It needs to fit right

>> No.17848739

3 button is unacceptable for a blazer. 3 roll 2 is just a nice stylistic detail, not something that makes or breaks a jacket. The actually important thing is the deeper "V" created by 2 functional buttons, which is much more flattering than that of a 3 button jacket. More slimming, more youthful, more open/casual, shows more of your tie, and leads the eye to your face.
We're spending a lot of time on the basics today huh.

Where to buy high quality OCBDs without breaking the bank?

I am in northern europe and everything i can find in local malls and such is either of very poor quality fabric or fits bad. I am skinny so either slim fit or a slimmer regular fit give me the classic look i want. My problem with shirts is often that they are either to small in the shoulders or way to large around the waist. Yeah, I bought some chinos for like 130$ that were too tight and too long. So I paid like 60$ to get them tailored and I still don’t like how they look, and I thought they’d stretch out in the pelvis area but they’re still too tight. Literally just gonna give them to Goodwill and eat that $200. I also bought a $100 blazer that served me pretty well and I really did like it but I just got a better one for $600 and I like that one a lot better, wish I just would’ve got the more expensive one right away. I got some $100 jeans that I am starting to hate the slimness of and am trying to find better less tapered ones. Besides that a $90 shirt with arm sleeves too short to wear a jacket with is all I can think of off the top of my head. Obviously tons of thrifted stuff I never wore once, giving all of that to my brother next time I see him, for some reason I bought like 3 quarter zips and I hate quarter zips. KMS. At least I’m at work right now and getting paid to type this. Still kicking myself over those chinos.

J Press is $150 now. Mercer & Sons is like $250. Brooks new model is $200. You can get nice looking ones from Ratio or Luxire for $100 but they're made in Asia to offset the cost of made to measure.

Just earlier this year J Press's OCBD was $120. Dont worry though, im sure our wages will go up 25% per year to compensate.

For the suits, maybe black tassel loafers. Casually, maybe a pair of tan brogues or something of the like. I'm assuming that you don't NEED a pair of Oxfords, or you'd have already bought them as your first pair.

Allen Edmonds are trash, don't bother. As for the colours, I'm never 100% sold on cream trousers with black shoes. Navy blazer+grey flannel trousers and black shoes is a classic look, but you're correct that trousers of too dark a shade will be lacking in contrast. Some of this is helped by the flannel itself adding a bit of texture and visual interest to the pants. Hopefully it's an actual blazer (brass buttons etc.) and not just an odd, navy jacket.

It is an actual navy blazer with brass buttons, I'm not a pleb (jokes). I think you're right that cream and black and navy looks weird, I think oxblood is a better color there. But my blazer is so navy that it basically looks black, and now that I think of it I think that it would look silly with black tassel loafers because it's too matchy matchy (imagine picrel with black tassel loafers, instead, it would look silly I think because not enough contrast). I guess I'll stick with my oxblood loafers, which is a shame because I really want to try wearing tassel loafers. Let me know what you think, also what brands of loafers would you recommend to buy new?

Hey all, wondering about Oxford fabrics. I'm looking at Proper Cloth and trying to figure out if it's worth it to pay $50-100 more for a better OCBD fabric, like American Pima or Thomas Mason compared to the standard OCBD fabric. Will a nicer fabric keep me more cool? I assume it's more breathable?

New depends on your price bracket, obviously, but I just can't recommend AE considering the drop in quality vs. price, even when on sale. They're also all made in the Dominican Republic now. You could purchase Loakes for the same price, which have more attractive lasts (imo) and better quality control. Herring have branded shoes which come out of the Loake, Barker and Cheaney factories at various price points. Meermins are a pain to break in, by all accounts, but incredible quality for the price. The most exciting shoe to try, imo, would be BRIDLEN. They're the Indian factory who do a lot of the lower priced Loake and Barker shoes, and have taken to using the best hides they get for their own shoes. The Founder's Line shoes seem to be Cheaney quality for Loake money, and the Main Line are a little bit cheaper for less quality, but still an insane deal.

Speaking of, I picked up my own tassel loafers (Cheaney's Henry II) barely used off eBay for around $220AU, and about half of that was paying postage. Abbott's Shoes is another fantastic resource. A pair of shoes simply being on someone else's feet immediately cuts the price in half. Take advantage of this fact.

If you're London based, cop at Stephen Haroutunian, the store clerk is a bit odd but they cut very traditionally, most of their custom is making dress shirts of the British Army, and they make in Cyprus or Greece IIRC. They're too tight and too short. A real moleskin doesn't stretch, so you need a wider pant leg for it not to strain and become uncomfortable when you sit down (or even move). You do break them in to some extent but fundamentally, you can't wear fitted moles unless you're planning to stand up all day. Also and partially for the same reason, you want a pretty full break on moles, cords and the like because otherwise the leg rises up too much when seated, as in the pic. You want the lift to be about an inch or two above the tibial "knuckle", whatever the hell that's actually called, not like four.

>>17856950
>any tips or things it took you a while to learn?
Most of those things are hard to convey in writing, it's stuff like what does a good cut look and feel like, what does good cloth of a specific type feel like in the hand, what is an actually decent price for a given item. You basically have to learn these things by experience. If you live in one of the few places where you have access to vintage menswear stores I advise you to go regularly and especially look at older stuff, it doesn't need to be the right size for you to get familiar with fabrics for example, and if the store guys aren't complete cunts (this is honestly a tossup) you don't need to buy very often, they understand they'll make a sale when you find a really good piece.

Most of the advice I could dispense in pithy post form is stuff everyone realizes immediately, like "you have to dress /tip/ because you really like it yourself, you won't get any respect from anybody for doing it, except maybe a type of girl you absolutely don't want anything to do with". I'll try to think if there's anything meaningful, brief and non-self-evident I could say.
