Today's trade haul. The real score is the Ray, which looks like it was worn maybe three times, and has box, tag, and rubber strap.

Thing is I don't like the strap too much. Any ideas? I don't wanna just NATO it.

The Seiko Kinetic I'm thinking whether I should get a new capacitor, or try to swap the movement our and convert it to normal battery quartz, because honestly autoquartz is kind of a shit tech. The Kinetic also has its factory bracelet, but the guy I traded it with has to find the endlinks for it.

it was between this and the 5227 as far as top replicas go. figured the 5296 was more true to the original ref 96.

6119 you posted is the truest to the original form in the current calatrava lineup, but it is too big at 39mm and is a poor attempt at integrating too many design features. it is also too expensive for what it is.

They're still doing a lot, but since the big-watch trend is starting to shift, the designs are adapting. Smaller cases, less water resistance, women's models, etc. I stop by my local Panerai boutique once in a while, and it seems they're doing okay (i.e. still selling watches).

>>17936407
They're great, but you need a watchmaker to bring them back to life if you don't want to pay absurd amounts. They should be flyback chronos, which are slightly more complicated from this era and parts may not be easily available. I ask because it's the complete opposite of my own experience with RSC.

I had my father's 1979 Datejust serviced as a gift. It had started to run poorly since it hadn't been serviced in 30 years and never by Rolex themselves.
Rolex took it in and agreed to service it.
About two weeks later, they called me and said "There are some non-Rolex parts in there. We'll be replacing them. I asked which parts, they said it was the crystal, the handset and one of the bracelet links."
Two weeks after that, they called me to get the watch back, all serviced and with the usual one-year warranty on the work.

I don’t sit in front of the screen F5ing every second hoping to get (you)s. And what I said isn’t false, RSC experience differs for everyone but in general they won’t touch your watch if major parts have been changed with after market ones. A crystal is another matter, if you shatter/cracked the crystal on a vintage, Rolex would want you to get it replace as soon as possible to prevent moisture and debris from entering the movement. This doesn’t apply for newer watches since the crystal is laminated.

I was told that servicing anything fifty years or younger is feasible, but after that there's a matter of parts availability so there can be no guarantees. The watch itself probably matters, as well, like if it's a common watch like an OP, DJ or Sub, or a particularly rare watch like a star-dial 6062.

Bruce Willis wore a TAG-Heuer 3000 on the other hand (pun not intended). Pic is the original prop watch. In DH2 the baddies wore TAG-Heuer 2000's.

Speaking of props, the M92 Beretta is an iconic 80's-90's action hero gun, because of movies like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon. But actually for both movies Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson used the same exact prop gun. Die Hard was a later movie, and for that it was modified for better left-hand use, with an extended mag release and slide release.

I don't mind tool-watches being beat to shit as long as they're not "destroyed", i.e. they don't have entire dial portions missing or illegible, or a case so pitted it looks like it came from the bottom of a lake. Like pic is still within acceptable to me, but naturally I wouldn't mind better.

Maybe I'll just say fuck it and get a Seagull. Whatever manufacturing hiccups it will have I'll just iron out in my shop. With chinks it's mostly going to be inadequate oiling anyway.

why of course, an independent fully in-house brand like Raketa will always command higher prices than a made in China swatch-group owned brand that's gone in the gutter, like Omega
and the patina on grandpa's Never Restored True Vintage Galaxy Dial Raketa will obviously bring the price up by quite a bit too. I'm sure the super thick 20+ micron gold plating has held up quite nicely as well, a standard the Swiss could never quite live up to...

Christmas is always busy, but no complaints. How are you doing, CitizenChad?

Aside from my 0100 and Nighthawk, and your Stiletto, I honestly don't look at Citizen. I had briefly looked hard at the new mechanical movement they produced, but these days nothing at all tickles my fancy. I've had a love-hate relationship with Citizen; sometimes I think they get their design dead-on, but most of the time there always seems to be a 'growth' somewhere.

Today it's the work pair as usual, but while I was putting up the tree, the Mark40 was kicking ass.

Have a good one, Fren.

>>17936642
I'd say there's no reason not to try to get a great vintage if you are up to getting it running well. From what I understand, the older movements are still better in reliability than the Seagull, and if you're going to have the aviation watch at all, then you should have the fly-back capability. I don't think the Seagull does that, or at least, the Venus movement they use in every microbrand doesn't. Good luck!

Off again Frens. Be excellent to each other!

It's a deliberately polarizing design. The hands are strange, the nipple dial is strange, along with the huge amount of empty space on the dial. I think Blancpain did this because the original Bathyscaphe has been so frequently copied that they felt they could go in a completely new direction.
For example, the Seiko 62MAS, the first Seiko diver, is just a straight copy of the Bathyscaphe of the time.

I guess they sell pretty well, though, for a company that doesn't make a lot of watches per year.

Same. It's great on paper. I was wondering if I'm just so conditioned to think of a dive watch as being something like a Rolex Sub that anything that looks different looks wrong.

But as a watch, though, it's gorgeous. The movement was really nicely finished, all the indices were nicely polished, the dial's dome and sunburst gives it so much depth. It's just so...weird.

>The vintage ones are nice but keep in mind servicing can be expensive.
care to elaborate? why would it be expensive? i'd assume that one trip to the watchmaker for a few hundred dollars is mandatory after buying. but that doesn't seem "expensive" at all.

unless the 44KS is different? I'd have thought that the 45KS would be harder to maintain due to being an early hi-beat.

Parts. Best would be to buy another one that's in bad condition but with an ok movement so if/when something goes erong you can source them with ease and have peace of mind for the rest of your life. Once you get the watch properly serviced and regulated it should be very accurate and you can wear it without a care in the world.

>Phoenix

Phoenix supposed to be hardcore mil-spec, like British MOD supplier, and they're pretty good, but they're probably the stiffest, most uncomfortable NATO I have.

So anyway thoughts? Any color recommendations? Saw a Tudor rep today, should I get a strap with the Tudor-style fabric?
