Curious, wouldn't dive watches be better off using tritium instead of luminova? It's not like you will get much sunlight under water anyway so it seemed counter-intuitive to me.
I have a normal dress watch with a very tiny strip luminova and whenever I check it at the middle of the night the lume would be completely dead. Do those large luminovas on dive watches last longer or something?

What does the setting regime what you use with your daily mechanical watch look like, /wt/?

For example, my Seiko is on average 12.5s/d slow, so I bump it three minutes forward every two weeks to keep it within +/-90s of atomic time during those two weeks, meaning that aside from daylight savings twice a year I only need diddle with it 26 times a year.

The Mercedes hand actually served a purpose at a time when lume application and adherence was shitty. It allowed the big area of lume to be applied in smaller regions so it was less likely to crack and peel away. Today it's basically just a stylistic choice that persists from heritage.

It's really interesting how much the old heads figured out about watch design so early on in watchmaking. Almost every aspect of every watch was made the waynit was for a purpose that we don't even question today because we're so far removed from those problems being solved. They put date windows at 3 o'clock so that busy gentlemen could quickly reference the date without needing to pull their sleeve back. That's a great idea we don't even think twice about, a lot of people even prefer 6 o'clock dates now for the symmetry and because most people wearing watches aren't wearing them with suits anymore.

i had to sew out the springbars and replace them to get the current band attached but that even being an option took me time to figure out.

The Speedmaster was designed as a motorsports chronograph (to compete with the Heuer Carrera).

However, perforated straps are a bit much for that piece. To each his own. What bothers me more is that he bought the Nu-Speedmaster instead of the "real" model that came in the legendary fuck off box. It's like buying an imitation of an imitation of the original.

Let's start with the bracelet. It feels cheap and it even sounds cheap when you move. It's such a big downgrade from my presage sharp edged, which costs 250€ more, that I am starting to think that it was just an after thought. There is no branding on it [the bracelet] and it only says, on the inside, ''Stainless Steel -B''. And I am still not done with the bracelet part. The clasp, as you can see from the pic, has this huge opening that screams ''Not thought out'' from meters away. And no, it's not only my watch that looks like that, it's not broken, it actually is the look of the clasp. They almost tried a bit by making it brushed on the front and polished on the side to make it look like something, but they couldn't save it.
Moving on: The dimensions of the watch. They feel off. It's way too thick for what it is (pictures following), and the open back is a joke because 50% of it is the case hiding it and it looks clumsy too because of how thick it is. That and the case diameter is too small for its thickness which makes it look almost like a blob. The saphire glass is curved which gives it that stupid dome-like look and that's a shame because it is taking away from the only saving grace of the watch, the Dial. Which brings me to the one point that might make you consider this watch. The dial. It's simply amazing and the detail [of the dial] is well worth the price. That, and the caliber 6R35A is a pretty decent mid-tier caliber. These are the only reason that you get this watch.
Closing, there is No reason to not get the Alpinist or the Baby Alpinist because they go for the same price.

>>17848552
Of course not. The Speedy is notorious for being delicate. Bash it around and it looks like utter shit in a matter of days. Acrylic will dent, bend or snap, the steel is unironically the softest I've ever had on a watch (it feels like white gold and scratches super easily). It's not an everyday watch unless you don't give a shit about destroying it. Which you may not, but I prefer to keep my stuff in good condition while still wearing it. That's why I barely wear my Speedy.

And yeah, don't even wash your hands with that fucker. It's about as watertight as Kursk. The new movement is stupid, but it's not technically bad. They gave it a co axial escapement, thereby changing the vintage formula that has been in place since the 60s (basically when they abandoned the column wheel until today, it was the same movement for 50 years give or take). I think that's really stupid because the charm of the Moonwatch is the vintage defects. The bastard keeps time like shit. I don't care. It's a "pretend you're in the 60s wearing a watch of the 60s." I mean you either love it or hate it. It's not for everyone.

Aaaand yes they raised prices. If you want my advice, buy the 1861 in the big fucker box while you still can for decent prices (around 5k should be the going rate for a nice condition piece). It will be the one that is collectible down the line. Yes they sold a lot of them but they are desired and demand is only going up. And no other Speedy ever made (from the main line) has had this presentation box. It may not be a limited edition but it looks like one.

The new one just comes in a fucking cuckbox, pic related. It doesn't even have a loupe or NATO strap with it.

And the 1861 is now trading for the same money as the "new" 3861 model on the used market. It will be a year or two until the 1861 becomes more expensive than the 3861. Discontinued models tend to appreciate especially when they are as famous in the watch community as the "legendary" box. To tell you the truth I don't know anyone who wants the new model Speedy over the old. Myself included. At the same money I would never buy the new one. Probably even for less I wouldn't buy the new one. I just don't fucking like what they did to it. The movement didn't need to be modernized. The dial didn't need to be altered. The bracelet sucks, it tapers way too much. And then there is the fact that the new Speedmaster is forever tainted by "sharp edges to cut yourself with".

I have this old watch that hasn't had the battery changed I assume since it died decades ago, I can't find a lip anywhere to pry it off but I can see where my mother and grandmother have attempted to remove it with all sorts of scrapes and scratches at a couple specific spots.

There is a less desirable model with a sapphire crystal and see through caseback, called the 1863. It's a little more durable but otherwise has the same flaws.

If you want a robust, durable chronograph that isn't super expensive, you might want to look at an IWC Fliegerchronograph (the cheapest one you can get), or a Breitling Superocean Chronograph, or even a Seamaster Chronograph. Those watches will take a beating, especially IWC are known to survive a plane crash.

I went to the swatch store out of boredom and they had this in stock and I thought I would impulse buy it but holy shit the quality is so in your face awful. It feels so light and cheap and the chronograph seconds jump over the sub-seconds and the chrono minute subdial doesnt even have markers for each minute

i thought maybe with the hype gone i could get one as a fun watch for less but nope people actually sell these for more than they paid for which already feels bad lol

for the same price or just a bit more you can get an entry level Seiko with a workhorse mechanical or solid quartz movement made out of stainless steel. for a bit more with some patience you can get a used Bulova Lunar Pilot which is so so much better.

it feels ironic that you might think this would be the speedmaster for the poor but it feels more like something people who own a speedmaster get for the fun colors because for them 260€ is basically nothing
