How do I get over wanting to pinch every penny with cheap shitters? It gets especially retarded because I actually don't care about that sort of stuff north of 1500 bucks, but God forbid I buy a quartz Prx for 50 more than I could pay for an import. Fucking why? I'm not gonna sell a 399€ Euro watch.

>> No.17861254

my dad is a 65 year old boomer and retiring soon. I wanna get him a watch for Christmas, up to 1000 USD. right now he dailies an real old eco-drive that looks nice.
he has some other shitters that have crapped out over the years and it ticks him off, he also just wants the watch to work all the time (he basically doesn't wear some seiko automatic he owns because he doesn't wanna wear it or shake it every other day to keep it wound) so I'm obviously leaning heavily towards solar quartz/eco-drive
Obviously I have a few watches in mind myself but do you guys have any recs? He is black and not the kind of guy to change straps so I'm looking to avoid brown straps entirely because I think it wouldn't look too great.

Is there any watches that would fit the bill for mountaineering and alpine climbing? heres a list of features I would consider well suited for it

-durable
-slim profile as not to get caught while climbing
-alarms (necessary)
-resistance to cold temps (maybe digital works better here as its easier to carry an extra battery)
-preferably non metal frame as to not conduct the cold through the watch body
-outdoor features like a barometer, thermometer, compass
-long lasting life (cant be a digital garmin that needs a recharge after a week as their lithium batteries lose efficiency and charge dramatically in freezing temps)
-hopefully cheap enough to not cry about it when it breaks

Why is "stainless steel" or "synthetic crystal" some premium unobtainable material? Luxury watches market themselves as having the most basic shit, really cheap stuff, being worthy and above the cheap acrylic or mineral glass watches with only stainless steel backs and some garbage tin case. I bought a whole set of stainless steel pots and pans I've used for nearly a decade for $30, I've lost diamonds in antique inherited jewelry and had the stones replaced and set with synthetic ones for $50
I get it's a JEWelry thing in general, it's all a shitty scam that people buy into because it's pretty or whatever the fuck but for fucks sake, why is it so hard to offer basic quality materials with a quartz movement in the $50 range? Question which of these should I eliminate:

Pelagos 39 - I'm not a professional diver, the watch is almost a perfect size and reminds me of the older Tag 2000s. But overall it's pretty poor quality especially since Tudor opted to use the scratch prone Titanium Grade 2 instead of 5. Keeps good time but the bracelet is scratched.

Speedmaster Professional 3570.50 - my first ever 'expensive watch' bought it on eBay 7 years ago for $3400. Never kept good time and probably needed to be sent back to Omega. But I do love its history, I just don't love the watch itself. I never used the chromo function, the only serious use I have for this watch is posting pictures of it on /wt/ and reddit.

IDK how much I would get for either of them, and I'm not interested in anything atm. But I am hoping to make a small profit from the Omega and possibly lost a tiny bit on the Tudor. What do you guys think? Keep one or get rid of both?

They went Solar. Why have a 10 years battery when you can go indefinitely?

Casio Lineage are solar, radio controlled, got perpetual calendar world time, a fucking LED lighting, sapphire crystal, steel watch goes for 150$ and titanium for 200$.

And the second hand alignment is fucking IMMACULATE, they even made a fucking crosshair on the dial exactly as thick as the seconds hand is so you could admire how perfectly the seconds hand matches it. The shots don't capture it but it also ticks exceptionally quietly and the hand doesn't wobble at all but rather steps smoothly.

Did i mention it was 200$ for titanium and 150$ for steel?

>>17862309
Not strictly premium, more high end JDM, since Casio and Citizen also do it on their watches that are >$1k, although from what I've heard, Casio doesn't do their own zaratsu polish but rather have those cases done from the same factory that already works on polishing GS cases. Grand Seiko's the only one that got known for doing that here in the US since they're the only ones that advertise themselves doing so, I brought it up to a watch store owner that Casio has Titanium Oceanus cases that DO have Zaratsu Polish and the guy still didn't believe me, it doesn't help that zaratsu polish is just so fucking hard to take a picture of. Even doing a video of the "opalescent" effect it does is a struggle to catch.

It's also why it bothers the hell out of me why Citizen isn't doing the same thing. They make better movements, they can do zaratsu polish inhouse, yet the you barely see their automatics outside of Japan. They're far more keen on competing with Casio in the Western market hence why most of Citizen watches you see sold here in the US are almost ALWAYS Eco-Drives. They literally have the guns to go head to head with Seiko, and even win, they just don't seem to want to.

Definitely. Amtrak is federally chartered, and having a watch is MANDATORY, alongside two other requirements for said watches:
>Can't be a smartwatch
>It has to display seconds

So guess which 2 brands you get to see them wear? It's always a Casio with Tough Solar or a Citizen with Eco-Drive.

I brought up how it's a no brainer to go for either since the watches that they do have that do Solar/Eco-Drive also tend to also have Multi-Band 6, but the conductor I talked to said that it's actually not always helpful in practice as it looks in theory.

yea, the guy fashions himself as a Banksy of the watch world so he's been offering collab contracts left and right. What got people's attention was how a collab watch he came up with Massena Lab sold out for 5k each followed by 2 successful collabs with Timex which put his designs on the map.

This particular situation pretty much shook alot of microbrands as well. I know Vario's CEO already wants to work with the guy assuming the collab contract wasn't as bad as the one he got with King Feature for the Navi x Popeye collab, the only thing holding him back is whether he should go for a collab with Seconde Seconde, or using those funds to buy a bulk of the next movement in every microbrand's radar right now: La Joux Perret's D100 movement.

This was clearly Spinnaker's first rodeo since they made the horrible mistake of making the ENTIRE stock available for people on the list 5 minutes prior to the sale, instead of alotting a certain amount for early birds.

It was sold out within 20s, which reminded me more of Supreme drops than your usual Zelos drop, which was a telltale sign bots were involved.

The last time I've seen this happen to a microbrand was with Mr. Jones' Mispoes, that watch was later being scalped for $800 on eBay.

It's normalized now that the hype is dead so the last auction I saw of it settled for $405, but half a year had to pass before that happened.

>>17862456
Didn't expect a watch brand to do some GPU shenanigans but that's unfortunate if true.

If it was scalped for around $800, it would've settled to $500-600 which is still somewhat reasonable, but not when scalpers are already setting the unofficial RRP this high.

To give Spinnaker credit, they never had a hit like this before, since this is their first design that actually appeals to both Zoomers AND Millennials. I've always had an easy time getting the watches I'd like since I know I'm racing against Boomers who are deadass manually typing their credit cards instead of logging in to Paypal and Shopify beforehand.
