I purchased a Seiko SRPK as a beater a couple months ago. I haven’t been able to wear it for a week so it was sitting in the box. But today when I took it out and tried manually or winding it by shaking it starts and works for a minute or two then stops again. What is wrong with it? Why this and not a breguet? From the looks of it, it uses guilloche and not much else on the dial. Why not the "original" one then that also has some decoration on the casing and much thinner elegant hands, more fitting to a dress watch? It's an honest question, educate me.

There are a lot of iffy circumstances like that which make the whole idea of in house calibers kind of silly and pointless. For every company that actually makes bespoke movements down to the individual component there are probably 6 companies that either source movements from one of the handful of big swiss or Japanese third party movement makers and "modify" the movements (those mods could be as little as simply decorating the movement) and/or they are playing a game of "well, this company owns that company so maybe technically you could argue that the movements between them are in house?????"

I love the idea of affordable watches to bring watches to the people, bit what they say about shitter collecting really is true - the difference in feeling and enjoyment you get from high end watches is vast and if you're buying a dozen or two shitters the money you spent in the end probably could have gotten you maybe 2 or 3 really fucking nice watches you wouldn't mind wearing all the time and still have lots of trouble picking which one you want to wear.

I've done both shitter-hoarding and high-end collecting. They are both fun but in their own ways.

Shitter-hoarding was a constant rush. You get a new watch every month, for the flimsiest of reasons like "I need a green dial watch to pair with this necktie."
High-end collecting was more of an exercise in patience. There's a lot less, "eh, good enough". If a watch isn't perfect, you don't buy it. You spend a lot more time researching pieces, which can be fun.

Ultimately, I gave both up and ended up liquidating my collection. I kept a pair of watches, casual and formal. The two that I liked best and wore most. I still love watches, reading about and talking about them, but anything I buy from here on in will have to be extremely special.

This is what makes buying expensive watches when I don't have a ton of money to spend kind of tricky. I'd like to buy a speedmaster, and I'd like to buy it brand new so that it's really mine in a way, but that's 8k and that's almost a rolex. Then I could go with a tudor bb58 but that feels like kind of a cope watch for a submariner. The middle ground is a used speedmaster at 6k which doesn't feel great but seems like it's the best middle ground at the moment
