A thread for vintage watches. Dress, sporty, rectangular, chronographs.
Contemporary watches with an evident vintage inspiration are also welcome.
Keep it small.

Citizen, Seiko and Grand Seiko spammers are explicitly undesired and not allowed here.

Vintage watch people are just another flavor of the "old money" (poor) cope. If you just owned your poorness, nobody would judge, but you have to do this whole "temporarily embarrassed millionaire" thing and it's cringe

Sort of? It's from early 2000s.

>In the year 2000 the Frey family sold the company to an Italian investor. This was developing a new collection of watches, to continue the company's tradition of high quality manufacture products. The new manager Beppe Menaldo, who had been active in the watch area for 38 years (eg at Breguet and Blancpain) tried to maintain the authenticity of the watches and not to distort the spirit of the brand.

The Omega is TINY. Def not unisex at all lol. My wife has worn it a few times so it still is seeing some action. She lucked out really, she has 7 gold watches now. There's a Bailed & Mercier that could prob be unisex I'll dig it out later and take a pic

Probably one of the Seamasters, which can be had for $400 and Omega just brought back. There's basically no difference between a vintage Seamaster and a modern $13k one. The only thing you need to worry about it fake dials on an Omega pocket watch movement, mostly if a watch is from Pakistan or India the chances of you getting fucked on them is high.

Id look at the Longines Heritage lineup. Check out the Legend Diver for a genuine divers watch
>>18053623
Id avoid actual vintage unless you put in the time and research. You can find real gems, but again not without lots of time and research
There are lots of issues with frankensteins and mods that tank the market value of the watch. Most come from the india area, east europe, south america... Basically any shithole countries or areas.
Parts are slowly getting harder to find and they do need servicing every few years. They probably also arent going to be very water resistant even if rated for it. Its been 50+ years so who knows what seals were changed out properly or if they are just totally worn out. There are also issues with rust which some people will claim is patina.
Basically if you just like it for the look and dont care about anything else like value or function, go ahead. Otherwise stay away.

>> No.18054050

No prob bro. Btw if its just about the looks, why do you write them off? Is it because you want close to genuine?
East europe and south america might be ok if thats the case. Those ones tend to use genuine parts, but they frankenstein it a bit, so for example a 60s seamaster may have hands or caseback from a geneve or a different era seamaster. Sometimes it might just be missing a locking ring (waterproofing seal thats visible only at certain angles). Sometimes they redial them (one of the biggest devaluers) which is repainting or touching up the dial. This takes practice to see but some are almost inconspicuous.
Now that i think about it, there are some from south korea (i forget the ebay name but they list many watches) which do a complete refresh. They are definitely redialed and frankensteined, but some of the best work ive seen and go for a fair price.
Last point is beware of vintage "gold" watches. Most will advertise as gold plated/filled which is okay (standard then was 5-10mic and 20-50mic respectively for swiss) but some fuckers will still call it real gold. Real solid gold will have a stamping somewhere with 9k/10k/14k/18k (lol some will fake these stampings too) and the whole watch and caseback should be gold so beware.
Rolled gold is somewhere in between. It's a thick layer (like 0.1-0.5mm) of real gold wrapped over the steel. These normally come on two tone watches so theyre a safer buy for "gold"

I think it is because I'm mostly around intelectual type of people (im a phd researcher), so they-re not very old fashioned, but I'm sure any day a boomer will say something lol

or maybe it is something about the fit, since I wear this watch when my clothes compliment it (roomy draped dress pants, a nice button down, chelsea boots), I like to think that it stimulates people to be less rigid about jewelry if it fits the rest of their style

Just be careful with the glass. Theyre hard to source and are pretty specific. I saw someone retrofit a generic but itll change the way the light reflects, etc
I bought this and a Lord Marvel, but ended up going with the Lord Marvel since the King was in rough shape in person. Its shape is also a lot more like a tie fighter in person. Not as aesthetic as in pictures imo. The dial is more glittery than the lord marvel though. Better angles and more polished inserts

From the photos, looks like it partially can. If there's residue on it then these can be removed. If it's directly on the zapon lacquer then that's a no unless you can find a dial painter to redo the whole thing for you (B&M service is weak and they don't deal with vintage very well since they don't have many old parts in stock and don't have the staff to do restoration).

Nowadays “in-house” is the fashion but that was never the case years ago.

Companies had things they did well and outsourced the stuff they couldn’t do to others.

Rolex, for example, made cases, but their movements were made by Aegler, their bracelets by Gay Freres, their hands and dials by other suppliers.

VC didn’t make their own ebauches but they would heavily modify them to make complicated movements. The blanks they would get from suppliers like JLC. Obviously they also did the finishing in-house.

My best bet would be, waterproofing failure and debris/humidity entering from the central hole, leading to the damage starting at the center.
It's not fully convincing but the other possibilities even less so.
>half of the hour hand was rubbing on the dial constantly as it was running
You'd see damage on the hour hand itself too (and with the way the hand lume has clearly fallen off, it's safe-ish to assume the hands are original) as it would need to be seriously bent to rub on the dial and not be blocked by the applied logo at 12. Also, the damage would be more even and you'd see a bit of a circular dug groove
> too short pinion? mismatched dial and movement?
See above
>badly seated dial?
nah, the damage would not be that close to the center and you'd see the hour hand look uneven and beaten from below, most likely
>just a shitty job done on hand placement by a battery jockey?
You'd need to be really terrible to get that result. And the mark of a true watchmaking hack is traces a bit further from the center : the hallmark of the hackjob's favourite tool.

I dunno, I'd consider some discontinued stuff to be vintage despite being later than that.
picrel, the entire 2100 collection was discontinued so it could be turned into the Léman collection.
Which was then discontinued to make way for the modern designs of the L Evolution collection.
Which was one of the biggest flops in watch history.
So now, the slim 2100s barely have any continuity. I don't really know why but that makes them feel more distant and "vintage" than they are since the collection was launched in the 90s and peaked in 1999-2000.

That's just :
1 - standard military-type dial
2 - Blancpain being hyperconservative in its design, always having been and having nearly gone bankrupt with the L Evolution series when they tried not to be.
Not their fault they have not updated their design language since the 50s and everyone aped on it. That's like saying blues musicians were lazy and just copied Led Zepplin's chord usage : you're accusing the source of copying the imitators. Can Blancpain be "neovintage" when they are the one that stayed consistant?
And 1995 was almost 30 years ago.
In car terms (at least locally here) that's 1 year away from being elligible for an oldtimer collector plate and legal status.
It's just weird to try and determine what is and isn't vintage, and what determines it. Our general idea of what "looks vintage" is still stuck with 50s to 70s aesthetics when really, as far as watches are concerned, on plenty of technical aspects things have not changed that much in 60 years. Eterna's pattern for automatic movements is just too handy and the alternatives too inconvenient all of them died out in the late 60s. Ratchet-cam transmissions were cumbersone and everyone gave up on them when they figured out how to affordably make invertor wheels instead.
also, a fun fact to think over : the Hebdomas in >>18062592 stayed in production until the early 90s. Would the later models not count as vintage despite still having pocket watch movements inside?
And is "retro" a useful category for stuff that might chronologically fall into or close to vintage but be structurally or aesthetically too modern?
I don't know, it's just fun to think over with all the possible examples and counter-exmples. ESPECIALLY with the 80s and 90s as the possible cutoff point since these were such chaotic decades in watchmaking.

>> No.18062820

>Aesthetics (and probably production process) were just different back then.
Agreed.
Those 80s style two tone sports watches like the Ebel Sportclassic, Cartier Santos, Vacheron Phidias, Chopard St.Moritz and others are old enough to be vintage but still feel of a period, not the nebulous “vintage”.

I’m sure in the 2000s, watches from the 70s weren’t considered vintage yet either.
