best thing I ever smelled, a shame it's gone out of production. That one is aftershave, and there is a larger spray version of the bottle.
Does anyone know how the current (re) formulation compares?

PRPH is a pretty good fragrance. current CW is kinda gross IMO, and drakkar noi these days is pretty weak. fahrenheit is still pretty good.

Having said that I wouldn't say any of them really smell like the OP pic despite being period correct

some people say that this comes close to the patou, so I ordered it for comparison. I'd say that the drydown is similar, but the red is a rather smokey while the patou smells really smooth, both are equally musky.

red hasna certain perfumish/powdery smell to it, but I do not fully understand what causes it. Patou is more aromatic, but rounded, and smells slightly more alcoholic and peppery, possibly because it's an aftershave that I put into a vaporiser.

the pepper in the original reminded me of cool water, so maybe it's possible to get a similar scent be layering red, cool water and something that starts out on lavender (might need a recommendation for it)

probably it's supposed to be a clone of antaeus. Drydown is 90% antaeus, and 75% patou for me

last iteration of my experiments is finished. The patou is very smooth and carried by the warmth of the pepper. Antaeus is rather close in the aromatic quality, but has a very strong powdery/perfumy component that is not present in patou. Don't know what it is, though. This is less prominent in red, so it's a better base if you want to recreate the scent. In order to add the peppery smell I layered it with a second fragrance:
cool water, or lanvin l'homme (a cool water clone with lavender). I always applied the aromatic perfume as a base and sprayed the peppery one over it.
>red and lanvin l'homme: 85% close
lanvin adds the lavender and pepper components that are missing in red. Different opening, very close in the drydown.
>red and cool water: 75% close
just that, it goes in the general direction, but feels different
>antaeus and cool water: 55% close
cool water can subdue the strong component of antaeus a little, but I think that you're better off wearing either of them on their own
>antaeus and lanvin: failure
this creates a very disharmonic scent, cannot recommend and has nothing in common with patou

what are you interested in exactly? their scents and 80s scents in general were already discussed here. For the whole scene you probably won't find aatch easily because there is so much going on: a hot oily engine, the smell of gasoline, the leather seats in the car. Then there is the beach, sea water, which probably smells different in the evening. Probably there are some distant food stand with grilled fish or hot dogs, the smoke from that. Next you have their colognes, mixed with sweat after the car ride. Any passerby at the beach might also smell of sunscreen and a drink.

Sweet shit like vanilla, warm spices like cinnamon and powdery notes become cloying in warm weather when something more light and refreshing is preferred.
It's case by case though for what works in the heat and it's typically the cheap designer stuff heavy on the synthetics that are cloying.
