It's a cool reference to their historic marine chronometers, but they look huge on the wrist. 42mm is wearable, but the bright white dial and narrow bezel makes it look larger.

Because they have a lot of play between all of the elements so they can follow the contours of your wrist. There's a little bit of twisting possible. It's the same reason that a well broken-in Jubilee bracelet is so comfortable.

Hey lads what's up?
I am just dropping by to say that, ever since I started this trip, my credor gained 2 seconds. That's 2 seconds in one week on a 20 year old watch with no service history. My GS gained half a second in 3 weeks but that one is essentially a quartz so.it doesn't coint.
Which confirms again my theory that Seiko doesn't care about Seiko. All their good stuff and good engineering is reserved only for GS and Credor. Reminder that all 3 of my 6R35 movements gain or lose 60-90 seconds a day. Only after regulating my presage, did it fall within spec with its +15 per day.
So yeah, Seiko only raised their recent prices to go upmarket but didn't do anything on the qc department

Imagine falling for the complications meme.

Face it retards, complications are
>ugly
If you think a clustered dial or a date window look good then you have no taste.
>not that impressive
All the work is done by computers and machines now. Even shit tier brands like Baume & Mercier know how to make a perpetual calendar.
>a fucking pain to service
Enjoy paying 3k to have your moonphase stainless steel JLC serviced.
>useless
The only one that is vaguely useful is date, which you need to be reminded of what...? 5 or 6 times times a year at best? Not worth it considering how a date window makes your watch look ugly. If you ACTUALLY NEED a complicated watch for whatever reason, just buy something disposable like a Casio or an Apple Watch. It'll be way cheaper and more suited for your lifestyle.

2 OR 3 HANDS (SMALL SECOND ONLY), GOLD CASE, SMALL DIAMETER, VINTAGE OR VINTAGE INSPIRED.
That's it.

>If, hypothetically, only something like a Cartier Tank LC is a dress watch, then when is it appropriate to wear something like an ALS Lange 1?

Going by "tradition" for whatever that's worth.
The small, gold, uncomplicated watch is for formal wear e.g. black tie and up.
A larger, complicated watch like the Lange 1 or a perpetual calendar is appropriate for informal wear, e.g. business suit. Anything above casual wear.
For casual wear, a sports watch is fine, obviously.

More realistically, though, since so few men in western countries, even wealthy men, dress in formal wear anymore, the old rules about dress watches no longer apply.
Basically as long as it's not obviously a sports watch, anything is a "dress watch" now.

For whatever reason Rolex just left the Milgauss stagnant for a long time. Maybe it was low sales figures or something else but it quickly got surpassed badly by anti-magnetic developments from many other brands. The reality is very few people need a watch with more anti-magnetism than what the Milgauss offered, but it's a bad look when they make this hyper specialized watch that is actually just shit at what it was designed to do in comparison to what other brands were offering. It would kind of be like if the Sea-Dweller was actually only 200m water resistant, it just wouldn't really make sense.

is right, it might not happen. Although, people probably care about the antimagnetic properties even less than they do about WR of their diver and buy it for the looks alone. Of course with diver's 200m is the minimum, so perhaps these antimagnetic watches could have some minimum baseline as well, and once that is met, it's a non-issue. The Sea-Dwellers and Deep Seas etc are mainly marketing stunts anyway, no one needs 8000m WR, nor do they need 1 billion gauss worth of antimagetism, you'd think Mil Gauss is enough.

You make a good point that many other companies make watches that are more anti-magnetic and can manage to do so with clear casebacks. If Rolex were to re-release the Milgauss, they'd keep the name out of tradition, but the new watch would be completely amagnetic.

But as it was, it was an unpopular watch that required a unique case and crystal. Rolex probably decided they'd be better off taking that manufacturing capacity on making more of the popular, in-demand watches.

>> No.17936237

In the 50s when the Milgauss was introduced resistance to 1000 gauss was a lot. Now all Omega master co-axial movements are resistant to 15000+ gauss. I'm pretty sure the latest Milgauss was resistant to a lot more than 1000 gauss but I'm not sure by how much. It's all sort of pointless stat-wanking anyway BUT Rolex has been in an arms-race with Omega over depth rating (see the ongoing ultradeep vs deep sea challenge watches). I think advances in anti-magnetic technology have largely made the Milgauss irrelevant in the modern watchmaking landscape. I do hope they bring it back though because it was one of the only interesting modern Rolex watches in my opinion.
