I'd like to gift a fragrance to my father, who now, in his early 60s, proudly makes a display of how the only fragrance he's ever worn in his adult life has been Van Cleef & Arpels pour homme, and he keeps and empty splash bottle in his bedroom for old time's sake.
As much as I love him I'm not going to drop €200+ on a bottle that he's unlikely to finish, so is there anything similar enough that you would recommend?

> Maturation: Time required for a perfume concentrate, a mixture of synthetic and natural materials, to harmonize olfactively.
> Maceration: Time required for a perfume to become olfactively stable. Macération is the outcome of various physiochemical re-actions between the perfume components and ethyl alcohol.

This is from JC Ellena's book “The Alchemy of Scent.” People use those definitions interchangeably/incorrect all the time. And every time if there is a discussion, some jerk would break in saying that in winemaking or chemistry they mean different things. Supposedly, maceration happens by itself on the side of the fragrance company, during the shipping and waiting to be purchased on a fragrance counter. Only if a fragrance was produced literally yesterday and was delivered to you today it needs to be macerated.
However, there is also a notion/belief/city legend that after you start using new bottle and let air in it - there is also the oxidation happens. A fragrance would become stronger, louder or better accentuated. Who knows why that happens though, maybe it is your nose adapts. To achieve that, just wear new bottle several times in a row applying liberally and then let it stay for a month or two.

Are you genuinely retarded? Is good scent + performance and cheap price not enough? What's wrong with the the bottle anyway, it's a literal rectangle bottle with a reflective cover and earth cracks cut outs. Is it a fist, skull or dildo design? Anyway, Armaf is as close as it gets for the realistic price range. Miss out if you'd like.

mmmh similar scent type, but I don't like TDH edt and edp much, while I love Icon. The main notes you can easily pick up are, in this order, neroli, pepper, vetiver. One of the best neroli frag, a refined, masculine neroli, not a hippy unisex neroli like 4711. Neroli and a woody-peppery backbone.
it's similar to Bvlgari Wood Neroli, another great neroli-centric frag.

I tested Dior homme original at the duty free. At first it reminded me being at the mall in the 90s. It smells like the lipstick and make up aisle at macys. I now see why many anons here have reported that it smells gay. It is inoffensive but does smell like something a tom boy lesbian or drag male would wear. I also tested Guerlain vetiver and it also smells nostalgic. Like what my grandfather would wear. He was the type of guy that would wear a dress shirt even mowing the lawn. Always wore a neck tie. Well don't you think that the associations that people make visually about seeing only women wearing skirts are at least a bit stronger than associating an oakmoss note in a perfume with a whole gender? Specially when traditionally masculine and feminine notes are all pretty much merged today? Interesting drydowns are fucking tough to create, man. Realistically, you have to resort to woods/oakmoss/ambers/sweet notes if you want to keep it natural smelling. Hay/oakmoss is the only combo I can imagine that would fit the concept of Azemour.
> I didn't like their most popular stuff at all, cuir ottoman and Ambre russe
I was also never particularly impressed with Ambre Russe. I think it got its fame because of normies thinking a vodka-champagne accord in the opening is something truly revolutionary. Other than that it's just a solid amber with the most interesting thing about it being the smoked tea accord. With Cuir Ottoman I learned to appreciate it only recently after I had gifted a bottle of it to a friend of mine for his PhD graduation. You should think about it as a posh, understated iris-leather by design. I think it's too easy in this hobby to catch oneself in a sort of ADHD mindset where you expect to be surprised or smell something completely new every time. Novel and unusual accords are important, but mastering to perfection things that have been done before is as important as that. That's what Cuir Ottoman is for me. My fav from the brand is probably Azemour Les Orangers though.

Good article. How do you feel about the fact that all of your masstige "niche" (other than indie/artisan houses, where they control the entire creative process) and designer houses (other than those with a head perfumer like Hermes or Guerlain) are just marketing companies dressing up as something else? You're buying into their nonsense about their artistic values, creative process and heritage, while it's just a 9-5 marketing job, and they literally do the following with every release
>research the market needs
>send a creative brief like "I need a modern leather for dynamic young people in urban environment" to intermediating, external fragrance companies
>those companies send your brief to perfumers working their 9-5 jobs for big-corps IFF, Givaudan or Firmenich
>some accoutnants have the final say there by looking at their Excel spreadsheets
>intermediete, external company decides for you what is the best
>"yup, ok, sounds good"
>another external chemicals mixing company creates a fragrance in a factory for you based on the formula provided
>another external bottling company pours those in bottles
>another external packaging company prints boxes for you and packages it for you
>your only job as a "niche" masstige comapny is to find perfumeries to sell "your" fragrances in and work on adverising them
Now imagine being an idiot defending PdM or Xerjoff unironically online. You're being played like tools.

I might have to try cuir ottoman again, but I dont generally like frags that are too dark. Ambre Russe I know I will never like. I hate anything boozy and while Ambre russe doesn't have a generic boozy accord, it has this almost sour wine note like a sherry that sickens me. I'm probably going to end up trying everything from him. He has a new eau de gloire cologne that's limited edition which may be another good citrus accord. Iksander is supposed to just be like eau sauvage, which im not really a fan of the basil/kitchen spice notes of those old school citrus masculines. Yuzu fou didn't seem attractive to me for some reason too, but I might still check it out. There's also acqua di scandola, which a lot of people say smells kind of like a generic ADG acquatic, which I dont think I'd really mind if it smelled like a high quality adg

From that infographic try to sample
>Chamber Fueguia 1833
it's earthy, leafy and petrichory in the way you want.
>Chamber was born from the curiosity and desire of Julian Bedel to explore and capture the most primitive scent, a multi-faceted essence that would create a natural aura of mystery. The olfactory nates are indeed very special: marble, powder, barba de viejo – the lichen of Patagonia, a plant able to indicate the level of air purity, and finally, the scent of the bottom of the lake. Here, the firmness of the marble joins the heat of the earth, evoking the backdrop of mossy lakes. Chamber was inspired by the concrete, marble, and the architecture of Louis Khan, precisely the Kimbel Collection building.

> Chamber’s first perfume was created inspired by the thought of architecture, the analogy of a perfume as a metaphysical space. Using Louis Kahn masterpiece, the Kimbell museum, reflecting their key ingredients, the perfume reproduces the smell of concrete, travertine marble, glass, grass and mostly solar light. The elixir reflects a unisex sophisticated smell, created using unique molecules that reproduce the genesis of this materials and images

I’ve tried and very limited success. Maybe buy some vintage Guerlain fragrances. The way they are built and develop with time is pure genius. It was a family owned business and the genius of the fragrances will never be reproduced again in this market. That way you’re not suppprting Jews. Jews own Guerlain now so that’s one of the reasons I purchase vintage. Furthermore, the vintage bottles have better quality oils. For example, vintage gueurlain heritage used Mysore sandalwood. As a sandalwood lover, it’s hard to beat. Otherwise, if you could buy some quality essential oils, like sandalwood and maybe try mixing them with something like vetiver. This is essentially what givenchy vetyver is.

i wear perfume to smell nice to myself. i don’t give a fuck about impressing others, nor do i give a fuck about faux-scientific blind tests which you apparently can’t seem to cite either.

>how do you feel knowing you're buying into marketing
Same as always because everything you buy, your phone, your clothes, your glasses, your cleaning products, your car/bike/bicycle, the entertainment you consume, have all been produced with the purpose of making money selling products and/or services to a group of people.
What changes between niche and designer is the marketing, because the target is necessarily different, and is in the case of niche frags designed to give the fragrance enthusiast, aka the target, a sense of exclusivity and quality by different means, but it's marketing just the same, and the fact so many people are fixated on this distinction means that marketing has largely succeeded in making you associate niche with good, high quality, exclusive, and designer with bad, low quality, normalfag-tier, despite a number of designer frags being great quality and a number of niche frags being unremarkable crowd pleaser.

You fell for marketing just the same, only different marketing.

And in fact most niche/artisan/handmade stuff is actually worse in terms of quality as highly automated mass consumer goods are more consistent.

We argued two opposite points, anon over there was saying that masstige/fake-niche houses are not real niche, and behind the niche marketing there's the same corporate process that's behind designer frags, so if you buy masstige frags you're falling for marketing, while I'm arguing that, regardless of what product and/or process is behind it, mostly everything is marketed in much the same way, albeit with slight changes depending on the target group/demographic, """real niche""" fragrances included, so you're falling for marketing whatever you buy in this day and age.

i read it as the niche/designer distinction being worthless because of the existence of both faux-niche masstige houses and extremely high quality classical “designer” houses.

if you buy small batch indie fragrances, they will be made by the perfumer personally
just saying "it's all le same" is reductive. not every perfume house out there just outsources the entirety of the production process to IFF or whatever. even some designers are significantly more in-house than brands like Xerjoff or PdM, with official house perfumers, sourcing at least some of their ingredients from their own plantations etc.

I agree, and I didn't say the opposite anywhere.
My point is not about the product or the process, it's about marketing being the same all around bar a few minute differences due to the target group/demographic, whether you're buying niche frags or canned soup or a german car, and that to say you're only falling for marketing if you buy masstige/fake-niche frags is naive, because you're also falling for marketing whenever you're buying niche frags since you're buying into the idea of exclusivity, hand-madeness, small batches and smaller margins... which are all qualities that align more with your actual and/or ideal self.
Falling for marketing doesn't mean being coerced to do something because of a fake notion, such as that Creed has been producing frags for royalty since 1760, it means you're not buying something because of the product itself, rather because of its image and what it represents, e.g. let's buy Gucci because the cool kids wear Gucci and if I wear the same stuff I'll be a cool kid too, or let's not buy frags made in the middle east, because poor pajeets and dorky high schoolers buy them, and if I too buy them I'll be just like them.

oh yeah, I agree. I think the scent itself should be all that matters. I think some people in this thread think they're better than the masstige "sheep", when they themselves also fall for brand image. like the Guerlain guy or one or two "true niche fans" ITT (not all of them, but there are some bad apples)
