Are all the grand seiko watches worth the price or are the cheaper entry level ones not that good? I know the normal modern Seikos have slipped in quality. A place near me is having a GS event with sushi and crap like that so planning on going and might end up getting one but probably not going to be getting any of the $10k+ options. It’s impossible to get a straight answer here since any criticism of GS, no matter how trivial, will get the GS fans shrieking.
GS’s marketing department is very good at developing brand loyalty by installing a massive persecution complex in its customers.

>you’ve purchased a fine watch, sir. Just watch out, now everyone will hate you. It’s safest to just hang out with other GS owners.

so with these new factories coming out, will people actually be able to buy watches at retail and not have to deal with AD shit anymore?

I have such a hard time believing that rolex's issue is that they simply cannot produce enough watches as opposed to ADs selling watches under the table to clients on the basis of kickbacks or holding them over people's heads in order to get them to buy other shit (as people often do)

if rolex would get rid of the AD system and open their own stores they could eliminate that problem but they stand to benefit from the current system and it costs money to open up their own stores so why would they do that

Since you a retard and can't comprehend how business works at billion dollar scale I'll spell it out.
That's 36 locations in one go.
Rolex does everything at a glacial pace, first the certified pre-owned program, now owns stores, finally the 3 new factories.
Finally it looks like they are timing it perfectly, by the time everything is running at capacity in 2026 the economy could enter another bull cycle so all of their increased production will be sold

Quite the opposite.

Buy one good watch, even if it's expensive, and it will last the rest of your life. There's zero need to go on a "watch journey", buying a succession of increasingly expensive shitters for some vaguely defined reason like needing to learn what you like or some bullshit.

Pick a good watch that you like.
Buy it and never worry about watches again.
If you can't buy it now, start saving.

I have an orient kanno and i like it. It definitely drifts forward in time noticeably (maybe 30-60 seconds after a week of wearing) but for the money it's a good option and i like the look of it. The accuracy thing also doesnt matter if you have a few watches you wear on rotation. Most of the automatic watches dont have enough power reserve to really cycle around watches without needing to set the time on them again.

When those times come you start to question why youre not just buying a sub $500 watch and if they really fall apart after 10 years you just get another. Battery? There is no battery in a spring drive.
And what is there to say? For one, It's much more accurate than seiko says it is, from my experience, I get +2 seconds per month. The dial is a pure 10/10. Zaratsu isn't just marketing. The bracelet is "OK" at best sadly and the movement could've been a bit prettier, like the 9S movement counterparty for example.

You don't have to swap the battery but you do have to get it serviced every few years. Since Seiko is the only company that does spring drive, you have no choice. Service will be between 700-1000 dollars.

Seiko says that service is required every 3-4 years. In reality, it can probably go longer, especially if you don't wear it every day. But it does have mechanical components that do eventually need to be lubricated, cleaned, and adjusted; and service is often preventative. A little cleaning can prevent major corrosion or wear from damaging something expensive.

It is worth pointing out, though, that Omega only recommends service every 8 years and Rolex only recommends every 10 years.

1000 dollars is on the high end of the scale. Probably for a chronograph movement or a movement that needed a lot of replacement parts.
Most reports I've seen of users' service costs for basic three-hand Spring Drive movements are between around 700-800 Euros. That's normal for a luxury watch and Seiko wants its GS line to be considered as such.

That really is unfortunate. I had originally been gravitating towards omega but rolex has grown on me, but i somewhat like the idea of having a nice watch that not everyone will necessarily know is a nice watch. That, GS designs, and being a weeb have made me look more into their offerings lately but thats a lot more frequent recommended maintenance and i've definitely heard of Rolexs that went decades without service and were well enough.

I've had my GS since 2016 and it's running +6 a day. Probably will get it serviced in a year or two.

My watchmaker says that with modern oils and what not you should be able to go comfortably without servicing for 8 years unless you are unbelievably hard on a watch. It's currently months from Omega, Rolex and GS so theres a strong argument for finding a local guy (also the co-axial movements are a nightmare to get parts for apparently) if you can find one that actually knows what he's doing so it's worth taking that into account as well.

It depends on the shape of your wrist and the bracelet, but generally the "one finger rule" is a good one, and it definitely should not be able to flip around on your wrist without at least very deliberate effort. You would be surprised at how much your wrist contracts/expands and you WILL notice this if the watch is too tight.

I have a relatively broad yet flat wrist (7.25") and none of my braceleted watches have an "on the fly" micro-adjustment. So I find that these watches can slide up and down my wrist by about 1.5 inches, but adjusting them any tighter by adding/removing links (even half links) is impossible without creating discomfort. However I have grown to like this and even wear my watches with straps a little looser to match the feel.

it's tricky like that because there are watches that I like but can't afford that range anywhere from a new datejust to an AP offshore or a daytona or a really nice patek or a different JLC with some crazy complication or something like that

the hard part to me is nailing that intersection of

without coping myself into thinking that what I can afford is what I really want

but as far as the prospect of the seiko goes for whatever reason I just don't get the same sense of wonder looking at a seiko as I do the JLC like in my earlier post. whether thats because Im blinded by money or marketing or something else is hard to say.

It's the SLGA009 also called the white birch.
If you ask 10 people when to service a watch, everyone will tell you something different. Some people wear a spring drive watch daily for five years and never serviced them, some wear it twice per month and service it every 2 years.
If it starts losing accuracy, then I guess it is time to service it.
There is a model with their newest 9S movement, purely mechanical and high beat (36000) with an 80 hour power reserve. The movement finishing is also much prettier on that one. The dial is a lot more "silved" and loud though, which might turn you off and there are other small differences too like the crown being a bit bigger on the slgh005 and the date window being a bit smaller. Overall though it's the same watch with a different movement. Because it's a traditional movement though and not a spring drive, if you service it, you won't have to send it back to japan.

How long have you had it? The more i look into spring drive the more i want one, the service interval and costs are a bit worrying but i'm more of the opinion of it if aint broke don't fix it so i likely wouldnt be having it serviced until it was actually having noticeable problems. It seems like the every 4 years is probably just them being on the safe side. The main issue would be having to send it to japan to actually get the thing serviced instead of being able to take it somewhere local.

>> No.18013756

Had it for about 2 years. servicing cost will definitely add up over time; I expect to have to send both of them to japan in another 2~3 years given I intend to keep them. spring drive is cool I guess, the real hidden benefit from not having your watch tick is that it is completely silent.

Sure, if your salesman tells you your 6000 dollar watch will cost you another 800 dollars in three or four years, you might not want to buy it.

Instead, he says “nah, don’t worry about it.” and bets on the idea that you’ll probably flip it before it needs service anyway.

It’s not the quartz part that wears out, it’s the mechanical parts. The mainspring is constantly winding and unwinding against the barrel wall. The geartrain is just like a mechanical watch’s.

By the time it’s becoming inaccurate there’s some major wear. The first things you’d notice would be inefficient winding and less power reserve.

The video i linked is straight from the mouth of GS saying that 4-5 year interval is just to maintain top precision. I pulled this out of a box after 20 years, wound it up and it works fine enough. I'd be surprised if the mechanically superior spring drive would not also be able to handle a few decades without maintenance but it's really all guess work as i havent been able to find anyone online that's gone more than 8 or so years without having theirs serviced.

I've looked at a couple other options around there (couple grand seikos, tudor black bay, speedmaster reduced, other random things) and this one just sticks out to me

the other thing is JLC makes really nice watches and the opportunity to get one for 4k feels pretty big, especially since im a huge fan of their chronograph calendar

Found this old as shit Eddie Bauer watch I got for like $60 back in 2006. Yes I’m fucking old. Do you think there’s any point getting the glass replaced for something so cheap? alright anons. after years of wearing apple watches, I am finally going to start wearing "real" watches. that said, I need some help. here's my plan moving forward:
>every day watch: ???
>dress watch: ???
>complication watch (gmt or chronograph): ???
>beater watch: citizen promaster quartz (already acquired)
need some help from you guys in determining which watches I should get that fit each of the categories that are not accounted for yet. my wrists are about 6.3 inches. here are my requirements:
>not greater than $4000 for a singular watch
>34-39mm
>lug to lug no greater than 46mm
>quartz or automatic, though I like accuracy so either cosc certified or high quality quartz is preferable
>want my collection to "rhyme", so try to base your choices off of the watch I have purchased already under the beater watch category
>not a fan of vintage watches
>I tend to like watches that are simple, elegant, and reliable
>black or white dial

I appreciate the help negros

That's just insane if true. I'd buy a Grand Seiko quartz if I liked any of their models but sadly they don't do it for me. It's absurd that other top watch brands don't roll out quartz watches and it pains me to think that brands and enthusiasts are so up their own rears to not realize how quartz is superior in so many ways.

most people that buy watches buy them because of the value/prestige they display. a casio g shock is more accurate than a rolex submariner but most people would prefer the submariner since it has value/prestige. most here are victims of the organic, decades long word of mouth marketing campaigns of luxury watch brands. the only reason a brand like rolex is still afloat is because of the public's opinion of them. if people bought watches just to tell time a company like rolex would've gone out of business by now.

Reminds me of MVMT. It aggravates me to admit this but MVMT was the brand that got me introduced to watches. I was in my teens and I saw their ads all over instagram. I eventually bought one and spent like $150 for it to come to my door not working kek. I emailed the company and they sent me a new one. Oddly enough I actually liked it and had a cute girl tell me it was nice. Fortunately by that time I had discovered watch youtube and ended up throwing that watch in the trash a couple months later.

the difference between normies and seiko shills is that seiko shills love seiko because other enthusiasts like seiko, so the crowd they're trying to appeal to when purchasing a watch is different than a normie. a normie buys a watch to impress others, a seiko shill buys a watch to impress other seiko shills.

I think this applies to the broader watch community as well. Many so called enthusiasts have got to a point where the only reason they continue to buy watches is to appeal to the broader community. If they wanted to impress others they would've stopped at Rolex or something.

Id agree with this. I have several watches from my youth which i dont get rid of because of nostalgia and they dont even have that much sentimental value behind them. At the end of the day these are all just objects, the value they most hold is that which you assign them.
