There is a "black trad" style that includes black performers, jazz musicians, and HBCU types. If you are white, you'd have to look into how original hipsters dressed and see if you can meld that together if you really want to make a costume out of it. Prep/Ivy students who got into jazz in the 40s/50s likely didn't dress any different for it.

You’re not the only one. I’m not an Ivy dresser but these posters clearly haven’t familiarised themselves with the mode. The collar roll is the only good thing about the first photo. The suit jacket isn’t 3/2 roll and the belt and tie are too wide.

Anons seem to think wearing anything remotely formal = Ivy. I’d recommend they read ivy-style.com (especially the comments; the readers know their stuff) and look at Take Ivy photos.

Overall, as a general rule of thumb, you’re along the right lines if you’re wearing fabrics that are durable, expensive, tactile and look worn-in. Anything shiny, cheap and new makes you look like an estate agent. Then start to get the details down and go from there.

Not an expert though so take this with a pinch of salt.

Nah it's one of the most basic rules of wearing a suit. What you effay fags don't understand is that when you dress like this you are identifying yourself with the upper class but you get outed as a larper when you break these unwritten rules. Styles come and go but it's analogous to restaurant eating- the food may change but if you don't know which set of cutlery to use with each course you have been filtered and marked as new money low class. Anyone with taste will spot you from a mile away!

Go for it if you you think it looks good but keep it in mind if you go to a function that isn't your step dad's wedding.

Also maybe worth noting that this is from a British perspective; Americans can't be upper class so disregard this advice if you're a burger.

My suit is a sack 3/2, j.press, as is the coat in picrel (albeit this one is a bit long). I purchased a few 60's era ties earlier in the year but wearing them made me look like a larper from a bygone era in a bad way. Idk what you're talking about regarding belt thickness, and even if it is the case no one in the real world pays attention to that shit in the first place. Doesn't make the fit any less flattering anyway. I agree with you that the comments on ivy-style are insightful. Lets see your fit?

Sorry, I meant the collar tip (/collar wings?) not sure what the exact terminology is in English.
It is too long, so your proportions are off. I personally always go with the point of the collar being at about the halfway point of the collar and upper most button. Your shirt has this aswell, but fewer buttons, so it should ideally at about 1/3 the distance, so a bit further upward.
You can see this very well in the first image, there is a lot of room between the collar tip/wing and the tie, despite your collar being somewhat narrow.
I hope this shitty drawing helps.

I think what you're trying to describe is a collar role? picrel. It's a feature of this type of shirt and the shirts are made this way intentionally. It's an American style of shirt. I can understand why some may find it distasteful, but I quite enjoy it.

I stand corrected regarding the 3/2 buttons.

>No one in the real world
And no one in the real world pays attention to collar roll. Ivy Style aficionados dress for themselves as well as other people. Else why don’t you buy Dolce & Gabbana or whatever the hottest new fashion label is, or wear a slim-fitting suit like everyone does when they wear suits? You’re clearly aspiring to an ideal, and you’re very nearly there when it comes to attaining it, so don’t fucking discount valid (in my opinion) criticisms of your outfits. I’ll say it again: your belt is too wide and thick and the buckle is too shiny. Get rid. It’s very simple and cheap advice

Likewise, your repp tie with the navy suit was too wide and matchy. As long as you’re trying to be Ivy, wear a different tie. Simple

The OPH also lists records a preppy should have in his dorm room, I recall "Exile On Main Street" by the Rolling Stones (great album) being among them. In the 50s/60s Ivy era they were big on the jazz of the time. Swing music like Glenn Miller, classical music, classic rock, yacht rock, and '80s pop all fit the preppy vibe as well, IMO.

I appreciate the compliment and advice, I know to switch up the tie next time, just don't have any better ones. Am I stuck with trying to find 60's era ties on etsy / ebay or is there a "modern" company that makes more slim ties? Like I said the ones I had in the past just looked too odd.
Regarding belts, I have never paid much attention to them and how they influence and flatter an outfit and individual. I care more about shirts / coats / trousers and how they appear / fit. I'll find some old pictures and study up I guess, like you said it's a small thing to change and probably for the better.

Then you’ve done the hard part. Your sport coat and shirt are nicer than anything I have in my wardrobe. Seems a shame to me to go through all that trouble and cost only to disregard the smaller things, which do detract from a look. God is in the details!

true. I'm not a fan of polos so for warmer climes I was thinking of a linen sports jacket, or just a french tucked slight oversize long sleeve t-shirt. I'm in the north of the UK so it rarely gets too hot for trousers.

The neck on your shirt is a kinda big, if you do neck / back exercises in the gym you can gain an inch in a month or two. Also iron the collar of your shirt, it will give it a bit of a roll. I like the slimmer tie but I'm not sure how I feel about the pattern. First time I've seen anything like that but it does match your outfit overall. The grey / blue shirt combo always works well, and the suit seems to have good proportions in relation to your body.

All alligator is not created equal. When it comes to alligator anything you want large scales and some degree of symmetry. I would not purchase one online as each belt will be very different. It's up to you if you want shiny or matte. I prefer matte as shiny alligator screams 80s/90s and is a very dated look (you can blame luxury watchmakers for that).

In its purest form, a teenage desire for quality pieces and a class aesthetic surrounding it, without understanding that mentality and thus LARPing and/or buying shitty pieces to approximate it. A lot of this stuff is what I might previously describe as Tumblresque, where teenagers look at something that looks good, worn and carried by usually edgier characters in media, and want to emulate it.

In practicality and relation to /tip/, I'd say it's better than nothing -- I'd respect you for wearing flannel wool trousers but think wearing it so monochromatically with black, brown, gray falls into more of a uniform (like "Old Money Aesthetic") than even my prep school uniform.

Picrel, you can be darker and edgier but still in the /tip/ paradigm. But trad isn't about this vibe because there are higher things in life to care about, ivy has bigger things to actually do, and prep is too busy having fun.

What's going on with your arms that you need to shorten the sleeve by 5cm? There is no easier way than your solution, though. Removing the sleeve, shortening it at the shoulder and reattaching it will take you considerably longer and the sleeve will be tighter at the shoulder. Shortening at the cuff would take you about as long, and bears the problem that you shorten the slit at the placket, too. You could turn back the cuff, but it won't look like a usual french cuff then.

its not a bot thing and if its a forced meme nobody finds it funny. what it is is an actual schizophrenic stalker creep obsessively tracking down every one of my posts and calling me a pedo/balding/child molester and saying I'm from marlow even though I'm not, which makes me wonder where the line is between him making shit up to drag me or an earnest mission to deliver retribution for crimes he's actually convinced I've done, seemingly oblivious to the fact that at this point everybody just thinks he's a fucking lunatic and also annoying (especially considering he's the one who shits up the catalog with my pics as troll threads).
at this point I just report his posts on sight, and they get deleted but he justs posts again immediately after.
I honestly hope he gets permabanned from 4chan for his own mental health, I don't know what drives someone to obsessively harass a random autist like this but its definitely not a product of a stable mind. Seeing his posts upsets me, but not because it's mean, its more like getting prodded for money by the same unwashed bum day after day, or walking past some druggie/retard yelling incoherently in public, just being aggressively confronted with the fact there are people out there on a level of existence so wretched and low it's almost alien, and worse, they've for whatever reason decided to make it your problem. It's saddening, really.
I hope he gets the help he needs. Short of that, I hope I at least don't have to see his posts. It's honestly frustrating that it's nearly the only response any of my posts get anymore, I mean /tip/ has been pretty antagonistic to me in the past but I'd gladly take a wall of text from a disgruntled /tip/ster over this schizos canned responses any day, it's just so boring.

oh goddammit i shot myself in the foot

here i was trying to set up a joke on myself with the punchline being the tiny girly sewing machine, and then i went and ruined the joke by then ranting about my stalker instead of leaving any time for people to actually laugh at it, instantly souring the mood, once again reminding people why they hate me.
I know im an attention seeking faggot but i at least try to redeem myself by being funny, but i guess i failed on even that front. thats what really gets to me, not the mean comments, not the uninformed assertions about my life, no its really that i had a joke to tell, i told it, and then i let one heckler ruin the bit.
sorry guys. I realized I was a clown so I least wanted to be one on purpose, so then i could at least be in on the joke, but i managed to fuck even that up.

Cant even be a good goddamn clown, nobodys laughing, nobody is even here to laugh, everybodys just tired and bitter and vindictive, including even a clown like me, thats the worst part.

I see practically no headwear in my /tip/ folder except for a couple ball caps and then one of those paperboy larp hats. Honestly, if it's cold enough to need a hat to stay warm just wear whatever you like. That's my 2 cents.

Also I'm already bored and ready to go back to school despite only being 1 week in to a month long break.

Corduroy or gold-style ballcap. Knit beanie like picrel. Or a barbour/toggel/whatever coat with the hood up.

I just bought this herringbone scarf, not sure about it. I want another but I'm not sure what I can get. I'd like something more unusual looking but not crazy.

I have a single black merino wool beanie and a cashmere wool watch or fisherman’s cap. If it’s really that cold, I’ll use the former for sort of casual or active wear and the former if for less casual. A fisherman’s cap and a peacoat looks pretty nice actually.

What’s your opinion on fleeces? They’re almost an Ivy staple at this point even though they’re not that style at all. I just can’t find any that don’t suck and aren’t Patagonia.

You gotta pay for Mark Cho's new watch collection somehow. There's a styleforum thread that exposes Drake's overpricing. When you buy directly from the maker of their clothes it's more than half price.

I see they’re wool. I just buy the synthetic stuff now. Obviously, it’s not as nice but the wool stuff is so horrendously overpriced and the point is to be warm and comfy anyway. I have one with Polartec fleece that I wear all the time.

I need some loafer recommendations. I used to love Allen Edmonds but recently I dislike the colors and silhouettes. I’m not sure if they changed them or what, but I need to find a new brand to auto-buy loafers from like you buy groceries.

Feel free to call them all of those things but they're still a prep staple. I love mine, have a vintage 1995 one.

Fair enough, but the name would probably be worthless for an online degree here in the states. In fact, it’s arguably worse than schools with robust online programs like Penn State. Plenty of military get online degrees from Penn State and use it for high end jobs, but it’s justified because they’re military. For everyone else, online degrees are practically worthless. It doesn’t matter if they’re from Harvard or Mississippi State.

Now is my time to ask my /tip/ question then.
I never really fancied jewelry and especially gold.
Only wearing a watch when I go out and most of the time it's either whitegold or ss. But recently I've been enamoured with the golden Tank Louis, the silver shininess of my Tank Solo just doesn't do it anymore.

Whats your and/or /tip/s opinion on rose/yellow gold (watches)?

Like I said, not a fan of rings and necklaces but I think something like pic related on a darkbrown leather should be fine.

>> No.17951214

>>17951200
My tank is rose gold and the 1815 is yellow gold for reference. Cartier's rose gold is pretty muted compared to a brand like Rolex which uses a different formula. Rose vs yellow really comes down to preference. Unless you're deep in the weeds it's hard to notice the difference especially on a small watch like a tank.
