i used to wear them at work, fantastic boot for the price but i snapped my fucking ankle one day so jokes on me for getting a Chelsea. They are like most Australian work boots, thick as fuck foam footbed to mimic an anti-fatigue mat and provide good arch support. Leather is half decent, outsole is very pronounced but good traction, its cemented though so no resoling and no problems with construction quality. I still have them sitting in the shed after wearing them for 2 years at work and they are still completely fine with zero maintenance except brushing them off when they got really caked up with gunk.

Get some Solovairs for a less shameful form of docs?

>> No.17991706

>>17991593
I own a par of docs that are +20 years old, from before they took a dive in quality compared to current production, including the vintage and MiE models.
These boots have held pretty well, even if half of the time I've had them they were sitting forgotten in a closet at my parents' basement. At the time I wore them a lot and hard, took then to shows, metal bars, to the mosh pit, etc. _Other than a few scratches they're fine.
That being said, considering the price point, you can have better options in terms of material quality and construction.
The only reasons to buy docs is if you really want the brand (which still has a lot of pull among the skinhead, mod and brit enthusiasts) or the profile that it's quite unique to it and that not even solovair has managed to get right.
I don't regret getting my docs back in the day when I was young and didn't know any better, I still have them and wear them occassionally, but in this day I wouldn't bother with docs.
Just my 2 cents.

Carmina is good with shell and probably the cheapest way to get quality boots made from Horween shell.

Enzo Bonafe is known for his shell boots but it gets more expensive. You can go to Skoak or Lorenzo for EB.

C&J does shell boots too but that's probably even more expensive than the above two. And Edward Green will do it but not a full shell boot, they can do about half of the boot in shell.

Bought 2 pairs last year. Refused to buy blundstone for the past decade+ since they outsourced to china. Reminder that they're ultimately disposable work boots so they're not stand-in's for RMW. I use them for business travel or quick trips out of the house coz I don't have to fiddle with laces. Comfortable, durable and I can slip them on and off at the airport for all those bullshit checks and during the flight for sleep.
I have the non-safety toes in dark brown and "banana suede". I have no complaints. However I saw reported QC issues mostly to do with the sole detaching in parts from the uppers in some spots, or small bubbles in the tread of the chunky sole, leading to a sort of abscess cavity. I don't know how prevalent it is, and mine do not (yet) exhibit this.

Also bought some Mongrels, which are even chunkier and much rounder in the toe. NB: Redback halfsizes are just wider, not actually any longer. I got halves in the redbacks but a fullsize in the mongrel since the mongrel last is plenty wide already so as to accommodate thicker work socks. The halfsize mongrel would've been way too wide for my wide feet.

Impression I get is that the mongrel is slightly better made. The arch support in the inserts is also way more pronounced, though both are easily replaceable. The sole of mine are attached to the uppers in a sort of cupped fashion so I think the aforementioned detaching issue reported about the redbacks doesn't seem like it'd be a worry. If I buy any more of these kinds of disposable aussie work boots, they'll probably be a pair of mongrel's new k9's (pic related) which are trying to look less chunky workbooty and more like that one decent blundstone last. It's still not as nice as that blundstone last, but it's the best alternative at the moment that's AU made. I don't know how this last fits. Mongrel was created by someone in the redback owner's family after a disagreement. An aussie Adidas vs Puma situation.

I would tell you to buy a plain toe Whites MP or Viberg service boot in that case and forget the whole shell thing.

Alternatively, I have saved a picture of Carmina plain toes in Oscar last on Col 8 hatch grain shell. I might order a pair like these one day.

Keep in mind that plain toe shell is a construction challenge of its own and not many makers will attempt it. When pulled, shell has a tendency to create black spots on the toe. Less of an issue with darker colors.

So, I wanted a new pair of boot. I had three requirements
>Made in Australia
>Lace up
>Full grain leather
I wanted something that I could wear anywhere, be very durable and still look decent enough to wear to work.
After searching around, I found the Rossi Mulga. Seemed to tick all the boxes, but after I ordered them I found out they were made in Indonesia since around 2020.
I'll be returning them, but I can't find anything similar. I don't want full on work boots (already have a pair of mongrels) and the blunstones I liked (#1930) don't say anything about being made in Australia.
I could get RM Williams, but they don't really have the style I'm after.
I'm probably going to end up getting Jim Green Rangers even though they're made in south African because they're what I want except for being made in Australia.
Why the fuck is it so hard to find a ~$300 leather boot made here that isn't a work boot?

Grant Stone increased prices to $395 today. I think they were $380 before? So 4% increase. That means with tax they are over $400 now, so they lost the "best boot under 400 dollars" title. Because I have wide feet and these are on the Forest EEE last

I also get a bit of extra leather around the ankles which makes them look fat top down.
It's a very good fit everywhere else though, and the leather is really soft. Probably my most comfortable boots, even more than suede.
The sole was also an experiment, I went with the commando sole made of 'hevea lactae' some kind of natural rubber milk. It's super soft.

They used to be like 100 years ago. These days wearing Iron Rangers as "work" boots is an expensive choice. Modern work boots are just better for comfort, durability, and insulation at a better price. RW does have modern offerings for work boots, but their "heritage" boots are mainly just fashion pieces these days.

Eh, most jobs I worked in that required safety toes didn't really need them outside of OSHA regs and had usually unnecessarily bulky toebox and were very uncomfortable. Guys that typically say the get a lot of use from safety toes are less about the passive protection and more about having something that they can kick with. Actual safety advancements for work boots that I appreciate are the slip-resistant and puncture-resistant soles and, as applicable, oil resistance, electrostatic insulation, and cold weather insulation. You ain't getting that kind of shit from 100yo boots, I tell ya hwat.

not sure whether i want work leather smooth or roughout or waxed flesh
going whites it'd get red dog smooth, nigs probably 64 brown smooth, franks probably walnut or chocolate roughout, or waxed flesh from any maker. W&C latigo also seems awesome but might be more maintenance
also undecided between a honey vibram lugged sole or either the 430 mini lug or vbar. the former is more rugged, the latter two more versatile

Top Hand is Anderson Bean's made in mexico line. They're ~$250ish, about $200 cheaper than ABs, with a lot of the same features, just made in Leon instead of Texas. So the sole is welted and pegged, the boot is fully lined in calfskin, there's a stacked leather sole, etc.

I've only had them for a few days but I'm a fan.

I have a really strange piece of shell cordovan. It came originally kind of matte, it seems it was given no secondary treatment after Horween tanned it. The thing is, it buffed up to a good shine through wearing it for a while, but here's the weird part. Brushing it seems to return it to it's original, more matte state, and it will only get lustrous again after building up a patina through wearing it.

Don't. Durashocks have gone downhill. If you actually plan on wearing such a boot for walking miles of concrete, snow, mud, etc. I recommend to look elsewhere.

I had a pair of the cheap Durashocks that they give to people in military basic training and those lasted me YEARS before they fell apart. When it came time to buy a replacement pair, they redesigned the boot to have a two-piece vamp so that there's a seam right where the toe flexes. In less than a year, the seams split and then so it did on the other boot. They became my shitkickers for the last couple years. As you can see it's getting worse to the point that it looks like the vamp is coming off the rest of the upper.

Also,
>Sidezip
Again, if you actually plan on USING these boots, stay away. Sidezips are for people that work at a desk or a workbench all day.
