>I only buy watches with history. History is a prerequisite to purchase a watch. Look and feel are not good enough reasons to purchase. My wardrobe is old money Italian labels. Don't drive a Tesla either. Only a bitch would care about how nice something looks first and not see the two things in combination. A cheap and meaningless watch is irrelevant and basically will never be remembered by anybody. You would only buy it if you won't be remembered either.

Pic related is of three open-heart models in my price range (sizes are not to scale). For all these models, the center bearing of the exposed balance wheel is not aligned with the horizontal center of the watch (green lines). Sure, the Hamilton and Tissot supposedly both share the same ETA calibre (supposedly, ETA's H-10), but even with the Baume & Mercier, that bearing is not aligned.

Can we have an educated horological discussion about why these models---any many other models not included in the picture---are not aligned? Is there something fundamental to a movement's design why alignment is not (easily) accomplished?

Thanks for your input.

It's not aligned because it was never intended to be seen from the front, as it was never intended to be an open dial. When shitty brands take a generic movement and make a generic hole in the dial, this is what happens.
Only watches that have been planned from before making the movement can escape this hell, and most of the times they either do a total skeletonized concept (like PP), or they go exploded movement design, (like AP). In both cases, the price is total bonkers.

Now it is a dressy watch more than sporty, and the movement is not an upgrade at all, the watch already had good accuracy because it was a top movement and finely tuned, so the new watch is just a worse version and more expensive, and if it fails it will take a lot of servicing time and cost. A quartz watch has superior accuracy and precision and can be manufactured at a fraction of the cost of old watches.
Quartz which changed the world. A quartz watch may have an analog dial and may be made of gold and adorned with as many precious stones as any of watch. (Let's be frank, after quartz, mechanical watches should be referred to as old or even ancient technology.)

So then, it's justified to pose the simple question, why ever buy a mechanical watch? Well, because of the mechanics (i.e., gears, spring, and movement thereof) and the finery of special handiwork such as perlage and guilloche, silly! And if the mechanics also command a premium fee, then why not have the ability to actuality see those special mechanics and handiwork? Therefore, it's almost expected to have an open heart or skeleton watch with a mechanical.

If I'm going to spend the money on a mechanical watch, then I want to see those mechanics. If not, then I'm just getting a quartz, digital or analog.

tl;dr Buy quartz if you're not seeing the mechanics. (Pic unrelated)

I'm selling my 2017 Seamaster today. Right before covid I realized how much I was hating on all my automatic watches for losing time.

It was even within spec but it just loses too much time to be useful. Perhaps if I was just wearing it as jewelry like Rolex owners do I wouldn't care, but my watches need to be accurate, I make money off my time. Outside of something special I just can't go for automatic watches anymore.

Maybe when I retire and the only thing I care about being on time for is my pickleball reservation I'll jump back into autos but for my money making years no.

Pic unrelated? That watch is in stock on the official site and hundreds of other authorized and unauthorized sellers. It's going to be available for a while. Most limited edition G-Shocks have enough quantity that anyone that wants one can get one even months after release, sometimes even discounted. Rarely do they make numbered releases or small limited editions that sell out fast but those are usually collaborations mainly for collectors.

OP here. I bought the watch because I liked it and I could afford it, simple as that. Right size, design, functions, etc. I can dress it up or down and it makes me feel good when I wear it. While I do like learning about the history of watch brands and their milestones, it is by no means a requirement for me when it comes to buying a watch. Not sure why that upsets you so much.

I agree, autos are just jewelry. They are just half a level above those "watch cufflinks" in terms of accuracy.

The problem is there are people out there that believe they are reliable tools, however some are trolls on /wt/.

I've been in the "watch journalism" space for many years now. Everyone out here has multiple autos and changes them based on mood and outfit, they agree it's a fashion item. When anyone them flies or are around the house they wear apple watches. Some of them publicly admit it, some only say it to other "journalists" on discord but they all do.

Invictas are future classics. First they'll go entirely out of fashion and many mechanical ones will get discarded as getting them repaired won't be economical but a few decades later they will be regarded as the most iconic watches of the first quarter of the 21st century. They'll be highly collectable, especially amongst a new generation of SEA watch collectors, with the most obscene and morbidly oversized limited edition models fetching exorbitant prices. legit Rolex posters who just show their watch with no text in their post

people with legitimate questions about watches, horology, et cetera, and get one real response for every five insults

Who said it was a popular model? I was joking when i said mine was famous, and anyway famous does not equal popular. It's a hidden gem from 60 years ago, they were produced for less than 4 years so there aren't that many around to begin with, alao not many people know about it, the focus is mainly on vintage divers and modern Seikos. As to why Seiko doesn't make them again, beats me, they definitely should, it's a great design and pretty unique, if i had any say i would reissue it under Grand Seiko as a DayDate alternative. Knowing how modern Seiko is right now though they would most likely fuck it up, it'd be too big and too thick so they might as well not.
I just love the watch, simple as.

That's not true for any watch but you don't bat an eye at $5k+ steel watch with a basic movement.
>Why couldn't they just have it widely available for a reasonable price?
They have the same watch for $500 if you don't want to pay for titanium, for $300 if you don't want a to pay for a steel band and bracelet, and for $100 if you don't want to pay for a steel case. You have infinite choices.

It varies too much from model to model to express easily but usually you get better bands as you go up in price. I'm surprised you got over 10 years from an F91W strap, I think I barely got 3. I feel like they are almost designed to break. I think once you get to a basic G-Shock they last longer but it depends on your wear pattern. I think cleaning your watch regularly helps.

that's because it's been completely unused, battery still runs fine
it's been more than 10 too, but somewhere around there

Don't know what this crap is, but spending tons of money on an oiler is pointless. Invest in a good set of screwdrivers, a pair of good tweezers, and proper oils. Anything else can be bought at AliExpress. Also, you do not necessarily need 2000 EUR screwdrivers, just make sure they are properly sharpened.
