I used to dislike it before I held the watch, actually, it's now my favorite feature of the dial. I am a no date kinda guy but this fits the watch perfectly. Note how the date window is placed perfectly in line with the arabics along the dial. Note how the date window doesn't jump at you because it's placed at 4:30 instead of 3, despite the color contrast. It's not what's expected. I prefer a date at 4:30 or 6 to a date at 3 any time of the week, pic related. This looks like shit, sorry VC. The new date only Overseas has been ruined, for me it's not an option anymore.

It’s a giant asymmetrical blob of white on a black dial.
The least they could have done is colormatched the date wheel.

No, I'm telling you unironically that that's a photo effect. Seriously, look at the watch in person and you'll notice how it blends in. I can't really explain why but it does, I'm not making this up. I didn't like it at all before I had the watch in my hand, this looks fucking perfect. A tone in tone date window would have ruined the dial because the date would blend into the guilloche dial too much, making it look like an imperfection in the pattern.

The white background matches the arabics, I think that's why it works, it's a very weird optical illusion. For comparison, here's the white dial version, and it looks worse for it. That shit sticks out like a sore thumb.

And VC aren't lazy or stupid, they could have color matched that date window, they just knew it wasn't the right thing to do.

This picture shows the effect a little bit. Notice how the date at first glance just looks like arabic chaptering around the dial, because they are both white colored. Cope is basically the perfect term.

VC is coping because the only successful sports watch is the one where they slavishly followed someone else’s formula.

So basically you went to Chrono24, typed in "Overseas" and filtered from lowest to highest price, right? This is what happens when you have a 12k budget but still want "high horology". I have read other anons' posts about the Explorer in the previous thread and I have something to say.
I own and enjoy the current 36mm explorer, the watch looks great on an Oyster bracelet. It's a great watch. But it pisses me off that it's a 19mm bracelet instead of the classic 20mm one. Did you even look up what early 2000s Vacheron really is? Richemont just bought the brand and they needed to maximize profit to keep the brand afloat. Same story with JLC, IWC, Piaget : the watches made in the 2000s are to avoid like the plague.

Nah, I'm just allergic to people who post literal garbage and pass it off as some kind of arcane watch knowledge. You're so wrong that it hurts. I can post a million threads where the 3rd gen is shat on for being a step backwards in design. There is only one redeeming quality that makes the 3rd gen interesting, the superior movement and the fact that they are more expensive. That's it. It's considered by all to be a step back in every other regard. But don't take my word for it.

You tried this exact same line of attack with the guy who posted the 90s VC a couple days ago.
It doesn’t work because vacheron constantin is a Trinity brand and those watches say vacheron constantin on the dial.

You’re being needlessly petty.

You can criticize the Overseas on its flaws (of which there are many) but saying it’s not a real vc is just moronic. Not everything they make is a high complication statement piece.

When you say "I have a Vacheron Constantin" to a watch guy, he immediately pictures something like pic related, the American 1921 or the 222. Something in precious metal, rather dressy, and with that "old money" aesthetic Vacheron is known for. Basically something you paid $50k and patiently waited 2 years to get.
Show him your piece of shit stainless steel 2005 Overseas you bought on Chrono24 and he'll politely say "excuse me sir" and go as far away from you as he can.

I'm sure even VC will send your watch to fucking Baume & Mercier if you want to have it serviced by them.

It's not even close to the cheapest OS. The cheapest OS is the gen 1 let alone the Quartz shitters.

The black dial OS is approaching 20k, which puts it just a few thousand away from the entry level 3rd gen (white dial). You are so full of shit it's not even funny.

If you had said grey dial OS gen 2, I may ALMOST agree with you, but the black dial is the second most valuable flavor and by a lot. In fact the time only black dial is the same price as the dual time variant and just below the Chronograph, off by a couple thousand if that.

People just don't like his tranny bullshit, he's full of painful jealousy and it shows. And the problem is that he is FACTUALLY wrong. You can scream about UMAD all day long, the guy is LITERALLY LYING about FACTS in order to make another man's purchase bad (which is to say nothing of what he owns, if anything).

He's here claiming that this piece is a cheap low entry Vacheron, then he shifted the goalposts to cheapest OS, and that still isn't true. It's factually the middle rank of all Overseas models, and that's nothing to be ashamed of.

So his argument is basically
>how dare you own an Overseas at a reasonable price point

What the fuck.

Well at 500$ there are actually many watches that you can choose from. I'd argue even that the biggest marker is around 300$ to 800$
Have you looked into orient? If brand is not important then I would also recommend san martin. Sadly, if it's seiko then the only one at that price point that I can recommend is the Alpinist burlt that one goes for 750$ But you might be able to find it slightly used at 500$
Orient I would recommend the Bambino if you want a more dressy-watch aka more plain looking one.
Some entry level mido might also do the trick. But, the khaki that you posted is also a solid choice even though I don't have any experience with them or Hamilton in general.
Just go out there and try them on yourself. There's more watch stores than one might think. They are invisible to someone who isn't looking for one.

In Latin, Jupiter was spelt IVPPITER. As you don’t mess with gods, Romans might have felt hesitant to engrave part of their supreme deity’s name on a sundial or printed in books. This is why the number IIII, even though inconvenient, might have been prefered over IV. While sundials had become obsolete with the advent of watchmaking, the number IIII might have been used just for the sake of tradition.
