What can I say, I fell for it.
>Forgot about this thing after the hype wore off
>was in Zurich visiting friends
>came by the Swatch store
>consumerism triggered
>fuck it, I’m gonna get it if they have it in stock
>they had it in stock

It’s not even worth the 250 bucks, it feels insanely cheaper, although it does sit comfortable but you can TELL it’s made out of plastic by just looking at it. The dial looks beautiful though and it’s not a bad watch per se.
I might sell it and just get the Tissot Gentleman, heck even the quartz version would be fine at this point. I ultimately just want one watch for every occasion, sporty and elegant yet neither dress nor diver. I’d prolly get something like an Aqua Terra and or an Explorer, a g shock for sports and manual labor and call it a day.

Spring drive: Is it more mechanical or more quartz? And why?

>> No.18030705

>>18030700
Depends on who you ask. Haters will say quartz, fanboys will say mechanical.
I'd say mechanical because 90% of the components are the same as a mechanical watch. Some say it's only about how the watch is regulated and nothing else matters, so it's a quartz for them.

>> No.18030713

>>18030700
>trying to start a fight lol

It’s both. The hands are driven by the mechanical force of a spring unwinding, the rate of the movement is controlled by the vibration of a quartz crystal with an electric current passing through it.

If you’ve ever disassembled a watch movement to service it, you’d see it’s the regulation and adjustment across multiple positions that is as much art as science.
Simply reassembling a gear train can be done while half asleep.

>> No.18030714

>>18030700
It's powered entirely mechanically, by a spring. There are zero batteries or capacitors.
But the timekeeping is done by a quartz crystal instead of an escapement.

>> No.18030719

>>18030713
This. The beating heart of the watch is the most important part. Spring Drive replaces it with quartz.
There’s a reason Grand Seiko has kept on making truly mechanical movements.

Making a seriously accurate movement with a purely mechanical system is difficult. Using quartz? Not so much.

>> No.18030723

>>18030719
Making a quartz regulator work purely on spring tension was monstrously difficult. It took decades to make it work, and iirc the original inventor never saw the actual production versions.

It's neat from a technical standpoint, and the gliding hand is insanely cool irl

>> No.18030727

>>18030723
Wasn’t difficult to make, just expensive to produce. Those are two different things. Even quartz movements were expensive to produce at one point. It’s not like any technology in it is beyond the ken of a second semester physics student.

>> No.18030733

>>18030705
>Haters will say quartz, fanboys will say mechanical.
You can really lump these two together. Fanboys treat anything other than fawning adoration as ‘hating’.

Most people don’t care or like other things better. That makes them haters.
Gos forbid anyone actually criticizes, however mildly or backed up with facts they may be; that’s a declaration of war.

This is what I have. Kind of a piece of shit. The numerals have remnants of dead radium, but the hands are solid blued hands, so at one point they were likely replaced for whatever reason. Also the center of the dial is not as darkened as the rest, which is an indicative of radium-burn. As the hands went around over the years they slowly burned the dial evenly, except near the center, where the hands would not have a lume filling.

Also I assume the bezel was chromed as well, but it either all came off, or it partially came off, and someone just decided to remove all of it.

I don't really understand why the multibillion dollar Swatch group, which seems to literally have more money than God, can't come up with a way to make a production automatic chronograph watch under 14mm thick. Instead they charge $1800 to pull the same trick that Chinese manufacturers pull when they put handwound Seagull 1963 movements into their $300 Daytona knockoffs.

UG was a top end, premium brand back in its heyday. Closer to JLC than Rolex, in terms of marketing.
If Breitling makes UG something similar, fine, but I worry that Breitling would not want to be the second-tier brand in their own company so they’ll make UG a sort of Tudor.

Universal Geneve was an absolute legend — and probably the biggest legend ever in the world of horology — but merely in terms of design and fashion status of those who wore their watches. The movements were not that good as people believe. The only way Breitling could revive the brand without shitting on it is by faithfully reproducing its classic chronographs — size, colours, hands, concepts and materials (except for the mineral glass) should be exactly the same — but with updated and perfected contemporary Swiss movements. This will imply very high prices, but it's the only way to make justice to one of the most glorious and worshiped watch brands of all time.

I'd be quite surprised if the 54, which just came out last year, gets new iterations. I feel that the P01 will finally be put to rest, and they might make smaller GMTs or smaller Tudor Rangers. They might put the METAs certification in the 54, though. I'm not buying a watch until the summer, so it is not a big deal.

It depends on what kind of watch ot is and what your tastes are. As long as a watch fits on your wrist without the lugs hanging over the top you can wear it, but most watches really don't need to be very large. If a watch has a lot of complications on it then it may make sense to make it larger for the sake of being able to read it clearly, but if you're just wearing a 3 hand watch with no complications it doesn't really even make sense to go much larger than 38mm in diameter. You can add a lot of weight and make it uncomfortable pretty quickly.

It loses about 10 minutes a day and the date complication stop on the stem does not engage. Tried to get it serviced at a local jeweler, all they did was heavily scratch the back and replace the crown (losing the original zodiac logo crown in the process) rather than repairing anything.
