/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - LACE TO TOE EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

I'm kinda asshurt right now. Winter is over and I got only 2 wears of my French rangers. Literally only 2. It barely snowed. Not that I can't wear them when there's no snow, but it's also not cold at all. It's just much more comfortable and convenient to wear normal shoes. Literally no reason to wear them. What a waste. I'm on the fence about ordering a pair of black captoe oxfords from TLB. I sometimes need to wear oxfords with a suit at work, and my current oxfords from Carmina are a really bad fit and hurt my feet.
But I don't wear them often enough to justify dropping 500 on a new pair.

My Carminas havent sold on ebay yet either.

Once IRs are broken in completely, they're comfortable regardless of what socks you wear (as long as they're not super thin or so thick they crowd your foot widthwise). In my specific case, my Fox River Gibraltar socks were so thick it made me feel like the D width was too narrow. Your mileage might vary with an E width though. The whole idea is that the footbed molds to your foot. Putting in an insole kind of defeats the purpose of the materials in the boot. If you have access to a Redwing store, I'd say take advantage of it and bring along your preferred insole if it's that important to you.

Not in my experience, but I'm a D almost E on brannock and I've never had issues with width on footwear. All my boots are D width.
For comparision, here's my Thursdays high tops on 10US vs my Converse All-Stars in 9.5US. I'd say they're roughly the same size and shape all trough the last, with a couple mms of difference here and there. Don't notice any difference in how they fit.
I got them a couple of years ago or so, by the time the craze for leather minimalist sneakers was already dwindling. Originally I wanted the lop tops, but stumbled across this pair on Vinted. Someone bought them, wore them for a short stroll and decided they weren't for him, so sold them for half the retail price. I managed to haggle down the price a bit and paid about 50 eurobucks for them, which I think was a good price all things considered.
The leather is nice, thick and stiff and I love the waxed cacao, however, I've only worn them two or three times before storing them away and forgetting about them until you mentioned them on this thread.
The reason is because I'm not sure which niche these sneakers are supposed to fill. They're less cushioned and more uncomfortable out of the box than regular sneakers, but they don't have the arch and ankle support of regular boots. Everytime I've wonr them I was thinking that I would be best served wearing boot or sneakers instead of these. Perhaps if I had got the low tops I would have worn them more in the spring and summer, but as they are, I hardly have any use for them.
In terms of quality I've seen no issue that Thursday is infamous from, no weird coloring, no failure points on the stitching nor anywhere else.
I thought about reselling them but I like the waxed cacao a lot and haven't decided to do so yet. Who knows? Maybe I'll wear them more from now on.

I have a pair of Vibergs made with a limited leather, I really like them and decided to pick up a CXL pair from them since I know the last fits well and I trust their clicking. The CXL pair arrives and I can immediately tell there's practically no room in the toe box. I'm a bit confused now, these are the same size and the same last but the CXL pair clearly doesn't fit, I don't even have to lace them up. Maybe the limited pair was a bit larger than usual and I got lucky? Either way they're going back so I can size up.

I did the math.
It's nonsense.

I'd prefer a low profile rubber sole like TLB's "City" sole or the Edward Green R1/R2 etc but since they don't have that in the Bonafe GMTO or Meccariello RTW I'd have to do topy + toe plates.

Bonafe is only a bit less than Meccariello but they're both totally off the charts compared to good ol TLB which does really great dress shoes.
Mecciarello is basically very close to Edward Green pricing which is nonsense.

EG is about 1200€ from their own store (1050 GBP) without trees.
It's like 1050€ from a retailer (Frans Boone) though, but also no trees and he only carries the black chelsea.

Anyway I don't doubt that they're both probably better and handwelted and all that but the price increase is huge and this is an oxford I won't be wearing all that often. Though it will be worn in important occasions where I am dressing up so that's something to consider.

What do you mean by workboots?

I think you can wear for example a Coniston in a business casual look. Or a Galway. Or the various clones like Carmina's "Calway".
They look great with grain leather and also in suede.

I don't think these are really "workboots" though. And I wouldn't do it with a commando sole.

The last and pattern plays a big role, you could do a similar boot in similar leather from a different maker and it would be out of place.

TLB has narrow heels and waists even on their wide lasts.
Bonafe is also like this and many other EU dressier makers.
English makers are starting to slim down too - C&J has some new "refined" lasts that are narrower there.

Alden heels always 2 sizes narrower than the rest of the shoe, but from experience that doesn't mean much, their heel is still pretty large.

Stay away from Carmina, heels are huge.

timbs are shit quality fast fashion although they do look good

you can go a wedge sole if you want to avoid looking like height coping by which i imagine you mean boot with a pronounced looking heel, i'm not short thowever so im not up on manlet lore so take my rec with a grain of salt. white's perry select is a good entry boot with a wedge sole but is a moctoe so definitely completely casual / some people don't like. wedge soles are way more comfy for walking on concrete assuming you just want them for casual wear and don't need a substantial tread but may not be suitable if you actually need them for fucking around in harder enviroments. If a wedge catches your eye viberg's scout line has had some really great boots but it is big money and i wouldn't pull the trigger on them until you know what you want in a boot but could be good for some inspo

Carmina also offers a wedgie sole called "aspen", it's made from hevea milk
I own boots with commando soles made from the same material, it's really soft and squishy and silent. Might be too soft for boots to be honest.

Carmina only has them in natural and black though, and their lasts are all pretty dressy so combining dressy boots with wedgie sole maybe not ideal

the MP is what they call "handsewn stitchdown" construction, which is the superior traditional handwelted version of PNW boot construction
it is also made on the MP last

the CMP is just regular single row stitchdown construction
it is made on the 5050 last, which is a hybrid frankenstein last of the MP last and 55 last
the slimmer almond toe shape is from the MP and the more bulbous heel and higher arch is from the 55 last, personally i think the combo looks fucking goofy
pic is some clowns custom boot on the 5050 last

depends on how you define "decent"
it's pretty close to bovine leather as fas as creasing and has the same big grain wrinkles

With the extra -15% code I could grab a high quality, full canvas, 100% wool suit made in Italy for 425€.

I have a work event coming up in 2.5 months and I definitely need to buy a suit.
