17913134 No.17913134 [Reply] [Original]

I've always been attached to goth culture and aesthetics, but never really took the time to build a wardrobe. Now I'm trying to do that but all the ideas I see online just look like dudes larping at a renaissance fair. I'm looking for something subtle and suitable for day to day life.

Also: hard mode, I'm moving to Arizona soon so ideally something lighter materials or less reliant on excessive layers and coats.

Tldr: What would a male Wednesday Addams wear in summer? Thanks

Then surely you would know that Goth as a clothing style, has many sub genres within it...

If you don't wanna look like a larper, keep it basic. From black chinos with long sleeves black tee / shirt and some black boots. Simple and clean. To more adult like black grey pants, pref pleated for an 80s style, with a shirt or sweater.

I listen to a little bit of a bunch of different styles of goth music and a lot of different kinds of music and interests in general. I'm just looking for something that stands out as distinctly goth in a way that still looks suitable for day to day life like going to class or walking around town. Something subtle but tasteful, but just wearing all black is perhaps a bit too subtle. Lacks anything that stands out as specifically goth, as anyone of any culture can just wear black

Almost all goths look semi normal clothes wise, even the bands in day to day life, the only thing that makes some stand out is the haircut, or the facial makeup.

Like rivethead or industrial goth is basically all black, but with some fancy pieces, belts that stand out, big boots and so on. People certainly will know what you're into then.

Even a band shirt with basic blacks would lift it up a little.

I'm not opposed to simple, but I would like to have options to mix it up a bit as well. Was looking for something slightly preppy. As someone who's been visiting the WGT as a regular since over 20 years,
partly to laugh about all the larpers there I can give you some advise.
In order for me to help you you've gotta answer some questions first.
First of all "goth" isn't a monolithic subculture but an umbrella term for different communities that are drawn to the darker side of life and fascinated by death. Despite it mostly being the case this doesn't have to be a musical affiliation but can also concern literature, art or philosophy.
>What species of goth subculture do you identify most with? I've listed a few so you can choose.
If you can't tell just namedrop your ten favorite bands. Can be artists, writers or philosophers aswell but music is the easiest way to identify it.
>Darkwave
>Industrial
>Goth Rock
>Batcaver
>Post Punk
>Neofolk
>BDSM/Fetish
>Shoegaze
>Medieval
>EBM
>Endzeitromantiker/Neue Deutsche Todeskunst
>Schwarzromantiker
>Metal (which substyle? Black Metal, Dark Metal, Doom Metal, Gothic Metal, ...)
>Dungeon Synth
>Visual Kei
>Horrorpunk
>Cyber Goth
Second question:
>What's your physique? How tall, fit, thin/fat are you?
As always in fashion It's basically impossible to give proper advise without knowing these factors.
>How old are you?
There are some styles you just won't be able to pull off at a certain age. Either because you're too young to make it work or because you've passed a certain treshhold. A twenty something person larping as an oldschool 80s Grufti for example will come off as a tryhard and well larpy.
>How deep are you into the "goth" rabbithole?
For how long have you been into the music? How often to you attend concerts, gatherings or festivals? Are your friends in the scene too? Is it a big part of your daily life and your identity or did you just recently fell for the doomer meme and want to score a big tiddy goth gf?
>What hairstyle do you have or are you aiming for?
It's a major part of the look.

[...]

Besides that I can give you some general advice that goes for all subcultures. Being goth isn't so much a musical, political, philosophical or artistic preference as it is a state of mind. Depression, insomnia and a certain social anxiety are among the most common symptoms of this mentality. If you're not a poser you should naturally have dark circles under your eyes already and pale skin because you avoid the sun. A somewhat sickly overall appearance can also help. Look like someone who recently had a little too much blood drawn. You can fake this using makeup but it's much cooler if it comes off as a side effect from being in a constant existential crisis. Oh also always cover your eyes with sunglasses when outside even if teh sun is just barely shining. And the most important thing DON'T SMILE! NEVER! (at least not when someone is watching)

PS: don't refer to yourself as "goth" it will make you look like a scene tourist just say you're a "sad bastard" or some shit.

True. I guess I would say "goth-adjacent", and will include other styles that fit under a similar umbrella even if it's not exactly goth per say.
>but an umbrella term for different communities that are drawn to the darker side of life and fascinated by death
This has always described me. Growing up on Bauhaus, Siousxie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy etc. reading Dracula, watching Tim Burton etc. etc. will do that to you.

>If you can't tell just namedrop your ten favorite bands. Can be artists, writers or philosophers aswell but music is the easiest way to identify it.
I listen to some Darkwave like VNVnation or Chrom, some Industrial like NIN, Ministry, Rammstein, Angelspit. Some post punk and new wave, New Order, Joy Division, The Cure. Some goth rock, Sisters of Mercy, Type O Negative, Bauhaus of course. Lots of metal, typically proggrier stuff like Opeth, Tool, some thrash metal like Megadeth and Metallica. I'm quite varied which is why I'm not worried about which subgenre I dress as, as long as it looks good.

>What's your physique? How tall, fit, thin/fat are you?
I'm a 5 10 ectomorph with long thin arms and legs. I'm an athlete and will be regularly training Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu once I've moved, but I don't anticipate that I'll be able to put on much muscle very quickly so I'll probably remain on the thinner side. If it helps you visualize I'm also quite pale.
>How old are you?
26 and going back to college, but when I shave clean these 18 year olds think I'm one of them lol I'm sort of a stealth moder I guess cause I look fairly young. To be on the safe side we'll say I present early 20s.
>For how long have you been into the music?
My dad introduced me to most of the bands I listed above, so I grew up on this stuff. It's been with me all my life, I just never took the time to do the aesthetic part of the culture, but I'm deciding to do that.
>How often to you attend concerts, gatherings or festivals?
I'm pretty anti social and don't leave the house much, but I've attended some Azar Swan and used to go to the Out of the Shadows festival down in Portland.
>Are your friends in the scene too?
No, and after I move I won't know anyone in town. That being said I'm looking to be myself anyways, and I'm sure I'll make friends with time.
>Is it a big part of your daily life and your identity
Of course it is. I grew up on this, and the draw to the darker side you mentioned above has always been with me. That being said I am unironically a doomer, and a qt goth gf would be fine with me lol but those aren't my motivations.
>What hairstyle do you have or are you aiming for?
Picrelated, second from the left with the black hair looks similar to my hair. Mine is currently dark brown already, but I'll probably dye it jet black at some point.

This post was intended to respond to >>17915405 though it does address the same point that I've been perhaps a bit lazy with my labeling, when I say goth I typically mean goth adjacent and usually anything pertaining to the various subcultures that are drawn to and identify with the macabre, and that would include perhaps others like emo, or dark academia etc. Basically as long as it has a darker aesthetic to it
