on it and push it apart, which eventually leads to the gemming giving way under the arch
it's basicly a design flaw on red wings part and doesn't happen as often or as soon on other goodyear welt boots

i mean the app you have to use for the thunderdome is literally a storefront for grant stone now

also having it be 6 months incentivizes the worst behaviours to somehow make the boots look more worn than they are
i'm somehow completely fine with the funny business that probably goes on in the indigo invitational and how these SEAmonkeys roll around on the beach all day to get their iron hearts to fade faster
but when people ruin their boots in 6 months and then never wear them again past the end of contest it's a lot different than people blowing out the crotch of their jeans by cultivating the most swamp ass they can in a year

The funny thing is, cheating is against the rules in the indigo invitational while cheating isn't against the rules in the Patrina thunderdome solely because they don't want to spend time on determining that.

Thanks for the video - that was helpful along with the redwing failure due to inherently poor engineering. The thing I dont understand is that you still are gluing the insole down to the midsole with a stitchdown (in the toebox at least). PNW boots dont use cork so they glue directly to the midsole which definitely seems better. But its still glue so how do you know it wont also fail in a pnw stitchdown? Thanks

Hence it still seems like youre still having ONLY glue holding down the insole in the toebox, correct? In this case its only slightly better than gemming in a GYW boot? more surface area yes, but you still rely only glue holding down your insole in a stitchdown

>> No.18057288

>>18057281
All the PNW boots are a hybdrid stitchdown/naildown construction anyway, that's why the upper is only flared out like 120 degrees, the rest of the upper is folded in and nailed down. All of my stitchdown boots have the upper folded underneath the insole with a midsole and outsole attached outside, never seen a boot constructed like the diagram above. I assume desert boots like Clark's are done that way.

>> No.18057298

>>18057243
Because Nicks boots doesn't stitch their insoles anymore, it's akin to simply gluing on gemming. The nails in the heel area and waist may keep it secure, but not stitching the front will be like having a loose-fitting sock in a shoe. The stitchdown may keep it in, but all of that friction is no good.
>>18057260
Incorrect, it is stitched to the midsole.
>>18057281
That diagram would only apply to boots like old Clarks desert boots, or Rhodesian/Dutch/Boer Veldtschoen. Not having the stitching is bad, as it is a point of failure.

PNW style shoemaking is not necessarily stitchdown, like Danners, Clarks and other brands. It only stitches down at the toe. It's both a manufacturing method, and a style.
>>18057288
The Austrians do something similar, but they actually handwelt the insole, then finish by flaring the leather out and stitching. Steinkogler has many examples of such shoes.

>> No.18057316

>>18055075
So with stitchdown there's no gemming but is it because an entire midsole glued to an insole is so much larger surface area that the glue doesn't fail? >Because Nicks boots doesn't stitch their insoles anymore, it's akin to simply gluing on gemming. The nails in the heel area and waist may keep it secure, but not stitching the front will be like having a loose-fitting sock in a shoe. The stitchdown may keep it in, but all of that friction is no good

Alright this is exactly what I was gathering based on the videos. They stopped doing it because of "covid material shortages" and they say it's redundant. If you just wear nicks casually then yeah it is. But for an actually heavy dude work boot this seems like an issue. They stopped stitching all the way though, say it's redundant, but I don't see any price cuts because of it. Seems sort of shady to me on the outside.

With stitchdown boots of certain styles, the uppers are stitched to the midsole, which also functions as the insole. Less material, lighter, more flexible and cheaper. If an insole is glued to the midsole (as in a thick piece of leather the same thickness as the midsole itself, without any nails or stitching) then it'll simply be a point of failue that can be catastrophic, or intentional. The Austrian 'Goiserer' style of boots does this, in how they have both an insole and midsole, securely stitched, but they still leave extra space for the ability to add insoles, different sock thicknesses, etc.

As for Nick's boots, they are just lowering quality on purpose. Don't buy them. If anything, go to workboot.com and buy a pair of Viberg work boots from there. They're priced around 345-800+ USD, depending on the models. ( Only do this if you need it for work. If for fashion, then buy from another maker, like Frank's or even just from European bespoke makers.)

Basically OP is talking about how the Upper is connected to the Insole.

One
Blake stitch shoes, that is through the Blake stitch
On Gyw shoes, that is through the welt stitch, the point of connection to the insole- the rib, however, is glued to the insole, so it can come unglued.

On Nicks, and also Viberg, Wesco. The back part is by nails, but the front part is just glue, that is correct. More precisely: the lining part of the upper is fixed to the insole by glue. The upper has to be flanged out so it no longer in contact with the insole.
Failure of this lasted lining is harder since there is more contact area. It can come undone, but it’s during resoling, when the midsole is ripped off, often time, the lasted lining comes flying too. The cobbler is supposed to glue it back down.

Anyone crying about Nicks removing the blake stitch should remember Wesco never even had a blake stitch on the first place

I found this Swedish shop that sells full grain leather belts for like 60€
https://www.saddler.com/p/odense-belt-dark-brown
No idea if they're any good but they also have leather wallets and bags.

My only quality belt is from TLB which they sent to me for free with a shoe order, it's crazy good and made from CF Stead suede but they normally charge 105€ for them

Leather care products are a mystery, you just need to be careful with them.

I remember a post where somebody applied cordovan cream on normal leather shoes and ruined them straight away, since then I've been careful to just apply what I know works for sure: renovateur, cream polish, wax - all by saphir.
And on suede I spray saphir invulner for water protection. I bought a no-name spray from a local c*bbler and when I went home I read it's only good for synthetic leather, immediately returned it. Normies only buy mall tier trash so c*bblers only sell the stuff that works with mall tier trash, not high quality leather.

not that i blame them, their high SPI double row stitchdown was virtually unresolable and realistically has to be handstitched to come out completely clean

A review of Carmina's new $1500 'bespoke' service
They scan your feet with a 3D scanner, I guess it only works if there's a Carmina store close to you.
https://shoegazing.com/2024/03/23/review-carmina-3d-scan-bespoke-derby-in-natural-chromexcel/

He says the fit is good but the construction is standard Carmina factory stuff, good for $500 but not really a $1500 shoe by any means.

It's still like 1/3rd of the price a proper bespoke shoe would cost, and much faster.

it's just a program slithly modifying their pre-existing lasts to your 3d scan, it's not even sophisticated enough to choose the best fitting last to your foot
you just choose a normal carmina custom shoe model, which is a pre-existing pattern on a specific last tied to that pattern and it brute forces the last shape by stretching and pulling it out to fit your foot
this has not much to do with bespoke, you get bespoke not just for the fit, but also for a really tight and form fitting silhouette
the result of this is still a very crude stock shoe look, but for a retardedly high price

he spent $1000 premium for a $450 RTW shoe and had essentially paid for nothing more than the equlvalent of having a patch of leather glued in the spots that pinch on the last
complete gimmick

As much as I like boots, if I expect to be walking for hours on an urban environment I tendo to pick something with a bit of cushioning and lightweight, like Nike Internationalist, Pegasus 83 or New Balance 574.
For hard smooth surfaces my Red Wings 875 with the wedge sole work pretty well, and my Trumans on the 79 last with their slightly sprung toe help the natural movement of my gait (even though they could do with a tiny bit of arch support).
But after a long day of walking around on hard surfaces somethings gotta hurt. In my experience, what's gonna hurt depends on the shoe I'm wearing, and that's where the tradeoff comes into play.
