nothing wrong with appreciating bottle aesthetics. Maison Margiela must be doing something right in that department, because I think they're selling well. and their naming convention is clever, though the fragrances themselves tend to be more conventional and mass-market smelling than what they convey
I think Hermes is the best of the "I'm not like the other designers" crowd though, they're good at standing out while still being easy to like and they actually have in-house perfumers and shit

if you want a cheap freshie you can grab Encre Noire Sport, it's very nice though a bit of a weak performer. if you want a REALLY cheap freshie, Jeanne en Provence Acqua is pretty good. a nice aquatic with rose and pine

17714272

Alright, I was gonna try The Soft Lawn but switched to Saint Julep today instead since it seems pretty divisive. The main draw, the mint note, is pretty good. It smells kinda like how your mouth feels after chewing gum. Only other fragrance I've tried is You Or Someone Like You, and compared to that it's definitely a lot less natural, doesn't really have that "fresh plant" tinge to it. The sugar note definitely adds sweetness, but there's something else kinda fruity that adds texture to it so it's not just raw sugar. I think it's a lot less feminine than YOSLY, but if you want mint specifically I prefer the more natural green mint scent of the two. Still recommend though, I like it. Second best of the five I've tried so far.

Cuba Prestige is the only one I tried and it's actually good. Bought the big one to get free shipping (spending 6€ to save 4€) and I was positively surprised. Sure, it's a sweet gourmand in the style of A*Men, but it has a way stronger tobacco smell than I expected. The opening is different from the drydown and the stuff is properly powerful on me. A twodimensional fragrance with good performance for a price like that can't really be beaten.

if you must wear a jacket (and if i were you i would, but i always wear a jacket without exception) then go for open weave wools, seersucker or lightweight linens. assuming your climate is tropical enough, you will still sweat a little (you probably would even if you went nude), but you won’t be as drenched as you would be in tweed or flannel. i strongly recommend putting a handkerchief in your coat pocket, i never leave the house without one.
your other option is to go jacketless, think a half unbuttoned OCBD with a sleeveless undershirt, rolled up sleeves, light colored chinos/trousers and loafers. this is tricky to get right, but the main key is to show intent in the way you dress your outfit down. everything must have a sort of logic behind it that generally points towards the basic idea of aiming towards keeping cool.
see here for some inspiration and more ideas i personally don’t have the guts to pull off: https://dieworkwear.com/2023/06/01/excited-to-wear-this-spring-4/

I need to add €16,50 to a notino order, what do I go for?
I'm in my late 20s, I work in a big city, dress more formally than the average person, I like dry resinous, coniferous and balsamic frags like the CDG Incense series, LAVS by Filippo Sorcinelli and Aesthete by Le Galion, and I'm not looking for another cheap aquatic or neroli frag.
Please and thank you.

>>17715247
cool water is boring to you because you’ve smelled it a billion times. on a level playing field without the cultural context, it is a total masterclass in blending the lavender aspects of the fougere accords to transfigure the aromatic fougere into something else entirely. being as ubiquitous as the dot dot dot dash from beethoven’s 5th doesn’t detract from the absolute genius behind either one.

At any rate, Timbuktu is a lot smokier, a tad sweeter, much less sour, there's a mango accord in the juice, and it has significantly worse performance.
You might argue EN is a stripped down Sycamore, but if you start saying it's a stripped down Timbuktu you might as well say it's a stripped down TdH, a stripped down Grey Vetiver and a stripped down CK Eternity.

the big difference between timbuktu/EN/grey vetiver/TdH and sycomore/eternity is that the latter two aren’t based on the essential iso e super /vetiver accord that made timbuktu such a big deal. all of the fragrances in the first category that came after timbuktu are just variations on the theme that it invented. it’s the same as how every aquatic is permanently indebted to cool water’s dihydromyrcenol and calone, and much like cool water, timbuktu got it right the first time. i completely agree with the idea that TdH and GV are totally unnecessary in its presence, price notwithstanding. sycomore gets to stay on merit of achieving something on par through a very different route.
also, i don’t know what you’ve been smelling, but timbuktu’s performance was shockingly strong last time i smelled it a month or two ago. i could smell it from the smelling strip i put in my coat pocket, and it stayed there for literal days. encre noire isn’t even close to comparable in that regard.

you focus too much on surface level aesthetics and not the components that make up the accords that make up the perfumes you smell. sycomore is of course related to timbuktu and EN in that all 3 are intensely woody vetiver accords, but only timbuktu and EN rely heavily on iso e super. sycomore achieves an aesthetic similar to EN at a far higher level(and price) through an entirely different set of notes and aromachemicals, but that’s completely besides my point.
to rephrase your obvious lack of understanding of my earlier post, TdH/EN/GV are all based on the same fundamental core components that timbuktu first invented, and they ultimately surround it with a far inferior execution of top and heart notes. i see no reason to own either of the 3 aforementioned unless one is too vapid to see past shallow aesthetics.

Does anyone else have an unhealthy obsession with TdH? legit is so perfect, the iso e super + dirty orange is a timeless combination. It’s also very masculine, yet balanced which is super rare with modern fragrances, many of them are way too unisex for me and come off like an air freshener. They absolutely are. They provide a good start, with a good mix of designers you can find at stores, semi-niche fragrances you can find in dedicated shops, and faux-niche as well as real niche stuff that might be hard to come by. They contain fragrances many people on these threads have sampled and since added to their collections. They do no harm.
Of course, there are better books out there, but a simple chart or two with easily digestible information is a great addition to these threads. And no, Reddit does not have information or guides anywhere near this useful. They wish they had but they are ADHD riddled autists addicted to the infinite scroll instead of being properly hyperfocused autists. When they press F5, they get sent back to the top of the feed, so they never do.

encre noire isn’t bad because it’s a vetiver, encre noire is bad because it says nothing meaningful about fragrance. it took the base notes of an existing fragrance (timbuktu), stripped everything away, added some fleeting top notes, and sold it for pennies because iso e super is also dirt cheap. the fact that people actually thought this was somehow contestable is testament to how little this thread actually cares about fragrance beyond the shallowest of aesthetic descriptors.

Kek. You guys sound based.
I started with this hobbie two years ago and the first thing I bought was Eau des Baux, just after that Le Labo and Diptyque discovery sets and most of the frags ended up being a disappiontment.
Today I own and use just three cheap bottles: Polo OG (cold days/outdoors), The Dreamer (most of the days) and Luna Rossa (hot weather) and almost 300 vials and decants to wear/smell at home.
Could any of you please suggest me some fragrances to test?
