Yeah, this is one of those rare times when Citizen makes a top of the line solar watch that can be pulled off as a dress watch, and it ends up being expensive as shit. At that price point, you are better off buying anything from a Grand Seiko to a Rolex or Omega.

To be fair the point of that citizen is its movement, which is the most accurate quartz movement ever made.

IMO, it's pretty badass for Citizen to make such an accurate movement, but they also managed to make the dial and overall case size of the watch pretty neat too. I would honestly get it for the dial alone, but at the price it currently sits on the 2nd hand market I'd rather have something like a Rolex, Omega or any of the usual suspects in the $3k-$6k price range

Don't care much for the type2, but the older ones, especially the 34mm Lord quartz' are amazing little watches.

Going out of the Quartz Seikos for a moment, Advan series of watches was really wild in its design and how they were made. Those crystals are now extremely rare, if you have an Advan with a broken crystal you are pretty much forced to thundercunt the old crystal and replace it with a flat one.

Is the 0100 really that accurate though? From what I've been reading of their other HAQ Eco-drives, chronomasters etc., is that they promise a lot but in practice you might not actually get that stated yearly accuracy. The percentage of watchfags who report less than rated accuracy, ie. the only types who would actually buy these watches AND actually measure their accuracy, is too high for me to believe that any given 'The Citizen' would actually get the rated spy OOTB.

The benefit is that the design is comprehensive; everything from the bracelet to the lugs is reminiscent of the AT crystal that regulates the watch. It's perfection in design, and that's why it's worth the price. The accuracy is a big part, sure, and that's the main reason I bought it. But Citizen didn't sleep on the aesthetic when they wanted to debut the watch...they thought of every index, every corner, every polish. They're far more respectable a brand than many take them for.

>>17835483
Yes, mine was only beaten by my Zenith 5011k chronometer. It's about half a second behind per year. The stated yearly accuracy is correct, at least for my watch. Remember that the accuracy is measured by the factory before it leaves, so it's unlikely to change once it's shipped to you. You can't alter the rate, of course...but the Japanese don't fuck around.

chronograph owners: how often do you use it?

I got a dive watch and I use the bezel daily to time stuff and I wonder how a mechanical chronograph will take daily use. also how legible are the small dials compared to a big dive bezel? and do you ever use the seconds and hours on your chronograph? so far I didnt need to time more than 60 minutes and I never time anything where the seconds matter

I use two chronographs at work, independently. So, every day, to answer your first question.

The small dials work provided you are used to reading at a quick glance what the elapsed time is, but it'll never be as fast as a central-minutes counter or a bezel. I can activate them sight-unseen, and I can refer to them at a glance.

I was sad too. But I think I've been spoiled, to a degree. You'll see lots of YTube videos describing the Lunar Pilot as a 'replacement' or 'alternative' to the Omega Speedmaster...but quite honestly it's just wishful thinking. I find that in terms of finishing, movement, etc., Bulova still feels a step below Longines. whether that's fair or not is another question...but it's the impression I get from handling the watches in person.

Bulova could get around this by making designs that people want for that design, rather than ones that are unfavorably compared to others. But that's difficult in this field, if not impossible, so I can't fault them for trying the path of least resistance.

>even the smaller Mark 40 beats out the modern Lunar Pilot in terms of finishing and potential ability. Performance will be comparable IF the watch is adjusted to the owner, like mine. The price is comparable as well.

Maybe I'm not clear, so I'd like to be.

Does anyone ask, 'why is the Rolex Submariner a better alternative to the Omega Seamaster'? No, because the Rolex is superior, and everyone knows it.

Interestingly enough, when it comes to designs, no one puts up a YouTube video talking about the...'best alternative to the Universal Geneve Poulrouter'. There is no alternative...you get the real thing, or you go home.

So, the point I'm getting at is that the Lunar Pilot will always be a cope; partially due to the use of a quartz movement vs. a mechanical, but also because it'll never be perceived as the original intent. Obviously, it's far less expensive than a Moonwatch...but the cheapness manifests itself in the fit, finish, and experience of wearing the watch on the wrist. There is no argument to be made not to save up and buy a Moonwatch and forego the Lunar Pilot, other than the personal reasons of liking the design or the quartz accuracy (which are both valid reasons to decide upon).

Watches are stupid...lol

Should I buy the Tissot Gentleman or the PRX as my first watch?

My taste is leaning more towards the Gentleman, but I find the PRX more interesting.
Also, I'd love my next watch, after a few years, to be an Omega Aqua Terra, which would replace the Gentleman, but it wouldn't replace the PRX...

So, what do you recommend?

i just looked up what a "chronometer" actually is. it's used for navigation at sea. wow, no modern watch has any business being called a chronometer. i'm pretty sure 99% of people using watches labeled as such would have no idea how to perform celestial navigation.

also makes me kinda sad how much modern technology as removed the necessity to learn complex skills. and i suppose that there's also less and less mechanical invention.

Yes, Holy Grail, as coined by the late great Chuck Maddox after he found one, didn't buy it, and unexpected spent lots of time looking for another one. Of all the Lemania 5100 variants in Speedmaster, this one is the most coveted due to the best legibility, relatively low production numbers, and sheer beauty.

>>17836820
The prices have skyrocketed, no doubt. If you really want one, just start saving. At the end of the day, no mechanical watch purchase today is emotion-free or a 'requirement'; they're all luxuries, even if they're 100$. You don't have to justify your purchase to anyone; all you have to do is be 100% happy with your purchase and wear it as much as you can.

If you do start seriously searching for one, just be aware that there are 3 known dials, 2 known bezels, 2+ handsets, 2 types of endlinks, and 2 types of crystals, in addition to other small details that you have to sift through. Just doing a Chrono24 search brings you some fully original, some with replacement parts, and some odd frankenwatches (though not necessarily made that way to rob anyone). As with any vintage watch, you should know your shit before dropping the dough.
