>I only buy watches with history. History is a prerequisite to purchase a watch. Look and feel are not good enough reasons to purchase. My wardrobe is old money Italian labels. Don't drive a Tesla either. Only a bitch would care about how nice something looks first and not see the two things in combination. No.

The issue with normalizing Spring Drives is that the lack of escapement means less potential wear, which means longer servicing intervals.

Less servicing means a reduction on a potential revenue stream. I don't think Seiko realized that what they came up with with the Spring Drive was that it was just too good that it just doesn't work with planned obsolescence. Hell, the only reason why I see people want their GS to be serviced before the 10 year mark is because they'd like their watch cases be polished back to full Zaratsu finish, since as gorgeous as it is to look at, the lack of aberrations in a near microscopic level means that it's also a scratch magnet in the process.

It's purely speculation, though knowing how shit non leaded solder is and how every electrician bitches about it, but if you had to indentify a weakness of the Spring Drive system it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out to be IC and not the time tested mechanical components.
Whether it's so bad that Seiko replaces the ICs every service as
>>17826701 says I don't know. I doubt it, but I've never seen their service sheet and I don't know if the tri-syncro regulator or whatever it's called is even touched when you send a SD watch in at all to have the mechanicals oiled etc.

Thanks Anon. It was a grail of mine for decades, so I'm happy as punch to have one. It's a daily driver, and it performs spectacularly. You can get the non-Speedmaster case ones with the Lemania 5100 inside for just over 3 or 4k USD, but this particular model is the most desirable and legible, thus the significantly higher cost today. That, and the general rarity of this piece (around 2000 made, over only 2 years).

>>17826630
Nice ones!

>>17826668
When I got my 1861 Hesalite generic Speedy, it was around 3500USD for a scratched no-box-no-papers model from Japan. It's still the same now (there's one for 3375). If you buy the bottom of the barrel and send it into servicing, it should come back 'as new'. It'll be cheaper to do that than to buy full set 1861. The 3861 however is superior in nearly every technical way that matters, so the prices on those will stay high for quite some time. Such is life.

>>17826721
Neither have I, and I know 2 people who own them. They love them, and wear them a lot...so it seems a proven technology.

>>17826764
Shipping with insurance, sign-for, tracking...everything. It does exist, and watches go through this like any other small luxury good. True, you have to hope that nothing happens in transit (which is the scariest part of the experience, desu), but once it's delivered, a sigh of relief is jettisoned by both the seller and the buyer. If you're doing person to person, then sometimes people fly out to deliver in person to avoid the hassle.

>In the future, Casio hopes that as a more cost-effective solution it will be able to connect all of its watches directly to the Internet. This would be a step above the current atomic clock radio signal technology which works well in Japan, but has limited utility in many other parts of the world. For now, Casio is experimenting with Bluetooth technology, but it admits this is a short-term solution. Eventually, it wants to experiment with LTE and other mobile data broadcasting in its watches so that they can always be accurate, anywhere in the world, and still enjoy the G-Shock’s legendary level of being “worry-free.”
This article is from 2016, before the introduction of their popular Bluetooth watches. I think if you ask them today their answer would be very different. Bluetooth went from an 'experiment' to their main feature. I don't think they will ever get rid of multiband completely since it is very cheap and easy to integrate into models, heck, they could just keep making the same basic multiband squares until the end of time and people will always buy them. They have introduced bluetooth only models, so in the future there will certainly be fewer multiband G-Shocks.

>lack of escapement means less potential wear, which means longer servicing intervals
you service watches to remove old lube and apply new, not to replace the palet fork because it wore out. this applies to spring drive just as much as any other movement with moving parts.
>Less servicing means a reduction on a potential revenue stream
no one services their watch.
>Hell, the only reason why I see people want their GS to be serviced before the 10 year mark
see above. it's common for rolex watches to never be serviced during the original owners life.

spring drive isn't more popular because the swiss spent the last decades convincing everyone that there is something inherently special about mechanical watches.

Look at that beautiful guilloche sector dial. The raised Tachymetre track inside the case rather than on the bezel. The symmetry of the dial face with markers all around. The cut-off arabics at 12 and 6 to satisfy mechanical engineering autism.

The small seconds at six. The fuck-off-ness of a chronograph without an hours counter. The fact that the movement came with one, and a date, and you cut the fucker apart to remove not add functions to the watch purely for aesthetic reasons and uniqueness. The rotating markers inside the registers so the wearer can't even properly read the minutes counter.

I fucking love IWC.

I have a theory:

Of all the good luxury watches, Rolexes are the worst looking. The reason for this is twofold. 1) Rolex wad the pioneer of many iconic modern watch designs, which means that Rolex set the standard upon which other companies made improvements. 2) In order to compete with Rolex, other companies need to make better-looking designs.

I'm not saying Rolex has bad designs. I'm just saying that other companies won't be able to sell watches in the $7k+ price range unless they look better than Rolexes.

It depends on the context. I set my work watch at the beginning of the work week, sometimes maybe 10 or 15 seconds or so fast, and I just let it go for the rest of the week. If I'm going out under circumstances I'll actually need to know what time it is I'll set it to the second before I go out. But for a watch I wear while I'm just milling about the house doing chores it doesn't really matter. This post actually reminded me I needed to set the watch I'm wearing right now because the date needed updated, it was almost 2 minutes behind. But it's a watch I just put on after work and usually I just mill about the house and fall asleep wearing it, so it isn't that critical that the time is exactly right.

Longines is mall tier trying to be entry level luxury, i hate the branding and invicta logo.
I hate the fliegers, the Sinn looking one, i guess that's a taste. The bronze one reminds me of 2015 when it was a thing. You're wasting money on Orient-tier shit.
The Squale, i like their retro models, everything else i disregard.
The Tudor, you picked the worst colorways possible, but solid model.
White ceramic Rado, who even wear those? Maybe for women who don't like watches and just want to accessorize.
Bulgari, are you trolling?
The Seiko, can't argue about the brand but the design is 2005 tacky.

I've been thinking about getting a bronze watch, can someone red pill me? How do you take care of your patina? Do you ever have an ugly patina come in and need to clean it up and start over? Do you just wear it to the beach often and keep it in a plastic bag to keep it from shit humidity air? Do you have to work the bezel often to make sure it doesn't fuse up?

When my watxh is dirty I literally just wash my hands, let water from the tap wash over the top of the watch, and I dry it off as I dry my hands. That's with watches on bracelets and rubber, you couldn't really do that with leather. Even then, just a little water on a cloth is fine.

If you're happy paying whatever they're charging for them these days for a 100% chinese made watch using the usual loopholes to identify as "swiss", then you should be fine. You'll hear about as many qc issues with them as you would with any brand. Nothing particularly egregious or commendable comes immediately to mind but you should do your own research; you might come across that one instance of shitty CS that'll put you off them entirely. Or that one instance of good CS that tips the balance.

Unless you're buying from a top brand, you run the risk of getting a case made out of metallic "mystery meat". A chinesium bronzey alloy of the usual tin and copper but also usually copious amounts of lead which will slowly poison you. Even with established makers, you can't really be sure unless they specifically address their alloy in the specs. Bronze also leaves a hideous green residue, especially on hot, sweaty days. It also smells. The yt shills don't tell you that.

Bronze is a meme 10 years past its use-by date. You missed the window boyo

For me, I curated a list of watches I wanted and added/subtracted from that list for about a decade before starting to buy. It really cemented which watches I wanted, which ones were passing fancies, and which ones were utterly stupid. In this process I tried on as many of the ones I wanted as I could, and spent time with them. Then, I started buying. I did have a 'holy grail' watch in the mix, and that is my grail Speedy. Other than that, every other watch was, in my eyes, 'perfect'. This meant that while other watches might come out, none could compete with the design aesthetic of what I loved in the watches in my list.

This doesn't mean that everyone will love the same watches I love. It just means that I figured out what I wanted, tested that desire, and then put it into practice when I was sure. Now I have no regrets, and I'm done buying. I haven't bought a watch in over a year, nor do I have any desire to do so. I still go watch 'shopping' (you know, where you go into a boutique to try on the latest design or whatever), but truth be told, I don't see myself buying ever again.

>pic is an example: to me, this is a perfect diver. Perfect bracelet fit, perfect dial, perfect handset, perfect case (including HE valve), perfect thickness (or thinness, depending on your point of view), etc. It's perfect for my eyes, but not necessarily for anyone else. Doesn't matter, because I love it and wear it.
