Anyone else who posts after me is getting my sloppy seconds, my leftovers.

Just remember that the first reply is the most special reply and you'll never experience this thread the way I did and this thread will never feel the way it felt about me about you.

It's one of the older HOMOS designs, if not the oldest.
Back in the 2000s there was a revival of the Bauhaus aesthetic for some reasons, and HOMOS became famous and successful thanks to the Onion. They're keeping it alive because some people still like this aesthetic I guess?
But yeah, if you wanted to be cool in 2000-2005, you either bought a HOMOS Onion or a Junghans Max Bill.

It is easier to market a new product by an existing well-known name than it is to try and rebuild a name that everyone forgot. At that point, you're basically just starting from scratch.

There are more people who will accept the idea of Montblanc as a luxury goods manufacturer, instead of just a pen manufacturer, than there are sticky purists who will whine about some dead name from before the quartz crisis.

zenith has a top-notch movement. truly a marvel of engineering. you could say that they are flying under the radar and dont get nearly as much attention as they should. it mainly has to do with the polarizing look of their watches. dial to be more precise. if you like them, they are a very good choice. only downside is that they probably wont hold their value as good as decent option daytona, but who knows. a huge number of absolute dogs that were worth next to nothing just 5 years ago became collectable. if you plan on keeping it for yourself it shouldnt bother you

Nothing gets rights to look like Daytona cope. Zenith sold the El Primero to a whole bunch of companies.

By your logic, you could say JLC is allowed to be a Patek cope because Patek has used JLC movements in the past.

has it right.
The thing is Daniels' escapement is actually great both in theory and practice, IF you make it the way he did and the way his sole apprentice and inheritor of his legacy, Roger Smith, makes them.
He took the idea first to Patek who was very interested; they couldn't get it to work in mass production. Hayek, Swatch Group boss, took interest and got ETA's movement engineers to work on it closely in conjunction with both Daniels and Smith for YEARS with the intent of giving it to Omega to use as an edge against Rolex.
Result: gimmick. The benefit of the escapement was negated, rendered pointless. Arguably worse now compared with a regular Swiss Lever. How then did Daniels/Smith get the thing to work? Their movements are made out of gold which is more elastic compared with steel. Gold allows for the impact action of the co-axial, which generates less friction, leading to less frequent servicing. Smith has mentioned when queried that to date no co-axial movement has needed the typical maintenance servicing that a movement needs. They're all still going strong years later. It works and it's brilliant.

Mass produce it and you have problems. The coaxial is meant to be lubricant-less. Omega aka ETA found that the movements they made would tear themselves apart because of the impact over time.
Solution: tiny amount of lubricant added to the escapement to act as a cushion for the impact.

What's the problem? Swiss lever like Rolex and basically everyone else:
>use it for years, maybe decades
>watch keeps going
>can still use it even if lube has all evaporated
>bad for movement, but it keeps going regardless
Though you shouldn't neglect it, you have a lot of leeway. Buy, wear and forget for large chunks of your life.

ETA's cuxial:
>NEEDS maintenance within 8 years
>if not the lube-cushion is gone and shit starts fucking itself to death
>needs "special training" and a special microscope in order to apply
Time bomb.

It always amuses me when retards in these threads unironically believe that [insert any brand] stands a chance against Rolex. Rolex literally CREATED the market for luxury steel sports watches that [insert any brand] is currently positioned on.

Pic related EXISTS solely because Rolex defined the codes for it. This watch (or any Omega, IWC or whatever) is nothing more than a homage to 1950s Rolex. Even Vacheron, Cartier and fucking Breguet have to make steel sports watches now. I don't think people realize how insane that is lmao

Ever wonder why AP and PP made steel sports watches as a reaction to the quartz crisis? Because Rolex was the only brand making mechanical watches that sold.

Not only that, but Rolex DOMINATES the whole auction world. Every week there are vintage Rolex that sell for hundreds of thousands at Phillips and Sotheby's.

Everyone wants a piece of Rolex' success. Brands, collectors, investors, customers...

No they didn't.
Rolex invented the men's wristatch, i give them that. However it was AP that invented the frak watch for a lot of money market.

Royal oak was the first steel watch that costed an unreasonable amount of money designed to be a conspicuous piece of male jewelry with a garish design so that the people could tell from a distance that you're wearing the expensive watch.

Rolex prices went through the roof quite recently.

You're not wrong.

I think part of the reason so few Rolexes actually get posted here is that when an anon buys one, he realizes that he can stop. He doesn't have to pretend that a watch "collection" is a substitute for a personality. He doesn't need to "tick all the boxes". None of that shit.

Of course, there's plenty to be said for sticking around for schizo posting. The watches posted here are almost universally dogshit, but the seething is great.
