/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - STILL HANDSEWN SEASON EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them an

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

Sorry you have ogre feet. Anyone with a standard D-width foot can wear Lofgrens comfortably. You are also getting what you pay for considering their build quality is arguably has a higher attention to detail and that literally none of their components and labor put into making them involves any slave or underpaid labor. Wesco doesn't even sit within the same ball park, not to say that Wesco is shit, but their components and build quality is without a doubt a step below in comparison. Like, who the fuck thought that they should make an engineer with an undersized thermoplastic heel counter? Thats just fucking retarded. If you are spending $500+ on a pair of boots, at the very minimum your heel counter design should have enough volume and shape and also be made of veg tan instead of some plastic bullshit

this cost over $1,5k btw
it's that meme (not) shell cordovan, that hasn't been shaved down to the actual shell layer
the shell is completely sandwiched and hidden inside the leather, so it might as well not even be there
the advantage is supposed to be that it rolls like shell and the top grain has a hard backing to be compressed against so it naturally darkens and patinas more
and yet still has all the grain wrinkles visible
paying all this money to have something that looks like red wing's copper rough and tough in the end

also that is more than 3 months wear, if the ammount of heel drag wasn't enough of a dead giveaway

I guarantee you buy your boots in generic US sizes. Ironically as much as you spout about real bootmakers you probably have literally no idea how your boots are even made. If you're going to buy boots like this you better be buying custom-fitted, because at that price point it should be expected. It's the footwear equivalent of buying an off the rack designer suit and then being elitist towards people who don't wear an overpriced and expensive suit. You have no idea how anything is actually made and as much as you want to spout about "the craft" you have literally no clue who's making your boots and unironically recommended Chinese boot makers. My redwing 875 shrink a lot if I don’t wear them for a few days. Like I can barely fit my feet in them after the weekend. The leather insole cups. Is this pic the issue? Looks like glue seeped out. But maybe it’s just from the factory and irrelevant. Either way how do I fix this/ why is this happening. I love these boots but I might have to switch to something else. I’ve cleaned and conditioned them every two weeks since I got them 5/6 months ago. Does redwing use defective glue for their insoles maybe? Or is it the tanning process? I do very hard manual labor 5 days a week. But I feel like I’ve taken care of them and this is a bit frustrating. Any help would be appreciated

I mostly just brush them off well and then apply a bit of oil. I’m aware it can cause hardware to come out it’s not even close to that becoming an issue.

I use my work boots daily for work and condition them maybe 2 or 3 times a year. that's a deep clean and condition though.

dust is a problem for boots to be sure but so is overconditioning.
consider using a teflon spray so the dust wipes off easy.

for regular work i put boot dogs in them at the end of the day and if they start to get smelly then I'll put them on a dryer.
for wet outdoorsy work then dryer every day.

>Are boot driers okay or do they get too hot?
the one I've got doesn't get hot at all. the air is gently warmed just enough to move it up into the boot without a fan.

>What if I build one and just used a pc fan with no heat?
could work, but with the cost of materials these days I don't know that you'd save any money vs storebought.

overrated as fuck and i fell for the meme myself
absolutely not worth it if you live outside US and have to import them
the leather lining is so bad and so cheap, i wish they just came unlined, incredibly stiff and painfull to break in, lining creates folds inside the shoe
the leo last sucks imo, not anatomical in the slithest, toe pointed way towards the middle of the last, which tends to bend your big toe inwards, unless you have bunions already
also it's hard to find a grant stone pair in CXL that doesn't look like a wrinkled ballsack broken in, they have to use lower grade leather
the patterns look really unrefined, the moc toes and loafer are really goofy looking

alden is so much better in terms of looks, fit, finishing, leather quality, it's not even funny
wyatt gilmore can't even copy them right, because they are just inferior in practically every way and outseide the US they cost the same

I have similar feelings --especially about the fit-- having owned a GS Diesel in Brown CXL and an Alden Indy in Brown CXL, but I assumed that my GS felt way worse than than Alden because I bought it secondhand so it's still a bit more moulded to the original owner. I don't think GS is a bad boot; the stitching is probably the best in its weightclass and even above, but there's something that feels off. Its current MSRP is probably the absolute max it deserves to be at...with $325 probably being a more appropriate price

They fit great normally. I tried one size larger when I got them but was too big. They are my brannock size and felt perfect when I first put them on. Pretty frustrating I love everything else about these boots. I put them on the boot dryer last night to see what would happen. Foot bed complete curled up could barely fit them on. Felt horrible for a few hours. After about 3 hours or so they felt almost normal. It’s a peet dryer and I know a few people with nicks/whites that swear by the Peet’s dryer so I think it just actually fully dried them and exacerbated what normally happens if I don’t wear them.

Yeah I think I should. Any reccs or does it even matter?

I get they need to dry but it’s like hey if I ordered 600 dollar plus nicks boots. I’m going to wear them every day for my trade right? In fact I went into nicks today since I’m close by and asked this question and she said yeah people wear them every day. I understand you should ideally dry and rotate your boots but this isn’t happening. Loggers and firefighters are not rotating their boots. They put their boots on every day and get to work. I think red wing needs to figure something out because this doesn’t seem to be an issue with the so called PNW brands. Either way I’m going to try to fix these redwings. And I’ll order shoe trees. But I think this is a manufacturing issue. The 875s are sold as work boots and they seem to fail at that. If I bought some posh dress shoes thay required this maintenance then fine. But we’re talking work boots here. People aren’t buying two sets of 600 dollar custom boots to rotate them and fuck around with shoe trees you know? Thanks for reading my diary

In my opinion, all American boot makers don’t have the best QC, but it’s not necessarily the worst. In my experience the Japanese boot makers have astronomically better QC. If I’m buying a pair of Whites though, I know that they’re going to be my every day kickers and I’m not going to obsess over some small anomaly in the stitching density or how absolutely flawless the carving of the woodmans heel is going to be. In the big picture they’re fitting, arch support, and stitching/welting is way better compared to majority of companies (especially US companies) and that’s good enough for me as a pair of every day shit kickers
