I have no idea what point you're trying to make (GMT specifically? all watches in general? are you mad at watch people? watch manufacturers? is it the priority that upsets you or the combination or ....?)

With that out of the way, I think it's probably that a proper GMT is actually somewhat complicated, whereas almost all watch movements have a date wheel already there. the date wheel doesn't have a lot of work to do and the requirements are not extreme (as long as it's not perpetual calendar), so by the time they get around to adding the GMT, the rest is already there and it's like well we might as well

>> No.18007238

If you have a need to reference two timezones at once you probably also have a need to reference the date. You probably have some business or travel need based on filling out paperwork or timekeeping for payroll or needing to make adjustments to your travel plans or something. I guess if you're just fucking around on vacation you don't really need it, but if you're traveling for work and linking up with people around the world in a professional capacity it's really good.

The simplest explanation is probably a practical one in the way that GMT watches are made - by modifying day date movements. You probably could make a GMT watch with a date only movement and just not have a date window, but you figure if you're making a watch that's going to need a larger dial and case anyway because you want 24 hour markers and/or a 24 hour rotating bezel to help with tracking additional timezones, you may as well also put the date on there because why not?

Putting the date on that side of the dial is the worst thing you could possibly do(if you're wearing it on your left hand.)

The reason date windows historically were usually at 3 o'clock is because that's the most optimal place to put it to make sure that even if the wearer has a long sleeve shirt or coat on they can still reference the date quickly with minimal effort and without manually pulling the sleeve back. Putting the date in other positions on the right side has grown in popularity as wearing watches with long sleeves has declined in popularity. It's much more common for men to wear short sleeves with watches now, so many of those same men prefer the date at 6 for better vertical symmetry on the dial. I don't personally like that, but I can at least understand it.

Putting the date on the left is just nonsensical by contrast. It serves absolutely no aesthetic or functional purpose and flies in the face of over a hundred of years of watch design just for the sake of being different. It actively makes the watch harder to use than it needs to be by making you look farther down your hand to see the date and making it more likely to be blocked by sleeves or bracelets.

Then I don't get your point. There are bicompax chronographs and tricompax chronographs, and tricompax look like shit if you ask me.
But it's subjective, of course. The superior shape is two subdials (obviously 3 and 9, for the "eyes aeshetic") and then date below the 12, close to the centre.
I would also like to see more quadricompax chronos, along the lines of vintage Universal Geneve, but it takes some badass movement to make decent ones.

Modern chronos are shit. Modern divers also are, unless they're vintage inspired. Field watches are conceptually reddit-tier and usually ugly. Pilot watches are nauseating, too much mess.

Go for vintage chronos, cushion cases, rectangular watches, and of course dress watches without numerals. Problem solved.

I think Seiko should ditch the Grand Seiko line altogether (since no one without an anime body pillow will ever take it seriously) and instead, take all that effort and focus on making all the Prospex and Presage lines and other products better.

Stop making watches with mineral glass cystals. Actually regulate your movements. Install your chapter rings and bezel inserts properly. Make your bracelet clasps have some form of microadjustment. Easy shit.

They'll never do any of that, though, because it would make Grand Seiko look like an even worse value.

But also deep down I wanna flex to may family wen I meet them and they are NPC's that would only recognise Rolex as being a made it watch. Should I go Grand Seiko or an Explorer 36mm which I kind of like.

When the most recent generation debuted back in 2007, the degree of magnetic resistance it had was still pretty noteworthy.
Now, of course, with the proliferation of silicon hairsprings and other new materials, it's trivial to make a watch that's effectively amagnetic.
If/when they bring it back, it will probably be some fully amagnetic titanium thing.

But other than that, how much of a point does it have to have? It's well-made, durable, and looks neat.

Your watch needs to be far enough back on your wrist to not restrict your wrist movement in any way. It actually ends up being fairly far from your wrist bone. I don't know how people stand wearing a watch on the wristbone or touching the back of the hand. First of all it's uncomfortable, second a loose watch swinging around and butting against my hand drives me crazy, third if you fell forward and had to catch yourself on your palms of your watch was around your hand the pressure could injure your wrist or damage your watch or band in some way. It's just retarded and doesn't even look good.

Every single time I look up Grand Seiko watches this company pisses me off. First of all, I have to take your word for it because their website sucks and I can't find the watch you're describing. Second, they are delusional about the specs of the watches I can actually see in weird and baffling ways - They'll brag about the smallness and thinness of a watch in the description and then when you finally find the specs it's 41mm diameter and 11.7mm thick, so they're selling you on the compactness of a watch that is larger than average diameter even if it was a dive watch(it isn't) and it has the thickness of automatic watches that cost a tenth of the price. Then I find this piece of shit...
>Finally, a Grand Seiko under 40mm diameter
>wtf it's manual wind only? Why? I guess to make it thinner?
>Thickness is 11.6
So they shaved a whole 0.1mm off the thickness by using a manual wind movement.
Why the fuck is this still a company that anybody respects?

Hi family,

Hating cellphone zombie culture and being a full blown conspiracy theorist led me to explore the watch rabbit hole.

I found out there are watches that align via radio waves with satelite clocks that align with atomic clocks. Like the clock in your car or fucking cellphone

So i am sort of confused on if i would want this type of watch for someone who wants to be free from mobile phones etc. That watch would put me back on grid in just another way bcs of the radio waves and maybe it would give high EMF fields

But on the other hand i want a watch that is extremelt accurate if not i keep wanting to check a phone or computer out of paranoia that the times is wrong

M8 there are pure Quartz watches that have an accuracy of -+5 seconds per Year and need once every ten years a different battery. Same brand that you posted. Citizen "The Citizen" has one with said movement that is just a quartz movement, no radio waves or whatever. Other alternatives are anything with the 9F movement in it or the 8J81 movement. Those are rated at +-10 seconds per Year. I have a watch with the 8J81 movement, pic related, and it has lost in 2 months exactly 1 second.

as far as I know, they are one of only two brands that actually care about quartz mechanisms and have a few records regarding quartz watches, including most accurate and thinnest watch on the planet. And also IIRC, they were the first to make a watch out of titanium and they still produce the cheapest Titanium watches on the market. Their most desired models though are JDM only, Japanese Domestic Market. And they are not cheap.

I'd say no. The appeal is that they don't need an external source of power and todays mechanical watches can last up to 3 to 5 days (on average, exceptions apply) with one wind up. And that they are still a preserved art and still demand an impressive expertise and craftsmanship to make it right.
