Daily reminder

>But the name "chypre" (chypvra etc), apart from any geographical connotations, had travelled in aromatic stanzas throughout the Middle Ages, Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment thanks to the vigorous commerce of the enterprising Cypriots who dabbled in a feminine product with an added scent: their famous "Cipria" powder, a cosmetic face powder -presented by various different local "houses"- which was further aromatized with the cypriot aromatic blends they had excelled at for centuries (And which, by all accounts, judging by the later specimens circulating into the 20th century, smelled not far off what we consider a chypre fragrance today!)

in-depth review from a trusted source (1/3):

Well isn’t this just a gorgeous perfume? Jean-Paul Guerlain seems to have co-opted the multitude of notes and massive blending of his predecessor Jacques Guerlain and created a lush, creamy, sandalwood-based oriental seemingly an ode to both his Grandfather’s work and the Middle East, which itself inspired many of Jacques’ creations. “Samsara” is sanskrit for the circle of birth and rebirth, signifying the eventual path to Nirvana, and there is little else heavenly as this fragrance. Early formulations of Samsara (1989) are also noted for their heavy use of Mysore sandalwood in the composition, and although no blended Western perfume is really a good reference for the now over-harvested and scarce prized sandalwood variety, Samsara in its original configuration was among some of the richest displays of the note in the base of a Western perfume, making vintage bottles particularly prized by sandalwood fans. Modern Samsara does what it can to achieve the same accord admirably, and is recognizable as the same perfume, but extremely divisive opinions leading to combativeness can happen when discussing Samsara among enthusiasts.

>>17775058
2/3

My review sample hails from an opaque red plastic 3.4oz/100ml eau de parfum example of undetermined age used as a tester for those looking to compare observations. The opening of Samara has a fantastically sharp chypre plume of bergamot, peach, lemon, and galbanum, like a thicker, greener, drier Mitsouko (1919), bridging the fresher aspects of that style with the woody creamy base which follows. Jasmine and rose do their fleshy indolic dance atop orris butter and clean ylang-ylang, with narcissus and violet leading up the chorus and disappearing into the harmony. The sandalwood has already made its presence known even by the heart, but its dryness is passed with coumarin, amber, vanilla, musk, and a touch of animalic benzoin to build up a buttery finish which is the coveted finale of the perfume. The florals are definitely more stern than in Shalimar (1924) and the finish less vanillic, powdery, or like the foundation makeup that often bore a proxy of Guerlinade, but that core house note is still there. I find Samsara perfectly suitable for a dandy but less flamboyant guys won’t want to go near this stuff, as its tune is dead center unisex at best but will most likely read feminine to the average nose.

3/3

Various concentrations and reformulations to account for price points and the dwindling (then depleted) amounts of Mysore make Samsara impossible to rank on performance, but my EdP example in the red plastic bottle was strong at first, then soft but ever-present for hours and hours afterwards, which is not entirely different from the grandiose wake of fragrance Shalimar leaves, just scaled back further to more-contemporary tolerances. Samsara along with Héritage (1992) would be among the last of the classically-styled Guerlain perfumes made by a member of the Guerlain family given widespread release, and signified the end of an era for the prestigious house that would enter into more trend-focused compositions to keep the boat afloat after the house was sold by the family to LVMH. Samsara is just plain gorgeous for many more reasons than I can fit into a review, but if lovely green citrus and rounded florals over creamy sandalwood and vanilla don’t at least sound a little appealing to you, I’m not entirely sure you’re in the right place. Samsara is best in median temperatures but really is neutral enough to be worn any time, although its character absolutely leans romantic to my nose. Very much worth a sniff in any form, but obviously vintage preferred. Thumbs up!

it's a very well regarded, old school, classy women's fragrance from the brand that epitomized old school French perfumery. lots of complexity but past the opening it mostly reads as floral-powdery-sandalwood, quite calming. the kind of thing a mature woman would wear to formal occasions, but might read a bit more unisex nowadays as modern womens perfumery doesn't really smell like this anymore.

The three samples I got from prin are not even in fragrantica, so makes me think that once they are gone they are gone. In ecuación you can get 5ml for 60 euros. I just don't really like the decants they use in that store, they are simply not good enough. Will test them these days and report.

there are also bigger 12ml "pen" decants with a pen clip on them, they're really great too. in which country do you live? if we live in the same one i can post the links

I tend to agree. Le Cri (autocorrected to le cringe lol) I like, but I dont quite understand the 5 star rating. Its a nice iris, raspberry, rose frag that smells somewhat juvenile and is fairly linear. Azemour kind of burns out into the hay/oakmoss thing quickly, but its by far the most natural citrus I've ever smelled. LADDM I really dont like at all.

>> No.17775322

le cri i thought had some very beautiful accords, but i didn’t have all day to examine its development which is what turin raved on about. azemours, like you said, seemed like a very well done representation of an orange, but little more. maybe i’ve just been spoiled by my roudnitskas, but i expect my citrus fragrances to say something more than just representing the fruit as is.
LADDM was stunning to me, i thought tania sanchez’s review was on the money. ACDD seemed slightly worse, like the same thing but more dense and linear.

Blogpost time. New to /frag/, started working in an office and making enough money that dropping a couple hundred isn't gonna bother me. I've read through the Turin books and have just finished my first round of 1ml samples. Chosen based on notes, self perception, and some memes.

Terre D'Hermes EdP: Great citrus opening, and I enjoyed the depth of that "mineral" note. Seemed a little faint to me, and unfortunately, the sharp smell sort of bothered my stomach. Something in this vein for work.

Black Orchid EdP: I really liked this. Good floral and depth, was told it projected and before bed / waking up the next morning I really smelled the chocolate note. I'm sure I can find something comparable but cheaper/less """masstige""".

Tauer LADDM: Delightful as soon as I put it on my skin. I probably liked this and Black Orchid the most. Pleasant blend of spice upfront, dusty and sweet through the day. It's always pleasant to get a whiff. I kept my sample for reference and ordered a sample of LADAS.

Dior Sport (2021): Interesting. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but that long and lingering incense note was both the best and worst part for me. I need to wear it again to pinpoint what I disliked. I'm looking for a different incense scent than this either way.

Black Afgano: Not for me. I projected well, but I wasn't confident wearing it.

ELO Jasmin et Cigarette: Pleasant but simple jasmine to me. Perhaps it was the day, but I felt very much at peace when I wore this. after I reapplied during the day, the chemicals brought tears to my eye. I've ordered a sample of Fat Electrician to give this house one more chance.

Bvlgari Eau de The Rouge: discontinued, so it was a pointless sample. Sampling Memo Winter Palace to try to find a red tea scent as I enjoyed it, while it lasted.

next sample batch is winter palace, LADAS, CdG 2, Civet and NY Intense. I've been smelling in department stores and bought a 100ml of Habit Rouge EdP after buying into the hype and smelling it.

Machrie has been my best blind buy, the more I wear the more I appreciate the quality of its ingredients and composition, as simple as it is.
Cistus, lots of slightly stinky ambergris (synthetic I imagine, but much closer to the real thing than straight up ambroxan if so), mineral without being ozonic, with a tiny bit of sage and patchouli emerging in the drydown as the cistus subsides.
A great warm weather frag, and an unusual one at that considering it designer juice, I can't but recommend it.

You can literally wear any of them, they are all fine for weddings. There's nothing extraordinary stinky in there, just a bunch of clean fragrances. Personally, I'd choose Platinum Egoiste, although suit + PE might feel like an average day of work and not like a wedding.
Been to three weddings this year and have one upcoming (I'm at the age where every non-academic friend is getting married and covid delayed some of them), really doesn't matter what you wear as long as you smell good. Plenty of others will be wearing whatever fragrances, literally the only one they own, without overthinking it. For example, I've smelled Jazz Club in 35°C heat and I absolutely despise that stuff, but it is what it is.

It's all individual/subjective. You don't have to spray more if you can't bear it yourself. No reason to make yourself uncomfortable. Whether or not you go noseblind is also just as subjective, and that doesn't just depend on the person, it also depends on the fragrance. If you wear fragrances for yourself, anyway (as it should be), you also don't need to worry about which one your wear, at all. The choice you make is obviously one you like, otherwise you wouldn't have a bottle of it. Like I said, you're overthinking it. Most people have a single bottle ranging from drug store trash to overpriced faux-niche and they only use that and nothing else. They don't have the burden of choice and they don't want to have it. Just do it as they do. Pick what you feel like wearing and just wear it.

sampled l'habit rouge, this one is totally not what I was going for, but I like it a lot. guerlain vetiver matches very well from the notes, but smells like burnt rubber to me. could be a side effect, because I had l'homme ideal in that spot a few hours earlier and washed it off with soap. I get a feeling that it's not all habit rouge that I am smelling, but rather the blend of the two, but if I smell it up close it's really that rubbery sensation.
russian tea could also fit my description, as well as:

Frens, I need advice since Im starting to lose my mind a bit. Ive tried almost everythinhg at sephora, living in france helps sometimes. Im trying to create a year round set of perfume to wear.
I thought about :
- Dior Homme Parfum for winter which I just bought a few days ago
- Platinium Egoiste for Spring / Autumn ?
- Dior Homme Sport for the Summer ?

I also want to buy Fahrenheit Parfum, JPG Le Male le parfum or even Eau des BAVX but it seems redondant with DHP ?

Ive already tried Le Male, le Male le parfum(extra nice) which are both very nice for a daily wear.
Last year I bought Fahrenheit EDT and Givenchy Gentleman Reserve Privee. Exceptional odor but both deceiving projection and longvety at least on my skin.
Also tried Bois Imperial, very nice but something is off after three or four hour. A pungent smell comes strong. Sad

Any ideas ? How do you guys organize your yearly and seasonnal rotation ? What about perfume for the same season ? I like to be well organized sometimes and not thinking about that

I used to wear JPG Le Male le Parfum all day long from sept to july, used to get compliments all the time. It was lasting the whole day. Im about to pull the trigger on 200ml bottle for 88eur and wear that as no brainer so i can stop all that thinking about smelly water.
but then again when do i wear DHP ?? summoning all high IQ here

Sprayed it on just now for the first time in a while and I actually like it more now than when I first bought it. I haven't used it as much as I'd liked cause the marshmallow and vanilla notes really popped when I first got it and it was pretty off-putting to wear outside for me. Though not really a gourmand like some reviews on Fragrantica mention.

Now it's a bit dustier (after 2 years) and more Chanel-old lady like a less modern Coromandel. To me it's like Patchouli Absolu in that it plays opposing vibes like a sophisticated-rugged well, except Psychedelique is more unisex sophisticated-hippie.

You all hate Sauvage because it's throws the reality of the world in your face every time you smell it.
Sauvage isn't brilliant, it isn't exceptional, it isn't magical. It is simply well put together, friendly, out going, doesn't quit and manages to fit in without changing in almost every situation. And that is more than good enough because the overwhelming majority of people love it. And this is documented time and time again, video after video and post after post. People love Sauvage.
Sauvage as a fragrance is what you wish you could be as a person, but aren't. Instead you'll sit around circle jerking the rare ingredients and exotic creations, lauding each other for your superior taste, looking down on the plebs who shower Sauvage with compliments. Why don't they compliment you? Isn't it obvious how much better your fragrance is? It's niche for gods sakes!
Nevermind that you don't actually understand what niche even means.
So you'll post and post, seething and pretending to laugh at your own wit each time you meme about Bois Imperial. But one black day you'll crack and do the unthinkable: You'll buy Sauvage. You won't post about it here of course, my god why would you? You have a completely anonymous reputation to protect! You'll spray it on and part of you will be ashamed and feeling transgressive, but a small sliver of you will feel hopeful for a change. Maybe, just maybe, today I'll be noticed. Today I'll get a compliment. I just want to feel what it's like one time, everyone else loves this stuff, surely there's one compliment left for me?
I genuinely pity you when you still won't get a compliment and are forced to confront the reality that even a jovial titan like Sauvage cannot mask how rotten, desolate and unappealing you are.

So keep shitting on Sauvage, spray your niche of the month or whatever arab oil is getting hawker now. Much like a tranny pretends to be a woman you are equally delusional in your claims of superiority. Cope and seethe.

I tried some Aqua di Gio Profumo and Profondo today.
There's something about Profumo that smells like an old man but combined with some nice stuff. It smells like some kind of thyme or rosemary or something. Are there any other designer fragrances like this? I really really like it
Profondo is ok, but I feel like it's somewhat generic

i find the name acqua di gio “profondo” extraordinarily funny, as if there’s anything profound about acqua di gio or armani as a whole.

Lalique pour homme. Bentley is just ok and Azzaro is too grandpaish for me to wear personally.

Been experimenting with grandpa colognes. Pino Sylvestre came in today. I like the herbal complexity but the sweet syrupy note is somewhat off-putting. 4711 is of course a staple at this point and girls surprisingly like it.

I have Cerruti 1881 coming in tomorrow after the tester was surprisingly a personal favorite of recent memory and a hit with my girlfriend. What other "dated" or old guy fragrances should I try? I've been wanting to get my hands on Kouros but I can't find a tester.

Bump limit is still 310.

Pino Silvestre smells like plastic to me and nothing else. I was amazed that people wear it voluntarily.
Anyway, you want Estee Lauder for Men, Giorgio for Men and Paco Rabanne pour Homme. Those are at least the cheapest ones I can think of right now, considering you seem to be interested in full bottles.

People just stop posting when the limit is getting close, 300 is the psychological line
