Try one and see for yourself.
I have a Submariner (40mm) and an Explorer (36mm). Both have the same dial diameter so they kind of have the same "wrist presence".
Also what really matters is lug to lug imo. I would never go above 48mm from to lug to lug but I can go up to 42mm in diameter easily. I know it's hard to understand for raging retards with a strong small dick complex (there are dozens in these threads) but diameter doesn't tell much about how a watch will fit your wrist.

I guess it's a conscious choice then. Too bad it's a pretty unremarkable field watch. >>17773430
That's the biggest problem with designing your own watches. If you only have access to get a couple different movements and have no ability to modify or put modules on them in any way, there's only so much you can do with your watches. If you use Miyota movements your watches are going to look really similar to every other watch that uses miyota movements - They're all going to be within the same range of diameter and thickness, they're all probably going to either have 20mm or 22mm lug width because it's almost stupid to use any other lug width, they're all probably going to use the same or similar bracelets if you use bracelets, you're probably going to use screw down crowns because everyone wants them... I'm basically just describing every microbrand watch at this point. Every microbrand watch with a date window at 6 o'clock you already know is using a miyota 9 series movement and probably has every feature I just described. Just about all you can really play with is the dial and bezel colors, dial material, and what you're marking on the dial and rehaut and bezel. Everything else is almost in stone.

I would start with a very simple movement. My first watch would be one with an integrated bracelet, following the trend, but it would be more of a dress watch with an integrated bracelet. No screws, no industrial shapes, something like a Vacheron 222. It would have a Clous de Paris bezel, a simple dial like a vintage Calatrava with a double index at twelve, dauphine hands, and a bracelet similar to the 222.

If I were to make a microbrand these are the kind of watches I would be inspired by.

Now my question is: do you think there is a gap in the market or do I just have a super specific taste that most people don't share? These have a practical design but nowadays watches have become jewelry so I understand people would want them to look fancy.

Sports watches make everyone in this thread unhappy. Every sports watch that isn't a Rolex is doomed to be compared to a Rolex (and - let's be honest - be ridiculed). Even the anons who (pretend to) dislike Rolex can't stop obsessing over it.
Dress watches can't be called Rolex cope because Rolex has always sucked at dress watches. They're also widely available on the second hand market and not that expensive. You can find 3 years old Reverso under 5k, old Omega/IWC/Universal Genève under 3k, etc. There are even some cool vintage Vacheron in the 6-8k price range.

tl;dr: Rolex has ruined sports watches forever. If you can't buy one, just get a vintage dress watch, a Tank or a Reverso and be happy with it.

I actually quite like watches that use the same/similar designs but are immediately recognisable as a different brand. Pagani Design is a good example. I like that someone that cannot spend thousands can still get a nice looking watch even if the movement isn’t as good.

This isn't 2020 anymore. Even if they don't have what you want in stock, just put an order in and you'll have it in a few months, tops, excepting the extremely popular models like the GMT-Master II or the steel Daytona, or the rare dial variants.

It's people who want a brand name they can't afford, therefore getting a rep or trying to buy a genuine watch you can't afford over just getting a homage of the watch you like and then moving on with your life is coping for something. I don't believe there is such a thing, at least not in my book. Thinner means it fits under cuffs much better without hanging up. End of the day there are no rules, despite how many butt-flustered, angry assholes screech ITT and in the "community" in general. It's all up to you and your personal taste. End of the day it's just a watch. It's not that serious.

Thickness is really important, especially if it's a watch that you want to be able to wear on a NATO strap because a watch that's on the thick side will be even worse with two layers of nylon strap under it. Thinner is always better. The thickness of the seiko 5s was one of the main reasons I decided to look elsewhere for work shitters. Personally I wouldn't wear an automatic 3 hand watch over 12mm as there are a lot of options under 12mm and it just doesn't make much sense to tolerate more than that. That's actually one of the biggest reasons the Daytona is the king of chronographs as chronos are often 14mm or sometimes even thicker while the Daytona manages to be just barely over 12mm.
