No, I bought an original pair from France. From a dedicated store. Leather feels nice, toebox feels amazing for me, always some issues with pinky toe splay is particularly an issue for me with flatter feet.

What are some brands (in Europe) where you can send your shoes back to them for a resole and they will do a good job?

I know Carmina will absolutely butcher your shoes if you do that. No clue on TLB.

Bonafe offers resoles for 200€ but I have not heard if it's good or bad. I'm sure they will at least try to do a good job, they do not half ass things.

On my last Bonafe order I went with leather sole + Topy, my thinking being that I can replace the Topy at a local cobbler and they will be able to manage.

just goes to show that the further you stray into the whites offshoot brands the more desperate and ready to whore themselves out they seem to get
no self respecting brand would resole a boot from a competitor
it's stupid to do on every level
it's just common sense that whoever does work on the boot last takes at least partial responsibility for it, beyond the scope of their actual work on it
any mistakes nicks may or may not have made during manufacturing becomes their problem now, the customer will go complain to them first and nicks has every right to deny any liability by saying "should have come to us instead"
why would you stick your head out for a competitor like that, unless you are just that fucking desperate

I noticed these on White's site on the collab section.
As far as I can tell, the specs say it's a Perry Select, but they slapped on some additional patches and are selling it for $40 less.

Is this potentially a good buy?

depends if you like the cap toe or not
the blacksmith is the more subtle choice and has the better looking hardware+ rolled top
on the iron ranger the cap toe adds to the already bulbous toe of the boot and gives it a very characteristic bumpy clown shoe silhouette, but that's what makes these boots iconic, for better or worse
the 8111 is ok, but i think the copper rough and tough leather on the 8085 has more character and after a month darkens to what the amber harness looks new anyway

I don't own blacksmiths but I own Iron Rangers 8111 and Beckmans. Assuming the blacksmiths' leather are similar to the beckmans, here's my comparission between the two:

The Iron Rangers have an oil tanned leather which makes it supple, flexible and easy to break in. They're probably the easiest real heritage boots in that regard, break in period might take from a couple of days to about a week tops. The leather also requires very little maintenance, tends to patina very fast and looks worn in pretty fast. You should be aware that since the leather is so flexible and they have a fairly stiff captoe, they tend to crease and bunch a lot between the captoe and the facings, so I strongly encourage to use shoe trees on these boots. In spite of all the "clown shoes meme" they look quite sleek and less bulbous once on your feet than in pics. Overall a versatile and more understated boot in person. I'm very happy with mine.

Beckmans (some of this might not apply to blacksmiths) have a thicker and very stiff leather that takes way more to break in, but you can feel the boots adapting with each wear. Overall they feel like they are better built, like tanks on your feet and also noticeabily heavier. In spite of not having a cap toe, they look more bulbous on the foot, but that might be due to the sole, which is different from the blacksmiths (similar to IRs) so could not be an issue with those. The leather requires more maintenance and you might not need to use shoe tress, at least until they're really broken in.

They're both great boots and I'm really happy with both, really hard to go wrong with either. Since you have access to a store, just see them in person and try them both, pick the ones ypu like the most on your feet.

Red Wings run big. My feet are 275mm long and a D width. My beckmans are 9D (270mm) and my IRs are a 9.5D. While I enjoy the extra toe room the IRs have, I ended up puting a thin leather insole on them for a better fit.

No, they're sized for 270mm long feet (according to the label) they still got some room in the front of my toes but not as much as the iron rangers sized for 275mm feet. The beckmans fit snug but comfortable (more with each wear) but I can't put even a thin leather insert on them without strangling my feet. The IRs ended up feeling a bit off which I solved with said thin leather insert.
I'm still undecide which fit I like best, if I wear my beckmans right after my irs, I feel like they're too tight for about an hor or two. But if I wear my IRs after the beckmans, I feel like my feet are swimmin on them even with the leather insert, even if my toes enjoy all that extra room.
I haven't worn the beckmans as much as the iron rangers so I guess the veredict will come once they're fully broken in (the dole is still pretty stiff and it's hard to flex it).

Can you guys help me understand something?
I notice with a lot of lugged, goodyear welted boots there is no stitching on the outsole. Take these Meermin chelseas for example. So does this mean the upper is stitched to the welt but then the sole is... glued on to the welt? Doesn't gluing lugs onto the bottom of a boot defeat the purpose of lugs and a Goodyear welt? Now the sole's weakest link is as strong as glue- not stitching- so you may well have forgone stitching altogether. Also, the boots are ruggedized with lugs by way of making them... less rugged with a glued outsole? This seems fucking retarded, am I missing something? Any recs for fully stitched chelsea boots?

>> No.17836768

>>17836756
The welt is stitched to the midsole, the rubber outsole is glued into the midsole. This way, once you worn off the rubber outsole enough, replacing it it's a matter of tearing it off and gluing a new one.
Some boots do have the outsole glued and stitched, but if you need to replace the rubber putsole, you need to take everything off, which is more expensive.
Genetally speaking, the outsole will wear faster than the midsole, so sometimes you'll just need to replace the putsole while the rest are still perfectly fine.

Do you guys have any opinions on how hard rubber or dainite soles would stack up to a 45 minutes brief daily hike? Up until now I've only ever used crepe, leather, or soft, lugged rubber.

>>17836768
Ahh I see. Thanks so much. So by gluing all a cobbler has to do is slap a new outsole on when the old one is done rather than operating on the whole boot. I guess this is best in cases where you use a soft rubber outsole and use it a lot.

>> No.17836788

>>17836784
>>17836756
yeah some boots have the outsole stitched/nailed into the midsole. this makes it more firmly attached but obviously more difficult to resole. If its glued all the cobbler needs to do to replace a worn down outsole is rip it off and glue on a new one to the midsole. softer soles that wear faster are usually just glued.

someone explain retarded fashion of wearing tall boots under your jeans? Calf is supposed to protect not to be "protected". Only time it makes sense is maybe when you are wearing thicc leather trousers that indeed offer protection and are almost impossible to tuck anyway. In case of thin fabric you can clearly see calves of tall boos underneath. And I don't see that as an aesthetic look.

When I see photos of actual cowboys (19th century/early 20th) they wear trousers tucked inside tall boots. Only cases when calves are hidden is in cases of leather pants or actually pretty short calves where trouser leg can easily slip outside on it's own. And of course barely any of them wear jeans. They were trousers of mine workers, not cowboys owning actual cattle.

But you knew that from the start because that's what I'm in here asking for. An alternative to the best boot of all time, the roper.

It isn't him addressing the rose anvil review, it's him answering the questions people had in the FB group for them.
It is interesting to know that they emailed him telling him to contact the other collaborator who he ordered from to change the sizing, and he never did, so basically it was Weston's fault he didn't get the right size cause he didn't check his email.

But they're expensive, not delivered here, and you have to wait until next winter for them to get made. They also have fat soles that ruin the aesthetic a bit, alongside the logos.

Very reasonable and professional respons. I also can't imagine harassing a company just because someone else gives a bad review. Who has time to sit and send emails shitting on Wesco's customer service when you don't even have Wesco boots and haven't dealt with them?

Weston himselg admited it publicly, but his fanboys didn't miss a chance to mob a brand. I fucking hate social media.
That being said, having a nail sticking out through the insole is unacceptable on 700$ boots.

Looking at getting a pair of heritage boots, I'm a newfag to boots though and would like something that will last me several years.
I am between the iron ranger and the moc toe, but am open to other brands as well.
I will be using them for day to day wearing, like walking around town and driving.
Any recs?

875s and IR are classic babby's first good boot

consider the White's select perry, even better materials than the Red Wings

You have to water proof either one with something like sno seal.
DESU I'd recommend something more like Truman boots, unless what you want is that exact style.
I feel like red wings are kinda over priced.
