> why is the hour hand shorter than the minute hand
You don’t need to read the hour markers very precisely. There’s only 12 hour markers vs 60 minute markers so you need greater precision with the minute hands, hence they are longer.
> Why are second hands so long and thin
Again they need to be long to read the seconds precisely. They are probably thin because you actually read the second hand the least.

You know it's trivial to regulate your own watch now, right? I've got a fucking phone app that I just take the back off my watch, rest it on the bottom of my phone, and it tells me how close it is. No need for a fancy timegrapher, I'm within a second a day after a couple of tries.

Today I’m wearing my 420 scuba dude Vostok Amphibia. I love the aesthetics and history, but the damn thing keeps freezing up. Whether I’m wearing it or not. Shaking it doesn’t help. When I unscrew the crown to fix the time it usually starts up again, but will freeze a few hours later. I read that if I unscrew the crown then slam the crown into a table that could fix it, and son of a gun it does, but it usually freezes again after a day or two. I’d love to wear this more, but I want to trust the time I’m looking at.

It's one of those things where if your wrist is exactly the right shape and circumference, then a bracelet can fit absolutely perfectly, but if you're a couple millimeters off here or there, then it's hopeless.

Nah, at that price point you might as well go for GS quartz. I would recommend SBGV243 or SBGV245 for the more sporty look and SBGV011 for the chonky dressy look (all three are discontinued so you'd have to go used), or maybe the sporty quartz GMT SBGN019/021/023.

Thanks for the recommendation. I put 2-5k as my pricepoint but I would like to keep it closer to around 2k, 5k was the absolute maximum I would spend. If I spend much more I think I would regret not just spending the extra to get an Aqua Terra. But I don't really want to spend that much on a watch right now. Is there much selection of Grand Seiko watches around the 2k price? Also I've heard that servicing Grand Seiko watches can be a bit of a pain in the ass because you need to send it to Japan

How do they justify the price?

quartz watches at that price will have some fancy high accuracy movement
mechanicals will either have an in-house movement or a modified off-the shelf movement with some added features
also analog watches will have a nice dial with nice finishing or a lot of detail

this is just a $100 g-shock in a metal case

Most watch cases are featureless ovals where a crown, bezel and caseback sit. The G-Shock has dimples and multifaceted corner bumpers with lost of corners and surfaces. My theory is that wrist watches became basically obsolete by the widespread use of cell phones that had built in clocks, so they stopped being a functional tool that most people wore and became mostly status symbol jewellery. And because of that it became fashionable to make them large and loud so that they were more noticeable. I think hip-hop culture also made big flashy jewellery more at the forefront of pop culture. Now smaller ones are becoming more fashionable because it's perceived as looking more retro/classic and that's what's in vogue right now. That's just my guess.

What is the financial-quality curve on watches? At what lower threshold of price do watches actually become "bad"?

I'm not exactly a horologist, but in terms of reliability, I can't tell much difference between my only two watches, a citizen eco drive and an omega seamaster. I feel that all the extra money in the seamaster goes toward the movement and weight. Even if the materials are tougher, it doesn't matter much for day-to-day use.

So it makes me wonder, how cheap do you have to go before an analog watch is actually unreliable as a daily driver, assuming your only requirements are that the watch can tell time accurate to the second and that it can withstand being dropped?

I don’t know and it’s a good question. The high-end brands do seem much more expensive than before, relatively speaking. Perhaps global demand for luxury watches is higher now, but supply hasn’t kept up. Although advancements in production technologies should’ve brought prices down.

Kikes have raised prices across the board as fewer and fewer watches are sold per capita and they're designed more as status symbols than functional tools.

The whole industry is really kept afloat by third world nouveau riche types who want the watches they saw in hollywood movies of yesteryear. Most new watches are sold to China, India, and the Middle East.

I think it's been increased artificially, because luxury is changing. 30 years ago the price of some of the most popular Rolex models was about the same as your average monthly salary at the time. Yet, not many people had them because "Who can just put down 1500 dollars like that? On a watch?"
Now pretty much everyone has the latest iphone in their pocket, probably a pair of wireless earbuds too, that's easily 1500 bucks but you would never see that and think to yourself "Wow, this guy must be loaded"

Adding in another couple hundred or couple thousand dollars for a watch doesn't seem like that much when you think of it that way. You probably walk by dozens of people daily with over $10k worth of shit on their body.

Rolex is not worth the price but I’m not sure omega is either. If you’re buying either one you don’t really care I guess

Well I mean what it’s worth for me personally as I could do all sorts of other things with the money. What they’re asking for an explorer or submariner, which I actually might buy, at the moment is simply too much for me at least. I think a basic Explorer is more than 8k USD. How much cash would I be willing to drop for one? Maybe 5k max. What it’s worth ”objectively” or whatever sounds like a nonsensical qiesrion

Timex's movements are intentionally loud. Thats basically their trademark. Some really like that extra loud tick, some fucking hate it. Timex also has indiglo on many of their quartz analog watches too which basically nobody else does.

Timex has many steel cased watches, you may just have to spend an extra $20-40 on it though.

You just know its some guy in Japan that builds 2-4 watches per year, only when he needs money, only when he fuckin feels like it. He probably doesn't hand-machine all the individual gears and screws, the only things that need to be custom made are the dial, hands, and maybe the strap but what watchmaker does their own leatherwork?

My bet is dude bought all the parts, sold 5-8 watches for the years living costs and parts expenses and now just works 20 hours a year. Fuck I'm gonna try that. Worst thing that happens is I end up with some watches I made. Best thing is I can sell 2 watches a year and live a better life.

The distance between the lugs of my new watch is 19mm. Do I need to find a 19mm NATO strap for it or can I use either an 18mm or 20mm strap?
