Good video, but this ship of Theseus jerking is fucking cringey. It doesn't matter what is the original or what percentage is the original etc. This "pass it on the your children" is dumb anyways and only applies to clocks in actual real life situations. You can't flex with a clock though so nobody cares.

This makes me appreciate cheap watches more because they don't pretend that they can last a lifetime and be cherished by your great-grand-children.
Watches should be appreciated for the moment, not for the fake claims of long lasting luxury items.
They are fragile trinklets, unlike gold rings or even necklaces.

looking to buy a first watch and want a niceish chronograph

should i get a speedmaster for ~4k or splurge a little more and get a tudor big block for ~6k

the tudor is nice, a bit more rare, and I like that it has a vintage flair to it but idk that its worth 2k more

im also looking at an olympic edition speedmaster for 3k for what thats worth, I do like it but it's a little smaller than id like (39mm)

buy an ad faggot
and read an actual book because the story was wrong
this is false equivalency, in the sense that if all the replaced parts are "original" the watch is the same as any other from the assembly line
the whole comparison is stupid because for items nobody really cares, unless it's taxed so the government registers the chassis and the motor of your cars
it's just a good way to illustrate problems with our current understanding of body, brain, mind, self and soul not worrying if the functional watch that is on the wrist the same with new parts or it's actually the box of non-functioning scarps that get thrown away

The big block uses a 7750 which is a reliable movement that is easy to service for every watchmaker. I didn't know they sell so high which is a bit of a bummer for that movement in my opinion. The speedy is classic and a very nice watch depending on the model they can be easy to service as well. Everything after the introduction of coax is basically bound for an in house service.

How are the conditions of each watch? Do they need a service right away or are they already serviced? A chrono service at omega can cost around 1k which should be considered when choosing a used model.

Yeah I guess what I mean is the professional has kept the same look forever, whereas the big block is no longer made so it serves as more of a time capsule which I like, along with the mismatched rolex crown/caseback/bracelet with it still being a tudor watch and all that

but youre right in that the speedy professional is vintage in that its looked the same since forever

>How are the conditions of each watch? Do they need a service right away or are they already serviced? A chrono service at omega can cost around 1k which should be considered when choosing a used model.

I'm going off chrono24 listings so it's hard for me to say. Visually they both look good, the speedmaster more so since its from ~2005 and the big block is from around 1990 but as far as a service goes I'm not sure. I'd probably lean towards needing one more than not just to be safe. The speedy also doesn't come with a steel bracelet which I'd like to have but that's not pressing and I'll probably just buy one later.

>> No.17989152

>>17989138
Original omega bracelets are rather expensive, if you want a real one. Personally I wouldn't trust any claim of service without proof, like an invoice. As the speedy is from before the coax era it shouldn't be a problem to get it serviced for a good price from a good independent watchmaker.
Bracelet + Service might net you around the price for the big block but that one would need a service as well. So it all comes down to your personal preference, although the big block might be a couple of hundreds up to 1k more expensive than the speedy.

People often talk about watches that are too big. But what about watches that are too small? Personally I think if 3 of the bracelet links are on top of your wrist (so not quite like the redditor in pic related but close) the watch will look too small. Excluding the end link of course.

Got it for the exact same reasons about a year ago, it's been my daily driver ever since. Metal is holding up well, so is the crystal surprisingly.

I think it's super comfortable as it's lightweight and pretty slim. The strap is nothing special but more than decent for my use. Steel dial makes it pretty legible (compared to the all black version for example) and the backlight is great to have in the dark.

Would recommend/10

buying a lexus over an audi/benz is like buying a GS over a rolex.

It immediately shows that you care about product quality over brand recognition. German cars are pretty much lease machines and fall apart after the warranty period, meanwhile any lexus will reach 250,000 miles with routine maintenance

although all mineral is shit whether they're on the higher end or the lower end of the mineral spectrum, g-shock crystal don't tend to scratch much because of the pronounced bezel on all of them, you're much more likely to scratch the bezels of any metal g-shock than the crystal, and if you have a resin one you're basically safe until you would completely shatter the crystal by a direct pierce

FRANKFURT: Buying an expensive watch abroad and wearing it during return journey to evade paying Customs duty may prove costlier than one may believe. As per law, it is an act of smuggling even if the time piece is intended for personal use.

An automobile detailing professional, who is under the scanner of the Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt) for smuggling in over a dozen premium watches in the recent past, is an aficionado who bought them for personal use, revealed a preliminary probe by the agency, sources said. The watches have since been seized and will be auctioned off by the agency. The accused is in his thirties.

The accused smuggled in the watches during several overseas trips undertaken by him owing to his enthusiasm for premium watches, as a part of his hobby, said sources in the BZSt.

Most of the watches seized by the BZSt are ‘luxury’ watches having exceptionally high value, said sources.

The BZSt officials said that acting on an anonymous tip, a team of the agency arrested the accused at Flughafen Frankfurt Main (FRA) on his arrival from Tokyo, Japan. At the time of his arrest, the accused was allegedly carrying a swiss made Rolex wristwatch and a “very expensive japanese Seiko wristwatch” on each of his wrists, which had not been declared before Customs to avoid paying the duty, said the agency. The accused was arrested by the BZSt.

After questioning the accused, the DRI team had carried out a search of his residence located above an upscale brothel in the Central German Metropolitan Region. A Frankfurt court subsequently released the accused on bail.

The search yielded a virtual trove of 11 more high-end watches of various premium brands he had purportedly smuggled into the country during several overseas trips.

The accused claimed during his questioning that he would wear the watches while smuggling them in and insisted they were old and used articles, to evade the payment of 17.5% customs duties plus VAT, sources said.

Fun!

>>17989119
Agreed; I see it slightly differently but in the same direction. To me, 'passing it on to the next generation' is just an attempt at justifying buying it in the first place. Given that my 321 came from a father who's son didn't want it, I've had direct experience in that realm regarding intent vs. result. Bottom line is that we buy these things for ourselves, we enjoy them ourselves, and after we're dead, it won't matter to us.

>>17989122
Go to an authorized dealer to try on the Speedy; you'll either love it or not, and that should tip the needle. Is the Tudor in the current lineup? (sorry, don't know Tudors at all) If so, try it on too, and if not, then try on something similar. Speedies hold their true-market value rather well, so if you buy one second-hand for 4k, you should be able to sell it for 4k if you don't mess with it. Olympic editions seem to be very volatile; it all depends on if you really love the watch or not. They don't tend to hold value well. Good luck!

>>17989123
It does matter given that he had Omega service it. The most important part that they replaced was the dial; by doing so, the value of the watch dropped significantly. In vintage circles, no one really cares it the movement has replacement parts (assuming those are original manufacturer and correct for the movement). They do care if the outer aesthetic is altered (everything from polishing to dial and handset replacement). So it's rather sad, actually. His watch is still 'his' watch, but it's now less valuable than it was before.

I really like it, but it's in the same 'bucket list' as other co-axials that I like...I'm simply scared to own them because I don't have a trusty watchmaker who can work on them. My own watchmaker is getting old enough now that I think I may have to get someone new, so I don't want to get anything with co-ax unless my watchmaker has an Omega account for parts. I love the proportions of the dial though, specifically the hand length, hour marker length, and the pie-pan proportions. Excellent watch, ugly as shit bracelet. Blue is better than the white.

Here's what you should do. Unironically.

Go to a really nice watch shop. Once that carries high end brands. Rolex, Cartier, etc. I know you're not going to buy one, but try those watches on. Get a feel for them. Look how nicely they're made.
Then get your hands on a Seiko and you'll notice it's junk you won't want to waste your money on. You'll realize you're better off with a bare wrist and saving your money.

I made that mistake when I was younger. I consooomed tons of cheap ass watches, microbrands, Japanese watches, all sorts of crap. When I was 30 a bought my first Rolex, I sat down and did a little math. I realized that I could have had that Rolex five years earlier if I had exercised a little impulse control and self-respect and saved my money until I bought the watch I actually wanted, not the watch I wanted right now.

Unfortunately the question isn't necessarily if you can afford it so much as if an AD will sell one to you. You want to pay retail because the secondary market prices are even more retarded but depending on how tight fisted and/or destitute and/or degenerate your local ADs are they literally might not sell you a watch for years even if you have the money. You can tell them straight up with bank statements as proof that you have millions of dollars in the bank and money is no object and you want to buy a daytona, if you have no purchase history with them they'll almost definitely tell you no either because they literally can't get one or because they have 3 other established customers that have already bought thousands of dollars worth of stuff still waiting to get one.

You're overthinking it. The price tag is to let people know what the model costs. Rolex started insisting their ADs carry floor models during the height of the hype, since it was embarassing to see all those pics of completely empty cases.
They even started providing floor models that didn't come with a movement installed.

>People shit on Rolex but they forget the “good” models from omega like the snoopy etc are unobtainable. Rolex you can get from an ad if you’re patient enough

This. Rolex simply cannot make enough watches to satisfy demand, though, this situation is changing with the hype dying down and their new factory coming online. You can't say Rolex isn't trying.
Rolex also doesn't do limited editions like Omega does. Omega is sneaky, though, in that they don't always say their limited editions are limited. (Saying something is limited pisses people off who rightly assume all the watches will go to VIPs and flippers.) The Silver Snoopy, for example, is a "regular production model" they just don't produce very many so getting one is difficult.

Rolex Explorer I (36mm) vs Tudor Black Bay 54.
Just picked up the Tudor a couple days ago. I wanted a midsize diver. I like the old Subs but the last few generations of Sub have been too big and blocky for my taste.

You can see they're pretty similar in size but the Explorer wears MUCH smaller. The 19mm lug width of the Explorer and the bracelet that tapers to a 14mm clasp feels tiny compared to the older 36mm Explorers. They feel about the same in terms of thickness. The Explorer bracelet is better all around but the BB54 now has an on-the-fly microadjust clasp so it's pretty good too.

I think the BB54's dial is more interesting, it's a slightly domed, dark gray sunburst like the Blancpain Bathyscape. The Explorer, of course, has just a regular, glossy black.
I do like that Tudor has stopped, or at least toned down the use of the faux patina lume. The gold surrounds make it look more yellowish, but they're basically the same color.

I like that the Black Bay still has a lug bevel like old Rolexes used to have. The Explorer (and all modern Rolexes) disappoint me in that regard.)

In terms of finishing, though, both look perfect. No swirls or wobbles in the polishing. The brushing is all uniform. No squeaks or rattles in the bracelets. The crowns both wind smoothly. The Rolex is just slightly better in all regards.
In terms of feel, the brushing on the Explorer feels slightly finer when you run your thumbnail across it. The BB54 feels maybe a little coarser, more like my Grand Seiko. Perhaps it has something to do with the 904L steel vs 316L steel.

Which Tudor do you have?

This one.
I love the feel of the ceramic. And I daily it because it is essentially unscratchable. The crown, like you mentioned, is also probably the best one out of all my watches. It simply feels great overall. Only the edges are polished and that gives it enough style to complement the look. I just wosh that the edges where a tiny bit rounder.
And good thing you mentioned your GS because, the dial and finoshing on my GS is simply so much better that I avoid comparing them.

I have been thinking about geeting pic related, I think it looks really nice.
It's not too expensive and I think it suits my style nicely but my friend has told me that it's too feminine and that I should at least get it with a silver rim. I am not too sure.
Thoughts?

That date window seems pretty poorly cut and the far inboard placement on the dial means they're using a movement that's too small for the watch.
The numerals at the indices are also bad, like they were placed there to assist Americans in telling the time.
Gold-tone watches are tacky too. If there's a steel option, that's a better buy.

I have seen similar watches use black instead of white but I do prefer the white. In addition, the date window would also look odd on black in my opinion

Cost from Omega to service a regular three-hander is currently around 550-600 USD.
Cost of a chrono is now a whopping 900 USD.

Expensive? Sure. But it's only once every ten years or so (if you wear the watch every day) and it's a luxury product. Upkeep is going to be more expensive for no good reason.
Is like people buying Ferraris and being shocked at the poor fuel economy.

bitter is the new cope and seethe

>> No.17990822 [DELETED]

Once upon a time on /fa/, the fashion board of 4chan, there dwelled a bitter and envious Anon. His heart burned with jealousy at the sight of others flaunting their beautiful watches on the long-lasting watch thread, known as /wt/.
Filled with spite, he dedicated an excessive amount of time and effort to ruin the fun for everyone else. He replied to every watch he saw, calling them mere "shitters," as if his words could tarnish their elegance.
He became infamous across the board, recognized for his relentless reporting of anything he didn't like. He was known as the living embodiment of bitterness, lurking 24/7, waiting for Citizen watches to be posted so he could mock them, or a whore that poses with Seikos that he would seethe over. The community baptized him as Bitteranon.
He knew that his bitterness stemmed from a deeper root. It was whispered among Anons that his sole timepiece was a cheap Casio, renowned for its affordability. He couldn't cope with others possessing Grand Seikos, Rolexes and even Citizens
One fateful day, Bitteranon found his moment for ridicule, spotting a post from Omegachad. Seizing the opportunity, he unleashed his bitter insults onto his watches, savoring the satisfaction of his jealousy momentarily quelled.
However, in the midst of his triumphant gloating, he unknowingly revealed something that he shoudln't.
He accidentally confessed that he was unable to engage in the pleasures of the flesh with a prostitute. It became apparent that his bitterness towards Whoretadellos lifestyle and Omegadrunks watches was a mere facade, a mask for deep-seated insecurities.
Laughter reverberated through /wt/, drowning out Bitteranon's words. He had unwittingly exposed himself, unveiling his true motives to the merciless horde. No longer was he the bitterwarrior, but a pitiable figure.
Even as he try to remain anonymous, he is isntantly recognized by his bitterness and writing style.
His story continues to this day. Stay Tuned.

I'm a heavy diesel mechanic. What's a nice stainless steel (inc. bracelet) automatic watch I could beat the shit out of at work and at home and just wear to death? The dream is a nice plain Explorer one day but I'm not knowledgeable and would love to hear other options in that range or cheaper.
