37 year old guy here, so I've got a lot of female friends pushing middle age. First of all I'd give up on "cool," we don't really get to be cool at our age, at least not in the way we were when we were young, and trying to cling onto that just ends up coming off as pathetic. Cool past 35 is really more down to attitude than appearance.

Beyond that, fitness is everything. I'm not talking about a rock hard gym body but the older you get the less you can pull off being overweight. Being skinny can make a 40 year old hotter than a lot of 25 year olds, but you can't pull off being a bit chubby like a younger girl who's still got the youthful cute thing going on can.

As for style, IMO simple but feminine and relatively conservative is the way to go. I know girls my age who still look really good in a skater dress or a basic miniskirt with a nice top. Outdoorsy stuff can work too as other people have pointed out, and if you live in the right place so can the country girl look. As for hair just avoid anything crazy, nothing buzzed or shaved and no full wild colors, colored highlights on otherwise natural hair can be nice though. I have a friend who's a year or two older than me and basically fits what I just described, and she's still one of the most attractive girls I know, I'm generally into younger women but I'd be all over her if she weren't married. (Incidentally she also told me the same thing once, which made our whole relationship awkward since I'm friends with her husband too, but that's a whole different sotry.)
