That is true, but it doesn't change the fact that Seiko is asking 2x the price for the same watch.

For example, the first Grand Seiko I ever bought was a simple 9F 3-hand and date. It cost me a little over 900 dollars' equivalent in JPY. At the time I thought, "Wow, this is really well-made. What a bargain!" Now the exact same watch is 2600 dollars. They made no change. They're just hoping that people will think more expensive = more better.

At the higher price ranges, its even worse. They're trying to position, via price, their mechanical diver to be the equivalent of a Submariner, when it's much closer to Tudor or Omega in terms of overall quality.

Sometimes it's OmegaDrunk samefagging for attention and for simps to whiteknight him.
Other times it's anyone who dares to criticize an expensive watch, even mildly, since no one wants to hear that the expensive watch they just bought isn't universally loved.

The DJ is 12mm. The WB is 11.7.
It's marginal, but remember that the WB has a slightly domed saphire while the DJ's saphire is completely flat.
So it'll be visually thinner than the DJ as well as being thinner on paper.

>>17927563
>every credor is 10 or sub 10mm
Credor is more of a fancy luxury brand, while watches like the White Birch, Datejust, AT, ... are full-on "sports watches".
The thinner the movement, the less robust it is.

Even Patek owners admit that Patek's finishing isn't up to par compared to ALS and others.

Grand Seiko owners? No.

I don't need lume, I have electric lights.

Hey anons, I'd like to get a blue-dial SS Rolex Datejust as a daily (or at least every-other-dayly)
is smooth + oyster better than fluted + jubilee for this?

desu I prefer fluted + jubilee, but think smooth + oyster would work better as a daily.

that's the dj2 tho not the newer dj41, look at how fat the case it, how fat the baton markers are, how fat everything is holy shit
the new 41 also has a fuck huge bezel still
36 is pure class, 41 is huge as fuck
on the other hand, 36 looks tiny as fuck on some people and 41 looks appropriate on some
36mm has the same size dial as 40mm sports models
so the 41 is fucking larger
smooth+oyster is cuck tier (oyster perpetual tier, explorer1 tier)
jubilee+fluted 36, in yellow two tone with champagne or white dial, to become paul allen
or, jubilee+fluted 36 in ss with silver dial for that monchromatic clean look (kinda based ngl), or blue/green dials (higher resale I guess)
the dj has alot of possible combos desu

Omega made those dials the same way Journe does: careful build up of layers of blue lacquer over a polished metal plate.

In Journe's case, it's gold, in Omega's it was rhodium-plated brass. Omega then applied a sunburst to the plate, Journe does not (that's why the Journe looks like nothing else). After that, it's apply a layer of blue lacquer, polish it, apply another layer, rinse and repeat, then apply the dial furniture/pad print the appliques.

Yeah watches are more expensive in the EU. If I bought them from an Japan or USA seller through C24, until it arrives in Germany and on my hands, it would be another 2000$ in Taxes and Fees so it's the same price. You don't know about import taxes, fees and VAT? Obviously things are more expensive in Europe because someone starts wars all the time and makes us pay for them. Plus, huge plus, I paid cash, I avoid paying online/by card whenever possible. Such is the life of a europoor.

You don't have to specify it for sale Europe. You're adding needless conditions in a pathetic way to save face.

Go to Japan, buy it there for cheap. Wear it home. You will not get nabbed by customs. They're not going to check what watch you were wearing.
Then ship the boxes to yourself from Japan. You may have to pay import fees on a box, but since the box is worthless it won't be anything.

How the fuck can they stop people and ask where they’ve got their watch from? Makes no sense, they’d be stopping everyone with an expensive watch. I could see them checking someone with a suitcase full of watches though, but even then isn’t it the customs’ job to prove it’s bought abroad?

Mortadello's collection is worth a ton, but he never mentions money and gets upset/embarrassed when someone does. His collection is worth close to a half million.
OmegaDrunk doesn't mention how much he paid for his collection, even though his best watch is worth over 30k.
ALS Anons and Reverso Anon's collections are each worth well over 50k but they never mention money or even what they do for a living.

That's common among immigrants, especially ones with working-class jobs. If you're a doctor or something worthwhile, you're earning your place in society. If you're just a worker, you feel the need to both impress the people whose country you're living in but also your family back on Monkey Island. You have to prove you're not a Mitesser.

it's good to have some sort of catalogue of factory models to identify if something is a frankenwatch or not, or just a reference for a factory model
I guess this is more handy for buying online rather than at thrift stores though
for example, this site is a pretty complete catalogue of vintage soviet watches in factory configurations: https://mroatman.wixsite.com/watches-of-the-ussr/raketa

I currently own a two-liner sub 14060 and I'm debating whether I should sell it and go for the current sub model 124060 because I find the old strap extremely uncomfortable, especially in the summer.

Any anons have owned both? Which one did you ultimately prefer? I'm hesitant I'm a wristlet and the 14060 fits me just right, whereas the 124060 might look too big.

I had a 16610 and sold it for a 116610 (the SubC). I too, have a pretty slim wrist (I'm not in central Florida) and did not like the SubC. Despite having similar numbers, the new one felt much heavier and bulkier. I much preferred the lighter, slimmer feel of the old one. The latest generation of Sub wears even larger.
I've since sold the SubC as well.

No, don't do it. Put it on a nylon or rubber strap in summer. The new one is huge compared to your perfect sub. Have held many many subs and the 14060 really is the nicest one that is modern enough to never worry about it. Never sell it.
>>17928259
Modern stuff as well, it's what I wear most of the time, the old stuff is a bit fragile, plastic crystals, wonky crowntubes/no wr, old crumbly lume and that. You can see the scratches on the crystal in the pic I posted, that's just from wearing it doing normal life stuff.

It's funny, I've been thinking about getting into vintage watches but every single vintage watch I have ever handled, including high end Patek pieces, feel and to a lesser extent look like complete shit compared to modern offerings. It's pretty difficult to explain just how different even a vintage Rolex is from a modern example. They feel like completely different brands.

Thanks for the responses. To add to my reasoning I'm also considering the older gmt 16710 and was debating to sell my sub for the new one and get an old gmt if things in life go well. My sub doesn't get worn as much as I'd like because I'm in-between one link removed and two links removed and haven't found a comfortable fit (something I'm hoping the new strap would address).

I read this article recently: https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-...-brutal-watch-thieves-are-totally-remorseless

.. and the comments were an eye-opener. Basically the gist is, if you wear a Rolex outside your house you deserve to be mugged because you're just showing off, so the majority of people in the UK at least think you should only wear your Rolex at home.

Now this isn't about discussing the merits of those arguments, given they are a perfect example of the Dunning Kruger effect, but merely a discussion about how to be sympathetic to people who think like this. What I mean is, the majority of people aren't like us, and we should want to engage meaningfully with all people because we're not snobs right? At least for me, I am a middle-class guy and don't hang around the elite, nor wish to, so I don't appreciate being labelled as elitist by the average guy on the street. Is there a way to engage meaningfully with people like this, or is it a lost cause - there's no way to change their minds, and we will be forever seen as wasteful in their eyes?

Eh, I love vintage. A different time where there was more room for making something beautiful and elegant, more things were done by hand and that craftsmanship is what I miss in modern stuff, I think. Modern offerings usually don't speak to me on the same level. High end stuff is a different story, take Voutilainen or Dufour, it's breathtaking beauty, incredible details. It's making a comeback with smaller independent/microbrands as well and I'm all for it.

Guys I have a formal company party on the 24th and I really want to impress people there. The thing is I've always been an Apple Watch guy, can anyone recommend me a decent dress watch that isn't a fucking Diesel or Fossil. A Seiko or Citizen is fine, I just don't see a reason to buy an expensive watch just for one party. Price: $150-$500. I can go a bit more, prefer stainless but gold plated is okay as well. Right now I'm looking at the Tangente 33 or Seiko Cocktail Time. But again I also don't want something too expensive since I probably won't be wearing something that doesn't track my calories.

I know they're trying to turn things around now, and they've made some decent strides, but it takes a lot longer to rebuild a good reputation than it does to fuck one up.

No one said they're suddenly great. Calm down.,

They were good in the 60s and 70s.
They made shitty quartz watches after wards.
They are just now starting to make some decent watches again, but overall they are still shit.

Like the other anon said, it's easier to ruin a reputation than rebuild one.
