Longines is the only half decent brand at that price unless you want to go vintage

>> No.17760162

>I kind of have hope for Longines.
Swatch won't allow it to become good
>Omega's moving upmarket and that's leaving a real sweet spot for Longines to slide into.
Omega is moving but Longines isn't going to move with it because then Longines will have to compete with Tag, Breitling and Turdgay. Which is a fight they can't win. Nobody in their right mind will buy a Longines for Tag or Breitling money. It doesn't have the chops or identity. Longines has a history but nobody really thinks of THAT watch when someone says Longines. That's what will always kill it. If they took down their entire line up and came out with good (flawless) designs, and a relaunch to just below Tag prices, they might have a shot, but Swatch won't do it because it will take away marketshare from entry level Omega (which competes with Tag also).

Longines is a lost cause, otherwise I would have bought one or two, I do like the heritage. But the brand is mismanaged beyond repair.

17760164

Their problem is really that they have no identity that screams Longines. They've been around but they never had that one icon. A rival at the time, Cartier, has its icon with the Tank. Omega has the Speedie and Bond, Breitling has the Navitimer, Tag has the Carrera and Monaco. Longines has watches that were always flawed in some way. Take this piece. It's a 1:1 remake of the vintage piece and they've retained the horrible giant lugs. Look at those fangs. You could stab someone with this watch. That's the problem. Longines heritage designs were weird as fuck back then, but kind of worked in a funky way, but they look ridiculous today.

Anyone else just extremely bored of the watch industry?

Everything is so bland and safe. It's like every company is modelling themselves on Daniel Wellington(decision wise). Everything is just the same minimalistic rehash. They just offer a few dozen "iconic" models everyone and their dog has seen a million times before. Microbrands don't do anything crazy they just repeat the minimalist "disruptor" model. Not to mention the prices are ridiculous. I just saw a hamilton model going for $1600 when it was $400 in 2014. Even preowned has gone crazy. Too many normies (non enthusiasts) just buying shit up for a profit motive. They buy to speculate not buy to enjoy or collect. Now vintage junk is also 5x the previous price. Social media and brands too intertwined WIS culture is now cringe because memes are appropriated by corporate (like speedy tuesday or whatever)

Boring boring boring.

I think the problem is not necessarily the industry but the consumer.
Before cell phones, you needed a watch to tell the time.
The old fucks here can tell you that, before cell phones, someone not wearing a watch was considered odd.
Improvements in watch technology were demanded by the consumer. Since it was a necessity, it was also prone to regular changes in fashion. Considers wanted fashion-foward watches, not only retro stuff.

Now, though, watches are no longer necessary and the consumer and manufacturers are trying to figure out what they should be. Plus, now it's a luxury and not a necessity. Consumers want stuff from the golden age of watch development (approx. the 1960s) and, while there are watches out there that are completely wild, they're also so expensive that they would never get into the real mainstream.

Oh say, can you see, by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner, in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the Heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: In God We Trust
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

save your money and buy an automatic. i got picrel as my first >$100 watch. eventually put a domed sapphire on it and switched the metal band to a perlon strap. if you're going to get a battery watch, get a digital display like on a casio or something. don't get analog hands on a battery watch ever, there is a history why clocks and watches use a typical analog method of using hands to show the time. this was born out of necessity due to the mechanical nature of the movement. wearing a battery watch with analog hands is pure mimicry

This is one of the most strangely retarded take I've ever read on here. Analog hands provide the time at a glance and most importantly a much larger viewing angle. They also pair better with more formal outfits. This is indipendent of how they are powered. So there are plenty of reasons to get an analog quartz.
Also, recommending a low-budget automatic to "save money" is patently stupid. You'll throw it away after a few years because it looses to much in a day and the cost of servicing would get you a new one. Quartz is what actually makes you save money. Not saying you shouldn't buy a low-budget auto if you like it, but it's a money sink more than anything else

i can tell the time much faster on my g-shock than with any of my mechanical watches. i own both, just not battery watches with analog dials. why does a viewing angle even matter for 99.9999% of the time? so you can tell the time while you're yanking it?

What you can or can't do doesn't mean shit. A trained person reads the time much faster on analog than on digital. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOZHkakqXSQ
>why does a viewing angle even matter for 99.9999% of the time?
It can matter. You don't have to move your arm as much. You can keep doing what you were doing (like driving). By this argument, why have a watch at all, since you can always pull out your phone?
>that they are.... cheaper?
Literally never said that they are cheaper. Just cheaper to maintain. The arguments for analog quartz are: faster time reading, better viewing angles, classier look than LCDs; sturdier, lighter and more accurate than mechanicals. A bit of a stretch?
>they are durable movements that last a long time
Not as long as quartz. Quartz might last 30 years. I have 20 years old quartz shitters than run fine to this day, +/- 10 s a month.

I think I was mistaken. From what I can see the real original ones are about £570/$720 and you can only get them on their official ali-express page and they come with a steel back. Every other website that sells them is a sub-manufacturer that buys the movements from the original company and they all come with a display case back so you can see the movement. Even the official looking https://seagull1963.com I think is the "red star" licensed copy.

Not sure why you'd go for the $700+ version if all that is true.

>digital is faster and easier to read for all people
Not true.

On digital you the numbers but a traditional face with hands represents the time graphically, it's basically a pie chart.

Not only you see that now is 16:41, you see that since you started doing what you're doing was this much and there's that much until you will be doing something else.

In the braindead zoomer terms a minute hand running around the face is like a loading progress bar, say you told yourself:
>i will be working really hard for 20 minutes then I go have a coffe/tea/smoke/nap
You will look at the watch face and not only you will see that right now is the current time, you will see that the minute hand moved 2 and a half sectors artound the face that means you are more than halfway there.

Having a dry number and having a visual representation of the time is not the same.

Yeah this is why I'm not a fan of most expensive brands, they're largely just trading off the brand name at this point. Big gripe I have with Rolex , meet 2 people with a Rolex. Statistically speaking its likely at least 1 is wearing a Fake.

It is a Luminox, its a model produced just before they rolled out the Bear Grylls line. Actually pretty solid watch at the price point. Fatties and boomers hate them cause "Not rolex".

Love it how they pad out "mechanical" into an entire line of what's mechanical.

Utter scam watch.

If they have it in stock, and it's not a patek or rolex or something, jomashop should be fine. Since it's an inexpensive quartz watch you're probably good to go there. Ask if it's really in stock, ready to ship though. No warranty of course. Then again, the likelihood of something like this not working OOTB is pretty low. If junk quartz shitters direct from china for $10 work OOTB this thing should too.

Generally unless they're say a sailor, pilot or specialist typically whatever cheap shit is available. So your probably looking with all the trade embargos, cheap casios such as F91s, cheap G Shocks, anything mass dumped on the European market pre 2015 and a bunch of shitty Chinese cheapos. Russian watches too obviously, too be fair half their early injured and KIA troops were god damn drunks. I saw footage of guys falling over with vodka bottles literally meters from the front line. That entire wars a shit show on both sides.
