/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - HORSE HIDE EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them an

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

TLB does, and imo is better value if you want a dress shoe.
Until last year TLB did lasted trees for like 40€ an absolute steal.

I did lasted trees on these Bonafe loafers which was like 150€ just for the trees or something ridiculous like that.

They are nothing like TLB lasted trees, it's an extremely tight fit. There's not even a spare milimeter anywhere.

Anyway it does feel a bit of a scam to pay so much for trees but when you already pay so much for shoes it feels bad not to get the lasted trees too.

Got first pair of boots from OSB. On black Friday sale. They feel great. I'm hooked on boots now. Anyone have other recommendations for boots with a similar last. The wide toe box fits perfect and desu I hate that cramped pointy look I see on some of the other boot brands. I want clown shoes basically.

I received my Alden 986 loafers seconds in the mail today

As far as I can tell, this is the only flaw, a little nick near the edge but it doesn't hit the stitching. Everything else looks clean, symmetrical, and within specs.
The only other potential flaw I was able to spot is near the little nick, on the shell itself, there are a few, super-tiny, pinpoint-like bumps(?) from the leather. I tried to capture these in the photo but couldn't -- they're that small and very few of them. I can't imagine these are of any consequence but this is my first shell so if anyone knows what this is and if this is worth , I'd love to know.

Overall, I'm very happy. $600 all-in cost vs $886 retail for first-quality

On the subject of EU resoles, Skoak recently posted a photo of this pair of black captoe oxfords made by St Crispins in 1994 (30 years ago) back from a factory resole.

But St Crispins are like 1400€ a pair.

Also imagine making a shoe like this in Romania in 1994. Five years after Ceausescu.

this guy resoles vibergs in europe https://www.schuhgott.de, there's also a bunch of bespoke makers in my city that do resoles, i wouldn't be surprised if they can resole vibergs properly (i.e stitching through the same holes)

Europe is the land of leather footwear and you need 3 years of study to call yourself one, it's ridiculous you believe nobody can do a stitchdown sole replacement. Sure it's not what they do all day long but they can do it.

When resoling, is it possible to switch to a storm welt design or vice versa?
I guess going from normal to storm welt requires replacing the entire welt since it's already been trimmed tight

>> No.17935268

>>17935203
yes, that is why buying ~$300 entry level resolable boots, because someone else told you resolable=quality, is just silly
the reddit mindset of buying based on a spec sheet, the cheapest GYW boot possible is completely misguided
either you buy something that makes sense and is worth investing in a resole or just buy cemented shit and throw it away after a couple of years like you're going to do anyway with your thursdays

On leather soles I've heard it's when you can press down on them and it feels soft and mushy.
On rubber soles I guess it'll be obvious when you wear down the treads.

I don't think it's even possible to wear down dainite. As shitty as it is, the thing is indestructible. But unless the maker carves a channel for the stitching, it will wear down.

Also, does anyone have experience with TLB's new "Madison" last?
It's round(er) and I think meant to imitate C&J's rounded lasts for some more casual looking models like an Islay or Coniston clone.

And they all come unhemmed so there's a huge amount of extra fabric for your tailor to hem or cuff (or both).

So let me get this straight.
You fags insist on spending $500+ on boots because they are "repairable" and that means you can keep them for a decade plus. But the boots on average need repairing after just a few years, and the repairs often cost upwards of $300?
So what's the advantage over buying $100-$200 boots you can just wear for a couple years then throw away?
These $500+ boots don't look any better than cheaper boots. In fact they are often considerably uglier.
